A practical all optical quantum calculator/simulator is expected to need a number of gates which will be extraordinarily high. A key challenge towards the achievement of an optical quantum computer is that of a ¡°deterministic?source of entangled photons, designed to be compatible with standard cleanroom processing and integration technology. This paper discuss how a relatively ¡°niche?QD system (site-controlled Pyramidal quantum dots, grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy in etched GaAs (111)B tetrahedral recesses) actually offer a number of unexpected potentiality for entangled photon emission.

We developed a highly parallel simulator of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of objects with arbitrary spatial distributions. This Monte Carlo method based simulator models the object as a tetrahedron-based mesh, and implements an advanced importance sampling scheme. This new method makes OCT simulations more practical, since the corresponding serial Central processing Unit (CPU) based implementation requires approximately 360 hours to simulate OCT imaging of a single B-scan. We implemented this new simulator on Graphics processing Units (GPUs) using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) platform and programming model by NvIDIA. We demonstrated that our new simulator requires one order of magnitude less time, compared to its serial implementation, to simulate the same OCT images. Our new parallel OCT simulator could be an important and practical tool to study different OCT phenomena and to design novel OCT systems with superior imaging performance.

Frequency Scanning Interferometry (FSI) generally results in superior optical performance comparing with other 3-dimensional measuring methods as its hardware structure is fixed in operation and only the light frequency is scanned in a specific spectral band without vertical scanning of the target surface or the objective lens. However, it still suffers from optical noise due to polarization characteristic of target surfaces and relatively long processing time due to the number of images acquired in frequency scanning phase. First, a Polarization-based Frequency Scanning Interferometry (PFSI) is proposed for optical noise robustness. It consists of tunable laser for light source, lambda/4 plate in front of reference mirror, lambda/4 plate in front of target object, polarizing beam splitter, polarizer in front of image sensor, polarizer in front of the fiber coupled light source, lambda/2 plate between PBS and polarizer of the light source. Using the proposed system, we can solve the problem of fringe image with low contrast by using polarization technique. Also, we can control light distribution of object beam and reference beam. Second the signal processing acceleration method is proposed for PFSI, based on parallel processing architecture, which consists of parallel processing hardware and software such as Graphic processing Unit (GPU) and Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). Finally, the proposed system is evaluated in terms of accuracy and processing speed through a series of experiment and the obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed system and method.

In this paper, we discuss various aspects of the control and sensing in a flexible wing aircraft using embedded LPFG (Long Period Fiber Grating). Driven by the need to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce fuel burn, interest in light-weight structures for next generation aircraft has been on the rise. However, in order to fully exploit novel lightweight structures, there is a critical need for distributed sensing along the entire wing span and its integration with closed-loop control systems. A model of an LPFG sensor string embedded in an Euler-Bernoulli beam is proposed along with an associated control algorithm.

We study the impact of cavity photon lifetime tuning on the performance of long-wavelength wafer-fused vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (vCSELs). By selectively etching the topmost layer of the exposed distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) we both reduce the cavity photon lifetime and increase the output-coupling DBR loss rate, thus trading increased bandwidth, output power, and slope efficiency for a small increase in threshold current. Our technique allows us to either individually or on an industrial wafer-scale adjust and tune the performance of post-processed vCSELs to optimize the performance for specific applications or to help correct for processing non-uniformities. Using our etching technique we also extract the internal quantum efficiency of 1300 and 1500-nm vCSELs.

In this paper we present the FDMA-PON (Frequency Division Multiple Access - Passive Optical Network) architecture proposed by the FP7 EU STREP project titled "FABULOUS", focusing on downstream transmission. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed architecture allows to reach 16 Gbps aggregated capacity per downstream wavelength over an optical distribution network with 30dB loss, still using direct-detection receivers and requiring relatively low speed digital signal processing at the ONU side.

The conversion of sunlight into laser light by direct solar pumping is of ever-increasing importance because broadband, temporally constant, sunlight is converted into laser light, which can be a source of narrowband, collimated, rapidly pulsed, radiation with the possibility of obtaining extremely high brightness and intensity. Nonlinear processes, such as harmonic generation, might be used to obtain broad wavelength coverage, including the ultraviolet wavelengths, where the solar flux is very weak. The direct excitation of large lasers by sunlight offers the prospect of a drastic reduction in the cost of coherent optical radiation for high average power materials processing. This renewable laser has a large potential for many applications such as high-temperature materials processing, renewable magnesium-hydrogen energy cycle and so on. We propose here a scalable TEM00 mode solar laser pumping scheme, which is composed of four first-stage 1.13 m diameter Fresnel lenses with its respective folding mirrors mounted on a two-axis automatic solar tracker. Concentrated solar power at the four focal spots of these Fresnel lenses are focused individually along a common 3.5 mm diameter, 70 mm length Nd:YAG rod via four pairs of second-stage fused-silica spherical lenses and third-stage 2D-CPCs (Compound Parabolic Concentrator), sitting just above the laser rod which is also double-pass pumped by four v-shaped pumping cavities. Distilled water cools both the rod and the concentrators. 15.4 W TEM00 solar laser power is numerically calculated, corresponding to 6.7 times enhancement in laser beam brightness.

Graded junction, carrier energy and momentum engineering concepts have been utilized to realize a high intensity 100 nW 5GHz Silicon Avalanche based LED (Si Av LED). A silicon 0.35 micron RF bi-polar process was used as design and processing technology. Particularly, the carrier momentum and energy distributions were modeled in graded junction Silicon p+-i-n structures, and utilized to increase optical yield. Best performance are up to 750nW emission in a 7 micron square active area at 10 v and 1mA. The device show up to 5 GHz modulation bandwidth. The spectral range is from 450 nm to 850 nm with an emphasized components in the white spectral region. The process is greatly CMOS compatible. The technology is particularly suitable for application in futuristic on-chip micro-photonic systems, lab-on chip systems, silicon-based micro display systems, on chip optical links, and optical inter-connects systems.

Semiconductors such as Si and GaAs are transparent to infrared laser radiation with wavelengths >1.2 mu m. Focusing laser light at the back surface of a semiconductor wafer enables a novel processing regime that utilizes this transparency. However, in previous experiments with ultrashort laser pulses we have found that nonlinear absorption makes it impossible to achieve sufficient optical intensity to induce material modification far below the front surface. Using a recently developed Tm:fiber laser system producing pulses as short as 7 ns with peak powers exceeding 100 kW, we have demonstrated it is possible to ablate the "backside" surface of 500-600 mu m thick Si and GaAs wafers. We studied laser-induced morphology changes at front and back surfaces of wafers and obtained modification thresholds for multi-pulse irradiation and surface processing in trenches. A significantly higher back surface modification threshold in Si compared to front surface is possibly attributed to nonlinear absorption and light propagation effects. This unique processing regime has the potential to enable novel applications such as semiconductor welding for microelectronics, photovoltaic, and consumer electronics.
