Development and in-vivo validation of a Continuous Wave (CW) functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) system is presented. The system is wearable, fiber-less, multi-channel (16x16, 256 channels) and expandable and it relies on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for light detection. SiPMs are inexpensive, low voltage and resilient semiconductor light detectors, whose performances are analogous to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The advantage of SiPMs with respect to PMTs is that they allow direct contact with the scalp and avoidance of optical fibers. In fact, the coupling of SiPMs and light emitting diodes (LEDs) allows the transfer of the analog signals to and from the scalp through thin electric cables that greatly increase the system flexibility. Moreover, the optical probes, mechanically resembling electroencephalographic electrodes, are robust against motion artifacts. In order to increase the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of the fNIRS acquisition and to decrease ambient noise contamination, a digital lock-in technique was implemented through LEDs modulation and SiPMs signal processing chain. In-vivo validation proved the system capabilities of detecting functional brain activity in the sensorimotor cortices. When compared to other state-of-the-art wearable fNIRS systems, the single photon sensitivity and dynamic range of SiPMs can exploit the long and variable inter-optode distances needed for estimation of brain functional hemodynamics using CW-fNIRS.

A high speed thin film lithium niobate modulator device is integrated with a Bragg grating for in situ sideband filtering. The configuration has potential for high efficiency linear intensity modulation at bandwidths exceeding 70 GHz. This proof of concept study explores the benefits of in situ versus ex situ processing and examines the differences in nonlinear optical models for this case where the traditional Jacobi-Anger expansion model for phase modulation is no longer true.

The cylindrical lens brings the orbital angular momentum (OAM) into the original Hermite-Gaussian (HG) beam. The OAM of such a beam is the sum of the vortex and astigmatic components, and can reach large values (tens and hundreds of thousands per photon). We get the exact formula for OAM of such astigmatic HG (aHG) beams. Using intensity distributions of the aHG beam in foci of two cylindrical lenses, we measure the normalized OAM of the elliptic aHG beam, which differs only by 7% from its theoretical OAM value (experimental OAM is -13.62, theoretical OAM is -14.76).

A 192 x 128 pixel single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) time-resolved single photon counting (TCPSC) image sensor is implemented in ST microelectronics 40nm CMOS technology. The 13 % fill-factor, 18.4 x 9.2 mu m pixel contains a 33 ps resolution, 135 ns full-scale, 12-bit time to digital converter (TDC) with 0.9 LSB differential and 5.64 LSB integral nonlinearity (DNL/INL). The sensor achieves a mean 219 ps full-width half maximum (FWHM) impulse response function (IRF) and is operable at up to 18.6 kfps. Cylindrical microlenses with a concentration factor of 3.25 increase the fill-factor to 42 %. The median dark count rate (DCR) is 25 Hz at 1.5 v excess bias. Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) results are presented.

The paper proposes and investigates solutions to the computing and bandwidth resource allocation problem in Multi-Provider Network Function virtualization (NFv) environment. The scenario is characterized by Cloud Infrastructures (CI) managed by different providers and interconnected by an Elastic Optical Networks (EON). The objective is to allocate resources for a given number of Service Function Chains (SFC) known in advance so as to minimize the sum of the processing and bandwidth costs and to take into account both the different processing costs charged by the Cloud Infrastructure (CI) providers and the sub-carrier consecutiveness, spectrum continuity and spectrum clash constraints. In particular we evaluate the operational cost saving that the proposed solutions allow us to obtain with respect to the case in which traditional resource allocation algorithms are applied.

Generating entangled photons on monolithic chips is a significant progress towards real-life applications of optical quantum information processing such as quantum key distribution and quantum computing. Here we present our recent achievements in generating polarization entangled photons on monolithic III-v semiconductor chips without any off-chip component. We demonstrate the direct generation of broadband polarization entangled photons from a semiconductor chip for the first time with a record degree of entanglement. We also show an alternative approach for polarization entangled photon generation on the same epitaxial structure, which enabled a single chip generating both co-polarized and cross-polarized entangled photons. With recent progress on pump laser integration, our results pave the way for fully integrated entangled photon sources in the foreseeable future.

