Novel telecommunication systems build on a cloudified architecture running softwarized network services as disaggregated virtual network functions (VNFs) on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware to improve costs and flexibility. Given the stringent processing deadlines of modern applications, these systems are critically dependent on a closed-loop control algorithm to orchestrate the execution of the disaggregated components. At the moment, however, the formal model for implementing such real-time control loops is mostly missing. In this paper, we introduce a new real-time VNF execution environment that runs entirely on COTS hardware. First, we define a comprehensive formal model that enables us to reason about packet processing delays across disaggregated VNF processing chains analytically. Then we integrate the model into a gradient-optimization control algorithm to provide optimal scheduling for real-time infocommunication services in a programmable way. We present experimental evidence that our model gives a proper delay estimation on a real software switch. We evaluate our control algorithm on multiple representative use cases using a software switch simulator. Our results show that our algorithm can optimize the disaggregated network for real-time processing requirements at the millisecond granularity in just a few control periods.

Compact AFSIW Antenna With Integrated Digitally controlled Impedance Tuner for Smart Surfaces

For unobtrusive smart-surface integration, an air-filled substrate-integrated waveguide (AFSIW) antenna for the [5.15-5.85]GHz band is co-designed with a tunable matching network and a cavity-integrated biasing circuit. It features a reconfigurable matching network to mitigate impedance mismatch due to objects in its reactive near field. A digitally controlled biasing circuit with switched-mode power supply is seamlessly integrated inside the air-filled antenna cavity to accurately control the matching network through a serial interface. The proposed impedance-tunable antenna covers an impedance bandwidth from 4.64 GHz to 6.09 GHz with a peak gain of 4.51 dBi at its center frequency. Measurements show that the cavity-integrated circuitry has negligible influence on the antenna performance, yielding novel integration potential. The impedance-tunable antenna is tested in a smart surface desktop integration scenario where it corrects detuning by objects placed on top, improving the wireless link for IEEE 802.11ac bands.

This study proposes a novel integrated strategy aimed at enhancing both energy efficiency and safety levels in maritime operations by leveraging advanced ship trajectory optimization and motion control technologies. The paper quantitatively analyzes CO2 emissions and fuel consumption using the International Maritime Organization's Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI). Additionally, it employs Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms to adjust and optimize ship routes, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption. Moreover, the research delves into precise ship motion control under constraints and uncertainties within a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) nonlinear system environment. It achieves this by utilizing asymmetric barrier Lyapunov functions (ABLF) and adaptive neural networks (NN), which together ensure robust and reliable control performance. By integrating these advanced methodologies, the study provides comprehensive solutions that are applicable for sustainable and safe maritime operations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of using PSO to design vessel trajectory to reduce vessel fuel consumption and the effectiveness of ABLF and adaptive NN for ship safe motion control.

Modern Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) are often designed as networked, software-based controller implementations which have been found to be vulnerable to network-level and physical-level attacks. A number of research works have proposed CPS-specific attack detection schemes as well as techniques for attack-resilient controller design. However, such schemes also incur platform-level overheads. In this regard, some recent works have leveraged the use of skips in control execution to enhance the resilience of a CPS against false data injection (FDI) attacks. However, skipping the control executions may degrade the performance of the controller. In this paper, we provide an analytical discussion on when and how skipping a control execution can improve the system's resilience against FDI attacks while maintaining the control performance requirement. Our proposed method i) synthesizes a library of such optimal control execution patterns offline, and ii) executes one of them in run-time judging the intent of the attacker. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work has provided any quantitative analysis about the trade-off between attack resilience and control performance for such aperiodic control execution. Finally, we evaluate the proposed method on several safety-critical CPS benchmarks.

With the progress of science and technology nowadays and the enhancements in control system optimization field, system fault diagnosis has become a hot topic in the industry, and many models of fault diagnosis using various artificial intelligence algorithms have emerged. However, with the increasing complexity of fault, the accuracy of fault diagnosis from a single data source gradually declines. Based on this, this paper proposal an intelligent diagnosis model innovationally basing on multi-sensor intelligent fusion algorithm, which uses BP neural network, a typical artificial intelligence algorithm, to generate evidence from multi-sensor data, on this basis, D-S evidence theory is used for data fusion to improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis and the performance of fault diagnosis algorithm in multi-type control systems.

The output power of photovoltaic (PV) arrays is directly proportional to the solar irradiance level. Therefore, the results of a PV panel highly relies on the prevailing weather circumstances. This cause, the outcome of a PV system can fluctuate rapidly, making it difficult to maintain a stable power supply. This paper analyzed the performance of PV panel integrated with the grid through interlinking converters at different attributes is the novelty in this article. The primary objective of the research included in this thesis is to contribute to the increased implementation of photovoltaic (PV) systems into electric networks. This objective can be met by precisely assessing the performance of PV systems without underestimating the impacts of these systems on the electric network. Overestimating or underestimating the performance of PV systems can lead to issues with electric network planning and operation. Using various control techniques, such as MPPT, voltage and current control, and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), helps to increase the system's performance and ensure a stable and efficient power supply. These control techniques are implemented in MATLAB/Simulink using control blocks and algorithms, which are connected to the simulation model of the network. Furthermore, the simulation measures performed using a 100 kW solar system connected to a power grid show better performance with various power electronics components and also verify the performance of the boost converter and the LCL filter with a reduction in harmonics in the output of the proposed network. A significant value of the LCL filter reduces Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) percentage, 0.06% for the grid. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

