Summary form only given. The rich internal degrees of freedom of magnetic domain walls (DW) make them an attractive complement to electron charge for exploring new concepts of storage, transport, and processing of information. We utilize the tuneable internal structure of a DW in perpendicularly magnetized GaMnAsP/GaAs ferromagnetic semiconductor and demonstrate devices in which piezo-electrically controlled magnetic anisotropy yields large mobility variations for current driven DW motion . [1, 2] We directly observe and piezo-electric control the Walker breakdown separating two regimes with different mobilities . The piezo-electric control allows to experimentally assess the upper and lower boundaries of the characteristic ratio of adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin transfer torques in the current driven DW motion . Apart from current induced DW motion, also optically generated electron spins can move DWs . The direction of DW motion depends on the photon helicity in our GaMnAsP/GaAs devices and we identify optical spin transfer torque (oSTT) [4] as the underlying mechanism . We further discuss possibilities to apply and electrically control oSTT induced DW motion to thin magnetic metal films . Optically driven DW motion can be very efficient and high velocities maybe achieved since intrinsic DW pinning [5] does not occur when the entire DW is simultaneously exposed to perpendicular polarized electron spins . We also identify a polarisation independent contribution for light-induced DW motion where the DW is attracted to the hot-spot generated by the focused laser light . Unlike magnetic field and current driven DW motion, light-induced DW motion provides an optical tweezers like ability to position and locally probe DWs .

The development of highly non-linear silicon devices is a fundamental step towards the realization of low power optical signal processing devices. In order to achieve this final goal several constraints have to be overcome. In particular, the next generation of opto-electronic integrated devices must be ultra-compact, compatible with foundry model fabrication processing and exhibit low power consumption. In recent years, many non-linear photonic devices have been demonstrated based on the Silicon On Insulator (SOI) technology platform allowing for an unprecedented level of integration. Many research groups have demonstrated non-linear devices that can perform wavelength conversion, demultiplexing operations and all-optical switching. In particular, in order to perform wavelength conversion, Four Wave Mixing (FWM) effects are typically used in silicon, showing conversion efficiencies that have ranged from -40 dB to -8 dB. The latter figure was demonstrated on a 8-cm long waveguide with a very high pump peak power (Pp=5 W) and a lateral pin junction to reduce the free carrier losses due to two photon absorption. In order to decrease the pump power, resonant devices have been considered and demonstrated in the past few years. In such structures the non-linear response is substantially improved due to the field enhancement of the cavity, which is proportional to the cavity Q-factor.

Tens of thousands of optical data transmission links are currently installed in all four experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) [1] for the transmission of timing, control and read-out data to and from the detector systems. Work has started on identifying new technologies and optical components which could meet the requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC);an upgrade of approximately of an order of magnitude to the luminosity of the LHC planned to take place in 10 years time. Silicon photonics is one of the newly available technologies being investigated for future data transmission applications at the HL-LHC. A silicon photonics circuit, with components that can resist the harsh radiation environments of the HL-LHC [2], could be of interest to HL-LHC applications because of its potentially small size, high speed, and low power consumption. Radiation tolerant components for HL-LHC applications must withstand radiation levels several orders of magnitude higher, both in terms of non-ionizing and ionizing radiation, than other environments (e.g. space) where radiation is a concern.

In this paper, the problems of recognition of individual particle images in the volume of optical medium conditioned upon their coherent superposition are described. To evaluate the efficiency of methods of particle image recognition, a typical problem of analysis of the intensity distributions formed by laser radiation scattered on suspended particles in a volume of an optical medium is considered. As a result of applying of the method of statistical accounting of particle images, based on the edge-point linking and thresholding technique, normalized density distributions of particles in the image plane are obtained. Evaluation of the performance of applied recognition method for individual particle images is conducted using correlation analysis to assess the quality of obtained images.

Phase-shifting interferometry is a coherent optical method that combines high accuracy with high measurement speeds. However, despite its advantageous properties, the inference of the object amplitude and the phase, herein termed wavefront reconstruction is not a trivial task owing to, namely, the Poissonian noise associated with the measurement process and to the 27 phase periodicity of the observation mechanism. In this paper, we formulate the wavefront reconstruction (phase and amplitude) as an inverse problem where the amplitude and the absolute phase are assumed to admit sparse linear representations in suitable sparsifying transforms. We introduce the sparse phase and amplitude reconstruction (SPAR) algorithm. SPAR takes into full consideration the Poissonian (photon counting) measurements and uses data adaptive BM3D frames as a sparse representation for amplitude and absolute phase.