Here we study three different types of astigmatic laser beams (ALB), whose complex amplitude in the Fresnel diffraction zone is described by the complex argument Hermite polynomial of the order (n, 0). The first type is a circularly symmetric optical vortex with a topological charge n after passing through a cylindrical lens. On propagation, the optical vortex "splits" into n first-order optical vortices. Its orbital angular momentum (OAM) per photon is equal to n. The second type is the ALB of order (n, 0), which is generated when an elliptical laser beam passes through a cylindrical lens. The third type is an elliptical optical vortex with a topological charge n after passing through a cylindrical lens. With a special choice of the ellipticity degree (1:3), such a beam retains its structure upon propagation and the degenerate intensity null on the optical axis does not "split" into n optical vortices. Such a beam has fractional OAM not equal to n.

It is shown that the resolution in microsphere-based imaging is enhanced with decreasing the period of nanoplasmonic arrays used for structured illumination of nanoscale objects represented by dye-doped fluorescent nanospheres. It is demonstrated that the maximal resolution about lambda/6-lambda/7, where lambda is the operation wavelength, is possible without post-imaging processing. It is shown that achieving the maximal resolution requires the coupling of the nanosphere emission to the localized surface plasmon resonances in the periodic arrays.

The development of 5G wireless technology is in progress looking to cope with the increasing demands for high capacity, low latency, and ubiquitous mobile access. Cloud/Centralized Radio Access Networks (C-RAN) has been proposed as a promising approach to address the 5G benchmarks. C-RAN is a rising mobile network architecture based on the centralization and pooling of baseband processing elements, with the scope of increasing resource utilization efficiency and air-interface performance gains with fast scaling multi-cell coordination. In this paper we focus on proposing and evaluating a flexible low-latency cross-connect (XC) switch that allows a dynamic scheduling of networking resources between baseband units (BBUs) and remote radio heads (RRHs) in C-RAN deployments. On the one hand, we develop a control plane mechanism for manipulating the XC configuration and state data based on a custom YANG model and Network Configuration (NTCONF) protocol. Using a standard open NETCONF interface, automation of heterogeneous C-RAN resource assignment can be facilitated for 5G architectures. Secondly, we evaluate the performance of our XC in relation to the C-RAN stringent requirements and show that the latency and jitter introduced have negligible influence compared to radio interface limits. The impact of switching delay on the performance of a live system has yet to be tested however, a measured average switching time of 252 ms could still disrupt the ongoing connections.

Silicon photonics is becoming a consolidated technology, mainly in the telecom/datacom sector, but with a great potential in the chemical and biomedical sensor market too, mainly due to its CMOS compatibility, which allows mass-fabrication of huge numbers of miniaturized devices at a very low cost per chip. Integrated photonic sensors, typically based on resonators, interferometers, or periodic structures, are easy to multiplex as the light is confined in optical waveguides. In this work, we present a silicon-photonic sensor capable of measuring refractive index and chemical binding of biomolecules on the surface, using a low-cost phase interrogation scheme. The sensor consists of a pair of balanced Mach-Zelmder interferometers with interaction lengths of 2.5 mm and 22 mm, wound to a sensing area of only 500 mu m x500 mu m. The phase interrogation is performed with a fixed laser and an active phase demodulation approach based on a phase generated carrier (PGC) technique using a phase demodulator integrated within the chip. No laser tuning is required, and the technique can extract the univocal phase value with no sensitivity fading. The detection only requires a photo-receiver per interferometer, analog-to-digital conversion, and simple processing performed in real-time. We present repeatable and linear refractive index measurements, with a detection limit down to 4.7.10(-7) RIU. We also present sensing results on a chemically-functionalized sample, where anti-BSA to BSA (bovine serum albumin) binding curves are clearly visible for concentrations down to 5 ppm. Considering the advantages of silicon photonics, this device has great potential over several applications in the chemical/biochemical sensing industry.