There has been a growing interest to adopt low-power wide-area network technology, specially LoRa, for industrial control applications. Its machine-to-machine communication capabilities can enable management of large-area applications (e.g., oil fields over hundreds of km(2)) or process plants that are often positioned far from the central operations center, at inconvenient or hazardous locations in difficult terrain or offshore. While recent works have studied real-time communication over LoRa, they have not considered optimizing control performance. To optimize control performance, industrial automation needs a co-design of real-time scheduling and control. Such a co-design, in general, is highly challenging due to complex dependencies between control performance, plant dynamics, and real-time communication. Existing co-design approaches for other wireless domains are not applicable to LoRa network. LoRa nodes are extremely power-constrained hindering frequent communication and scale. In this paper, we propose a highly energy-efficient and scalable framework for real-time scheduling and control co-design for a LoRa network. By taking into account LoRa characteristics, the co-design approach entails state-aware communication and control to dynamically update the sampling rates while meeting real-time constraints. To minimize communication and synchronization overhead, the co-design is decomposed through a partitioned scheduling. We consider co-design in each partition of the control loops by developing a new schedulability condition. The proposed scheduling-control co-design solution dynamically determines the sampling rates of the sensors to optimize control performance. Simulations based on NS-3 and a custom control script show that our co-design approach minimizes control cost at least by 80% as compared to the baselines.

To meet the special requirements of high dynamic and performance for turntable servo systems, an internal model control (IMC) method based on reversible residual neural network model is proposed in this paper. In order to improve the accuracy and modeling efficiency of the forward and inverse models in the internal model controller and ensure the correlation between these two models, a reversible residual neural network model based on the forward and inverse dynamic characteristics of turntable servo systems is proposed. Through the special design of the network structure, the forward and inverse models can be obtained by one-way training. Then, the forward and inverse models are applied to the traditional IMC algorithm framework, the IMC method based on the reversible network model is obtained, and the stability of the control system is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed IMC method has better nonlinear compensation ability, tracking effect, and dynamic performance than the traditional IMC method. In addition, the design process of the proposed internal model controller is simpler and more practical. The method described in this paper has important value and significance for the intelligent development of traditional servo control. © 2024 IEEE.

Data Processing Units (DPUs) are becoming increasingly popular, especially for use in conjunction with WarehouseScale Computers (WSCs) due to their ability to handle networking functions and data-centric workloads. Cost-performance, energy efficiency, network I/O, and batch processing workloads are important design factors for WSCs. Recent developments in AI and the never-ending increase in demand for data processing, cloud computing, and HPC set the optimisation of all those design factors as a high priority. DPUs can be utilised to achieve significant improvements in all those areas. This includes in-line network processing and upcoming enhanced security paradigms such as post-quantum cryptography (PQC) for quantum resilient communications or software-defined perimeters (SDP) for confidential computing implementations. Being P4-enabled and dRMT-based, DPUs allow for the reconfigurability of the network traffic without the need to change the hardware. However, the network performance on such devices is only sometimes deterministic since the actual traffic and the rules, both of which have to do with packet processing, are not known during compile time. In this paper, we envision how the network performance on DPUs can be accelerated. We describe the challenges that negatively impact the bandwidth and latency: the complex steering pipeline and the massive runtime needed to optimise. These challenges arise from the lack of information during compile time that is only known during runtime. Thus, we envision optimising during runtime by leveraging DPUs' reconfigurability on the network I/O. For this, we discuss the significant factors that must be considered to accelerate the network performance on such devices and we propose a solution for them.

The progressive replacement of thermal power plants by converter-interfaced generation, such as wind and solar power plants, reduces the synchronous component available in the system. Additionally, as converter-interfaced renewable energy sources do not directly provide inertia to the power grid, electric power systems are facing a notorious inertia reduction. When facing disturbances affecting the balance between the generation and demand, reduced inertia systems exhibit higher and faster frequency deviations and dynamics. This can result in the disconnection of generation units as well as load shedding, provoking cascading effects that can compel severe power outages. This work examines the impacts of the progressive integration of converter-interfaced renewable energy sources in the frequency stability, considering critical disturbances involving short-circuits in different locations. To simulate the dynamic behaviour of a network containing high shares of renewable energy generation, the IEEE 39-bus system is used while resorting to the PSS/E simulation package. After obtaining a scenario with reduced synchronous generation, the network's stability is assessed in face of key frequency indicators (frequency nadir and Rate of Change of Frequency, RoCoF). Regarding the critical disturbances applied in a low inertia scenario, different control solutions for the mitigation of frequency stability problems are tested and their performance is assessed comparatively. This involves the investigation of the performance of the active power-frequency control in the renewable energy sources, of synchronous condensers, or fast active power-frequency regulation services from stationary energy storage. Moreover, the influence of the location and apparent power of synchronous condensers (SCs) and Battery Energy Storage systems (BESS) on the frequency indicators is evaluated.
