Cross-Layer design has been the focus of several recent research efforts. Due to the highly variable nature of the links used in wireless communication systems and the resource-poor nature of the wireless mobile devices, there have been multiple research efforts to improve the performance of the protocol stack by allowing cross-layer interaction in wireless systems. Cross-layer interaction means allowing communication of a layer with any other possibly non-adjacent layer in the protocol stack. Several issues related to the cross-layer design paradigm need to be addressed before it can achieve its promises. One of these issues is to have a well defined framework that manages the interaction between the different layers of the protocol stack, such that the modularity of the stack is preserved while still achieving the flexibility and adaptability which cross-layer design promises. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a cross-layer coordination framework for nextgeneration wireless systems. The proposed framework enables the interaction between non-adjacent layers in a systematic organized way while preserving the modularity of each layer. The proposed framework addresses some of the concerns stated in recent research about cross-layer design. We believe that the existence of such a framework will ease the development of cross-layer design schemes. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Advances in next-generation SONET/SDH along with GMPLS control have enabled many new service provisioning capabilities. A key paradigm is the new Layer 1 virtual private network (L1 VPN) framework, which allows clients to directly provision their own services without deploying expensive infrastructures. This paper proposes a novel L1 VPN resource management scheme for virtual concatenation-enabled nextgeneration SONET/SDH networks. The scheme is fully compatible with both centralized and distributed control frameworks and allows for dynamic resource sharing. Detailed performance analysis results are also presented.

This paper proposes a new movement detection mechanism using a Differential Received Signal Strength Indicator (DRSSI) in a mobile Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. MPLS can support a mobile service and will be the fundamental technology in nextgeneration Network (NGN). A Base Station (BS) can detect the movement of Mobile Node (MN) by measuring its DRSSI In our algorithm, a BS can release the bandwidth of MN in handoff when the MN goes to another cell. According to the numerical analysis, our movement detection algorithm using DRSSI can increase the performance of mobile MPLS network by reducing handoff blocking probability.

In this paper, we present an overall architecture to integrate SIP-based session management with scalable QoS features and AAA functionality. The QoS features include a bandwidth reservation in the access network based on the next Steps in Signaling (NSIS) architecture. Furthermore, we employ the DiffServ compliant Priority Promotion Scheme (PPS) which is a packet probing scheme to verify end-to-end premium bandwidth availability. To avoid misuse of the QoS features AAA functionality is added that binds the QoS usage with the specific SIP sessions. The AAA functionality is achieved by applying a combination of the widespread RADIUS protocol with the Common Open Policy Service (COPS). As a proof of concept our architecture has been implemented and performance tested. The strength of our approach is that it keeps away complexity from the carrier networks while providing QoS with access control in a scalable fashion.

Advance reservation is a mechanism to guarantee the availability of resources when they are needed. In the context of LambdaGrid, this mechanism is used to provide data-intensive applications with the needed deterministic network Quality of Service to transport data between grid instruments, high-performance storage systems, compute clusters and visualization systems. Flexible scheduling affords users greater convenience while also improving resource utilization and acceptance rate. In this paper we propose a Flexible Advance Reservation Model (FARM) and describe how to implement this model in the metascheduling problem. Then we extend this. methodology to the cross-domain lightpath reservation problem by incorporating Routing and Wavelength Assignment algorithms. next, we present the architecture, implementation and APIs of a coordinated Interdomain and Intradomain optical control plane called AR-PIN/PDC, which is capable of flexible advance reservations. Our simulation results show that by relaxing the reservation time constraint, the acceptance rate and resource utilization can be improved dramatically. Through simulations, we also analyze the impact of advance reservations on immediate reservations and conclude that both AR and IR requests need admission control algorithms in order to let both types of reservations coexist and use resource properly.

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in distributed coordination function (DCF) mode is not scalable as the number of contending users increases. In this paper, we propose two new contention resolution schemes to reduce the number of collisions due to a large number of contending users. The first scheme, hybrid DCF (H-DCF), splits the monolithic contention resolution into two phases to enhance scalability. The other scheme, enhanced hybrid DCF (EH-DCF), provides fairness with the current IEEE 802.11 MAC and yet improves the efficiency of contention resolution. The major contribution of our work is to provide inter-operability with the IEEE 802.11 DCF as well as an efficient channel access, unlike the previous works. We conduct comprehensive simulation experiments by using an ns-2 simulator to demonstrate the advantages of these two schemes. The results show that they improve network performance by up to 10 similar to 30%, compared to the original IEEE 802.11 DCF Therefore, H-DCF and EH-DCF can be good candidates for MAC protocols for hotspots where numerous users access wireless LANs intensively.

We present a time-domain simulation framework for nextgeneration shipboard integrated power system networks based on Intelligent Power Routers (IPR's). Our first experimental results evidence that by distributing the network intelligence and control functions across multiple IPR's, the survivability, security, reliability and re-configurability of the ship power system can be significantly improved. Each IPR has embedded intelligence, allowing it to switch power tines, shed loads, and receive/broadcast local state variable information to and from other neighboring IPR's. These information exchanges allow the routers to coordinate among themselves to reconfigure the network and supply energy to critical subsystems in the ship such as weapons, communications and navigation. Our initial simulations evidence that the power network can be reconfigured in a decentralized manner within practical reconfiguration times.
