A practical all optical quantum calculator/simulator is expected to need a number of gates which will be extraordinarily high. A key challenge towards the achievement of an optical quantum computer is that of a “deterministic” source of entangled photons, designed to be compatible with standard cleanroom processing and integration technology. This paper discuss how a relatively “niche” QD system (site-controlled Pyramidal quantum dots, grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy in etched GaAs (111)B tetrahedral recesses) actually offer a number of unexpected potentiality for entangled photon emission.

We study the impact of cavity photon lifetime tuning on the performance of long-wavelength wafer-fused vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (vCSELs). By selectively etching the topmost layer of the exposed distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) we both reduce the cavity photon lifetime and increase the output-coupling DBR loss rate, thus trading increased bandwidth, output power, and slope efficiency for a small increase in threshold current. Our technique allows us to either individually or on an industrial wafer-scale adjust and tune the performance of post-processed vCSELs to optimize the performance for specific applications or to help correct for processing non-uniformities. Using our etching technique we also extract the internal quantum efficiency of 1300 and 1500-nm vCSELs.

An on-chip algorithm for the allocation of a hit to a single pixel in the presence of charge sharing in a highly segmented pixel detector is presented. It has been developed to advance pixel detector technology for experiments with X-ray beams at a synchrotron facility. Its key elements are: activation of groups of pixels (neighborhood_active), comparisons of peak amplitudes within the active neighborhood, virtual pixels that recover composite signals, ability to create event driven strobes to control comparisons of fractional signals between neighboring pixels and finally latching of the results of these comparisons. The minivIPIC prototype was designed in a 130 nm process, as a proof of feasibility. The chip contains an array of 32×32 100×100 μm~2 pixels. Analog and digital signals are exchanged between pixels, forming an extensive inter-pixel connection grid, whose routing to minimize parasistics, represented the major challenge. The design details of the chip are provided.

Depth of interaction detector is essential to achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. Our group has developed an isotropic 3D detector, X'tal cube. For the crystal block, a laser processing was applied to a monolithic crystal to generate laser-processed boundaries (LPBs) inside the crystal block. The LPB is expected to give appropriate photon scattering effect as well as reduction of assembling steps compared with gluing small pieces of crystals. In this paper, we introduced the LPB to our former 4-layer DOI detector based on the reflector control, which projects 3D positions of interaction crystal to a 2D position histogram of the Anger-type calculation. The key point of proposed detector are that we set photo detectors at only one side and applied LPBs to crystals. To investigate features of four layer DOI detector combined with LPBs, we compared three conditions for the gaps between crystals in the 2 × 2 array: the air, the room temperature vulcanizing (RTv) rubber and the LPB. In the LPB case, actual crystal size was 4 mm × 4 mm × 5 mm, and the 2 × 2 segmentations were made by the laser processing. For these three patterns, we carried out both experiments and simulations. Almost all crystal responses were separated in the proposed detector with the LPB, although separation was not clearer than results with the other conditions because responses corresponded to the 2 × 2 crystal array had a tendency to get together. On the other hand, clusters can be discriminated clearer at detector edge.

Effect of transverse induced stress on fiber optic Sagnac interferometer has been studied. The Sagnac loop is designed with conventional single mode fiber. Applying transverse stress on the fiber loop, resulting interference patterns are captured by a CCD and hence analyzed to obtain the angular shift of deformations by image processing technique using MATLAB. Data are taken from the single and double fiber optic loops of the Sagnac interferometric configurations and hence a comparative study is performed to achieve better sensitivity.

The application of the digital stethoscope system is a new tendency in methods of cardiac auscultation. Heart sounds, generated by the fluctuations of blood velocity and vibrations of muscle structure, are an important signal in the primary diagnosis of heart diseases. Since the XIXs century for physical examination an analog stethoscope was used, but the development of microelectronics enable the construction of digital stethoscopes which started modern phonocardiography. The typical hardware of the system could be divided into analog and digital parts, respectively. The first one consists of microphone and pre-amplifier. The second one contains a microcontroller with peripherals for data saving and transmission. Usually the specialized software is applied for the signal acquisition and digital signal processing (filtering, spectral analysis and others). This paper presents an overview of methods used in cardiac auscultation and expected developing path in the future. It also contains the description of our digital stethoscope system, which is planned to be used in poliphysiographical studies.

Ag-embedded indium tin oxide (ITO) films were deposited on Corning 1737 glass by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering under an Ar or Ar/O-2 mixed gas ambient with a combination of ITO and Ag targets that were sputtered alternately by switching on and off the shutter of the sputter gun. The effects of a subsequent surface treatment using H-2 and H-2 + O-2 mixed gas plasma were also examined. The specific resistance of the as-deposited Ag-embedded ITO sample was lower than that of normal ITO. The transmittance was quenched when Ag was incorporated in ITO. To enhance the specific resistance of Ag-embedded ITO, a surface treatment was conducted using H-2 or H-2 + O-2 mixed gas plasma. Although all samples showed improved specific resistance after the H-2 plasma treatment, the transmittance was quenched due to the formation of agglomerated metals on the surface. The specific resistance of the film was improved without any deterioration of the transmittance after a H-2 + O-2 mixed gas plasma treatment. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.v. All rights reserved.
