Over the past two decades, autonomous vehicles for consumers have emerged as an imperative area of research. For driver assistance systems, the lane detection technique forms a key element to augment safe driving and afford warning in case of hazard. In this article, the difficulty of detecting lane amidst shadows and strong lighting condition is addressed which is significant for driving automation on mountainous roads. The proposed approach is tailored to mitigate the shadow effects cast on road scenes by using a hybrid saturation feature which in turn would meet the need for robust lane identification. Computer vision techniques are used to extract the existence of visual cues and label the lanes in the camera frames. Experimental analysis is carried out on real road hilly images using the proposed approach. © 2019 IEEE.

Landmark localization is a very important step for many face-related computer vision applications. Compare to the holistic approaches (e.g. AAMs), constrained local models (CLMs) shows good performance for landmark localization in non-rigid facial images. But these methods are always limited by the initialization. This paper proposed an eye center guided constrained local model where the initialization is performed by mean face shape taking eyes as references. First, we have adopted a hybrid eye detector method to find both the eye centers and then mean face shape is placed on the basis of orientation and distance of two eye centers. Moreover, we have analyzed our models with some descriptors to find the best descriptor to represent our model. The proposed CLM approach has been tested on AR and Multi-PIE databases with 130 and 68 landmarks respectively. The experimental results suggest that our proposed method has achieved improved performance as compared to existing methods. © 2019 IEEE.

A modern car contains about 30 magnetic sensors on average. Their performances depend on the readout circuit imperfections, the magnetic environment, and mechanical assembly tolerances. For angle sensors, this yields a complex physics with magnet tilt and off-axis rotation. Traditionally these effects are studied separately in finite-element-method (FEM) simulators, separated from traditional system and circuit design simulation tools. This creates a simulation gap. A new modeling method for physical modeling of magnetic position sensors is presented. The method is based on spherical harmonic decomposition, and is implemented in Matlab. In this representation, any rigid-body 3-D motion of the magnet and sensor is modeled by matrix operations. Critical physical effects for the sensor accuracy can then be explored directly in system simulation tools such as Matlab, Simulink, Python or even in an integrated circuit simulator. The method maintains FEM accuracy. It represents a paradigm shift in magnetic position sensor design, and brings FEM accuracy to a much wider range of users.

This paper presents a tool called VHDLASYN (VHDL Asynchronous SYNthesis) focused on synthesis of asynchronous digital systems. The tool employs the bundle-data decomposition design style (synchronous data-path with asynchronous controller) and uses the extended burst-mode (XBM) specification to describe the controller. The interaction between the controller and data-path occurs in the two-phase handshake protocol, allowing for better performance. The tool starts from a behavioral VHDL description and generates a structural VHDL description that is robust to malfunction related to hazard, therefore can be implemented in FPGAs (Field Programmable Gated Array). Different from other tools of the literature, the VHDLASYN tool performs at all stages of behavioral and logic synthesis, at high level of optimization. The VHDLSYN tool synthesized a set of known benchmarks and implemented in the FPGA platform showing a high robustness to the mapping, i.e., free-hazard design.

Synchronous Finite State Machines (SFSM) are widely used in the control unit design of complex digital systems. These systems are implemented in CMOS DSM (Deep-Sub-Micron) technology and can present serious problems related to the global clock. In this context, the asynchronous paradigm shows interesting features that fit as an alternative for the design, despite of the difficulties of the application of asynchronous logic. This paper proposes a new state assignment method for Asynchronous FSMs, which is described by the popular specification known as Extended Burst-Mode (XBM). The state assignment method uses the two-hot code to encode the XBM_AFSMs. Also, the paper proposes a "necessary and sufficient" condition for XBM_AFSMs encoded in two-hot to be synthesized with conventional tools, in the steps of logic minimization and technology mapping. Doing a comparison for a set of fifteen benchmarks with AFSMs of local clock that use the conventional logical minimization, the proposed method obtained an average reduction of products of 23% and literals of 51%.

The simulation of the passage of particles through matter using Monte Carlo methods is broadly used in the development of particle detectors for high energy physics experiments. To develop the readout electronics for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN, and to assist the design of the on-detector ASICs, a simulation framework was build capable to link the physics Monte Carlo simulations platforms with an industry standard EDA simulation tools. This contribution focuses on the implementation of the simulation framework based on the System Verilog language and the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM). The simulation results that guided the development of the ASICs and the choice of the final architecture are presented.

This paper presents a process for full-3D circuit and RF passive component fabrication based on two main steps: additive manufacturing of the plastic or ceramic substrate, through a stereolitographic 3D printer, and a copper electroless plating metallization process. The metallization results are discussed in terms of resistivity, comparing them to the State-of-the-Art on 3D printed electronics. The capabilities and accuracy of the process have been demonstrated and discussed through the fabrication of conical inductors.

The increasing computing capacity of multicore components like processors and graphics processing units (GPUs) offer new opportunities for embedded and high-performance computing (HPC) domains. The progressively growing computing capacity of multicore-based systems enables to efficiently perform complex application workloads at a lower power consumption compared to traditional single core solutions. Such efficiency and the ever-increasing complexity of application workloads encourage industry to integrate more and more computing components into the same system. The number of computing components employed in large-scale HPC systems already exceeds a million cores, while 1000-cores on-chip platforms are available in the embedded community. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents electromagnetic simulations of a wireless power transfer system suitable for a monitoring system for detection of solder fatigue in power semiconductor modules. Power is provided wirelessly from a printed spiral coil on a printed circuit board to a silicon chip with an on-chip coil. We use and adapt a known gradient-ascent-based optimization algorithm to obtain suitable coil geometries. For a frequency of 433 MHz, the simulations show an efficiency of -33.9 dB which we conclude is sufficient for the proposed monitoring system. © 2018 IEEE.

In this study, lead-free, piezoelectric devices were fabricated by vacuum radiofrequency (RF) sputtering of Ga-doped, ZnO (GZO) nanocoatings at different deposition modes on silicon substrates. Several deposition rates were varied (2 to 16 nm/min) by tuning the sputtering voltage and pressure, in order to control the microstructure and surface morphology of the films. The dependences of the piezoelectric properties of GZO thin films on the different deposition conditions were investigated. Significant dependency of the films' microstructure and surface roughness was observed to the deposition modes used for fabrication. The results showed that after optimization, the surface roughness of the films grown using sputtering voltage 1.1 kV and Ar=2.5.10-2 Torr, is 6 nm. Films with such microstructures are characterized with crystallites orientation (002) and exhibit the highest piezoelectric coefficient of 96.3 pC/m, which is superior compared to other known, lead-free, piezoelectric materials. A simple, membrane-based, vibration sensor was fabricated at the optimal set of conditions to demonstrate the functionality of the coating in a real microelectromechanical (MEMS) device. The working range of the device is between 2 and 800 g and the piezoelectric voltage generated after minimum deformation of 5.4 nm (2g), was 9.66 mV. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.
