The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been considered as an enabling technology in the next generation wireless communications. In this paper, we propose a novel uplink sensing scheme based on orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation and deep learning (DL) to realize the ISAC framework in vehicular networks. Specifically, the initial estimates of motion-related parameters (e.g., angles and locations) are generated by the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and threshold-based algorithms with the assistance of OTFS modulation. Subsequently, we develop a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based method to implicitly learn the features of historical channels and predict the trajectories of the vehicles. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve satisfactory sensing performance with low signal overhead.

The critical infrastructure and industrial control systems (ICS) typically function in isolation and make use of specialized hardware, software, protocols that are often sourced from heterogeneous vendors. Rise of Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) means that these isolated old networks are gradually being connected with Internet and other telecommunication networks. This leads to various problems and challenges, such as incompatibility with outside networks, cyber security challenges, limited automation, lack of features or mechanisms demanded by modern devices and sensors. On the other hand an ICS has strict operational requirements from the network, such as reliability, temporal consistency, ruggedness etc. Emerging technology like network function virtualization (NFV), and software defined network (SDN) have excellent opportunity to achieve network resiliency in ICS, however their application has been under-explored. Therefore, we present a novel architecture for industrial control networks (ICN) that take advantage of NFV and SDN to build robust, cost effective, secure, and scalable ICNs. We leverage the novel P4 paradigm to virtualize the network infrastructure and evaluate its effectiveness.

This extended abstract outlines our research on quantum and emerging computing systems for next-generation wireless networks. The research aims to leverage quantum and quantum-inspired computation to expedite baseband processing at base stations. We introduce our system design directions and prototype systems that are implemented on analog quantum processors. The prototypes are designed for quantum-accelerated near-optimal multi-user detection processing in MIMO systems that could drastically increase wireless performance for tomorrow's nextG cellular networking standards, as well as in nextG wireless local area networks (LAN).

Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies have driven mobile communication networks to evolve toward a Service-Based Architecture (SBA) with great flexibility to meet the highly-dynamic requirements of vertical applications. The SBA has been applied into 5th generation (5G) core network and is evolving toward service-based end-to-end networks including virtualized Radio Access networks (vRANs). This paper proposes a converged SBA (cSBA) to decouple access, control, and data planes. Specifically, the access plane with Distributed Units (DUs) functionalities is responsible for accessing User Equipments (UEs);the control plane consists of newly-defined converged services by integrating functionalities of Central Unit control Planes (CU-CPs) and 5G core network for signaling processing;the data plane comprises Central Unit User Planes (CP-UPs) and User Plane Functions (UPFs), which are responsible for service data transmission. Optional converged services definition, service-based interface implementation, and cognitive service framework are proposed to enable an efficient cSBA. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the cSBA against the monolithic architecture.

A proposed microstrip patch antenna, powered through microstrip feeding and tailored for Ka-band applications (30-40 GHz), signifies a notable advancement in antenna technology. This work is particularly pertinent to next-generation network applications, with a specific focus on the frequency of 33 GHz. The antenna is fabricated using the Rogers RT/Duroid 5880™ substrate, renowned for its distinct attributes. Notably, it boasts a remarkably low dielectric loss tangent of 0.0009, coupled with a relative permittivity of 2.2 and a thickness measuring 1mm. These characteristics render it well-suited for antennas necessitating minimal signal attenuation, effective concentration of electromagnetic waves, and meticulous dimensional management. Simulation and thorough analysis of the antenna's performance have been conducted using Ansoft HFSS. This comprehensive assessment of radiation performance parameters is crucial to ensure that the microstrip patch antenna functions effectively within the specified Ka band frequencies, thus aligning with the requirements of next-generation network applications. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper explores the evolution of Radio Access Network (RAN) architectures and their integration into Non-Terrestrial networks (NTN) to address escalating mobile traffic demands. Focusing on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites as key components of NTN, we examine the feasibility of RAN function splits (FSs) in terms of fronthaul (FH) latency, elevation angle, and bandwidth (BW) across LEO satellites and ground stations (GS), alongside evaluating performance of Conditional Handover (CHO) procedures under diverse scenarios. By assessing performance metrics such as handover duration, disconnection time, and control traffic volume, we provide insights on several aspects such as stringent constraints for Low Layer Splits (LLSs), leading to longer delays during mobility procedures and increased control traffic across the feeder link in comparison with the case when gNodeB is onboard satellite. Despite challenges, LLSs demonstrate minimal onboard satellite computational requirements, promising reduced power consumption and payload weight. These findings underscore the architectural possibilities and challenges within the telecommunications industry, paving the way for future advancements in NTN RAN design and operation.

