We fabricate hybrid quantum dot (QD) solar cells by combining type-I InAs/GaAs QDs and type-ii GaSb/ aAs QDs, where the benefits of strong light absorption of type-I QDs and long carrier lifetime of type-ii QDs are combined in a single device by using molecular beam epitaxy. We confirm the processes of photon absorption and emission by type-I QDs and reabsorption by type-ii QDs by investigating their photoluminescence properties. The photovoltaic effects in such hybrid QD solar cells are also demonstrated. Our hybrid QD nanostructures would find potential applications in high efficiency QD-based solar cells operating under concentrated sunlight.

The exciton oscillator strength (OS) in type-ii quantum dot (QD) nanowires is calculated by using a fast and efficient method. We propose a new structure in Double-Well QD (DWQD) nanowire that considerably increases OS of type-ii QDs which is a key parameter in optical quantum gating in the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) process [1] for implementing quantum gates.

A high performance free-space Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) transceiver system is assessed as to its viability for routing collinear entangled photons in place of the classical optical signals for which it was designed. Explicit calculations demonstrate that entanglement in the input state is retained through transit of the system without intrinsic loss. Introducing spatial degrees of freedom changed the entanglement so that it could be manifested at remote locations, as required in non-local Bell test measurements or Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Protocols. It was also found that by adding proper components, the exit state could be changed from being frequency entangled to polarization entangled, with respect to the (remote) paths of the photons. Finally it was found possible to route a complete entangled state to either of the two remote users by proper selection of the discrete frequencies in the input state. Each entanglement in the photon states was maximal, hence suited for Quantum Information processing (QIP) applications. © (2017) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Coherent optical RF receivers constructed in self-homodyne configurations have gained considerable attention due to its simplicity and cost-efficiency. Rigorous symmetry is required in such system to suppress the laser phase noise. A method for evaluation of the un-eliminated laser phase noise in self-homodyne coherent optical RF receivers has been presented in this paper. In our proposed scheme, the un-eliminated laser phase noise is acquired by simply inserting an FBG in the in-phase arm and is found to be dependent on the interferometer asymmetry, i.e., the path imbalance of the interferometer arms. With series of simulations, the variance of the un-eliminated laser phase noise obtained by our method becomes larger when the path imbalance is increasing. The simulation results show that, variance increases with the asymmetrical time delays of two interferometer arms. Therefore, this method is very helpful in obtaining further insight into the system symmetry and is also a good guidance for the adjustment of the interferometer architecture to achieve the optimized path equality.

The performance of electronic systems for radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analysis is critical for agile radar and communications systems, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) operations in challenging electromagnetic (EM) environments, and EM-environment situational awareness. While considerable progress has been made in size, weight, and power (SWaP) and performance metrics in conventional RF technology platforms, fundamental limits make continued improvements increasingly difficult. Alternatively, we propose employing cascaded transduction processes in a chip-scale nano-optomechanical system (NOMS) to achieve a spectral sensor with exceptional signal-linearity, high dynamic range, narrow spectral resolution and ultra-fast sweep times. By leveraging the optimal capabilities of photons and phonons, the system we pursue in this work has performance metrics scalable well beyond the fundamental limitations inherent to all electronic systems. In our device architecture, information processing is performed on wide-bandwidth RF-modulated optical signals by photon-mediated phononic transduction of the modulation to the acoustical-domain for narrow-band filtering, and then back to the optical-domain by phonon-mediated phase modulation (the reverse process). Here, we rely on photonics to efficiently distribute signals for parallel processing, and on phononics for effective and flexible RF-frequency manipulation. This technology is used to create RF-filters that are insensitive to the optical wavelength, with wide center frequency bandwidth selectivity (1-100GHz), ultra-narrow filter bandwidth (1-100MHz), and high dynamic range (70dB), which we will present. Additionally, using this filter as a building block, we will discuss current results and progress toward demonstrating a multichannel-filter with a bandwidth of < 10MHz per channel, while minimizing cumulative optical/ acoustic/ optical transduced insertion-loss to ideally < 10dB. I will present recent work at Caltech on the integration of optomechanical crystals for light and sound with electronic superconducting quantum circuits. Utilizing the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer platform, we have made key advances in the fabrication and integration of extremely low loss microwave phonon structures and low loss microwave superconducting resonators of high impedance. These technical advancements offer several intriguing opportunities for quantum information processing and networking with phonons, photons, and electrons in an integrated, wafer-scale platform. The focus of my talk will be on two examples of our efforts in this direction: (i) nonreciprocal photon transport and amplification arising from synthetic magnetic flux and reservoir engineering in an optomechanical crystal circuit, and (ii) waveguide-QED systems consisting of microwave-bandgap circuits with embedded transmon-like qubits.

The progress in quantum information theory and the advances in the manipulation and control of quantum systems promise the advent of an era where quantum technologies will significantly change the fields of communication, computation and sensors. Even though some of these new technologies have already been successfully implemented, such as quantum key distribution [1] and quantum clocks [2], to fully develop the potential of these technologies we need to find new compact, reliable and robust quantum systems. In particular, we need to be able to control and process the elusive and delicate features of quantum entangled states, which are at the core of quantum technologies. In this sense, quantum photonics arises as one mature technology where most of the quantum information building blocks have been demonstrated. Most of the achievements in quantum photonics are hindered by the same limitations as the classical processing of light: weak interactions with matter, which impede efficient nonlinear processes, and large devices with dimensions many times the wavelength of light. Plasmonic devices may hold the key to overcome these hurdles due to strong interaction with light, small volumes of interaction, and the possibility to engineer and fabricate suitable nanostructures to address particular tasks [3].Here we present our progress on the control of quantum entanglement of photonic states with a single plasmonic nanostructure, smaller than the wavelength of the involved modes. In particular, by using modes of light matching the symmetries of the nanostructure, we present experimental evidence that we can control the interaction of entangled states with single nanostructures. Our structure consists of a single circular aperture on a thin gold film. The diameter of the aperture is 750±10nm. Fraunhofer IZM, Technische Universitat Berlin and eagleyard photonics present various implementations of current micro-optical assemblies for high quality free space laser beam forming and efficient fiber coupling. The laser modules shown are optimized for fast and automated assembly in small form factor packages via state-of-the-art active alignment machinery, using alignment and joining processes that have been developed and established in various industrial research projects. Operational wavelengths and optical powers ranging from 600 to 1600 nm and from 1 mW to several W respectively are addressed, for application in high-resolution low-power laser spectroscopy, telecom and optical sensors, up to the high optical power levels needed in industrial and medical laser treatment.