In this paper, we present a framework for experimentation in next-generation Initial Access (IA) procedures for Millimeter Wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) communications called SofTwAre-defined Mmwave INitial Access (STAMINA). The IA procedure is one of the essential components for communication systems in high frequencies, enabling directional transmitters and receivers to acquire each other's relative orientation before data transmission. While effective in establishing communication, the existing IA procedure standardized by 3GPP consumes a significant amount of radio resources. Many research efforts have proposed enhancements over the current-generation IA procedure, e.g., leveraging non-uniform beam sweep sequences or adaptive codebooks. However, no existing experimental mmWave platforms support modifications in their standard-compliant IA procedures, preventing their utilization for conducting experimental research on next-generation IA procedures. Our software-defined mmWave framework addresses this gap by combining the flexibility of Software-defined Radios (SDRs) with the directionality of mmWave front-ends to perform customizable IA procedures. We demonstrate STAMINA's ability to control mmWave frontends correctly, its increased performance over traditional static experiments, and its flexibility to customize the IA parameters to achieve different objectives. Our results show that STAMINA provides experimenters with a flexible platform for performing experiments on next-generation IA procedures.

The development of next-generation networks is revolutionizing network operators' management and orchestration practices worldwide. The critical services supported by these networks require increasingly stringent performance requirements, especially when considering the aspect of network reliability. This increase in reliability, coupled with the mass generation and consumption of information stemming from the increasing complexity of the network and the integration of artificial intelligence agents, affects transport networks, which will be required to allow the feasibility of such services to materialize. To this end, traditional recovery schemes are inadequate to ensure the resilience requirements of next-generation critical services given the increasingly dynamic nature of the network. The work presented in this paper proposes a probabilistic and fault-tolerant robust traffic grooming model for OTN-over-DWDM networks. The model's parameterization gives network operators the ability to control the level of protection and reliability required to meet their quality of service and service level agreement guarantees. The results demonstrate that the robust solution can ensure fault tolerance even in the face of demand uncertainty without service disruptions and the need for reactive network maintenance.

6G virtualized beamforming: a novel framework for optimizing massive MIMO in 6G networks

The advent of 6G networks promises unprecedented connectivity, with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology playing a critical role in achieving high throughput, low latency, and enhanced spectral efficiency. However, optimizing massive MIMO for 6G present's challenges related to beamforming efficiency, power consumption, and dynamic network environments. This paper introduces a novel framework for 6G Virtualized Beamforming that leverages virtualization techniques to enhance beam management in massive MIMO systems. Our framework employs a combination of advanced machine learning algorithms and software-defined networking to dynamically allocate beamforming resources, improving adaptability in high-density environments and optimizing signal-to-noise ratios. By virtualizing beamforming control, the proposed framework reduces the overhead of hardware dependencies and facilitates seamless integration with existing 6G infrastructure. Furthermore, the system incorporates predictive analytics for proactive beam steering and user allocation, enhancing network performance while minimizing power consumption. Simulation results show a 22% reduction in power consumption and a 19% increase in spectral efficiency compared to traditional beamforming approaches. This study provides a foundation for scalable, virtualized MIMO systems that can meet the demands of next-generation wireless communications. Our research opens avenues for further exploration into the interplay between virtualization and beamforming in 6G, with implications for the future design of more flexible, cost-effective network architectures.

5G promises faster speeds and ubiquitous coverage, which requires a robust transport network. A Fiber to the Home (FTTH) access network based on 10 Gbps passive optical network (10G-PON) technology can be an attractive and cost-effective way to support this transport. The design of a cheap and tunable transmitter in the central office (CO) is essential for 10G-PON FTTH. This manuscript has been prepared with the aforementioned goal in mind. To evaluate the performance of the 10G-PON FTTH, a design simulation model based on the transmitter is executed using OptiSystem simulation. The simulation results show that the best performance is demonstrated when phase shift equals 135°. The demodulated signal with a 10 Gbps downlink data stream is dropped after a 40 km transmission distance. This transmitter is economical and requires no additional components, such as a filter, which makes it an attractive candidate for next-generation G-PON FTTH Access networks. © 2024 IEEE.
