This article summarizes a measurement of gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cells during their thermal processing. These solar cells compared to standard silicon cells have better efficiency and high thermal stability. However, their use is partly limited due to high acquisition costs. For these reasons, GaAs cells are deployed only in the most demanding applications where their features are needed, such as space applications. In this work, GaAs solar cells were studied in a high temperature range within 30-650 degrees C where their functionality and changes in surface topology were monitored. These changes were recorded using an electron microscope which determined the position of the defects;using an atomic force microscope we determined the roughness of the surface and an infrared camera that showed us the thermal radiated places of the defected parts of the cell. The electrical characteristics of the cells during processing were determined by its current-voltage characteristics. Despite the occurrence of subtle changes on the solar cell with newly created surface features after 300 degrees C thermal processing, its current-voltage characteristic remained without a significant change.

Surface characterization of the working components has always been a subject of interest among researchers and industry specialists. Especially in the aerospace industry where the aerodynamic capabilities are largely altered by the surface quality of the component of interest, there remains an extensive need for developing systems for effectively characterizing the surface quality. To realize an optical based non-contact and an in-line surface roughness measurement system, it is essential to understand the relationship between the quality of the surface and statistical parameter of the reflected speckles. The range of the measurement system being proportional to the wavelength of light used makes the analysis fundamentally important in order to understand the properties of speckles at a different wavelength. In this context, this paper examines the nature of the formed IR speckles from three different diffusers by analyzing their raw structure. Image processing algorithms that are developed study the different parameters of the 8-bit binary speckles, namely, the fractal property and number of connecting components. The paper also discusses the future work direction on relating the proposed analysis to derive the algorithm required for evaluating the surface finish parameters.

In this work we present the process of fabrication and optimization of a prototype of a cell electrostimulator device for medical application combining physical vapor deposition and laser ablation. The fabrication of the first prototype begins with a deposition of a thin layer of 200 nm of aluminium on a borosilicate glass substrate using physical vapor deposition (PvD). In the second stage the geometry design of the electrostimulator is made in a CAD-like software available in a Nd: YvO4 Rofin Power line 20E, operating at the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm and 20 ns pulse width. Choosing the proper laser parameters the negative of the electrostimulator desing is ablated. After that the glass is assembled between two polycarbonate sheets and a thick sheet of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The PDMS sheet has a round hole in where cells are placed. There is also included a thin soda-lime silicate glass (100 mu m) between the electrostimulator and the PMDS to prevent the cells for being in contact with the electric circuit. In order to control the electrical signal applied to the electrostimulator is used a digital I/O device from National Instruments (USB-6501) which provides 5 v at the output monitored by a software programmed in LabvIEW. Finally, the optical and electrical characterization of the cell electrostimulator device is presented.

The paper presents a new sharpening method that can be applied for the low-contrast medical images as well as general edge detection. The method provides more reliable diagnosis of the vascular system based on image processing. The new contouring method was compared with Sobel, low-frequency filtration and Canny edge detection methods on the example images with micro-capillaries.

Multistage integration of visual information in the brain allows people to respond quickly to most significant stimuli while preserving the ability to recognize small details in the image. Implementation of this principle in technical systems can lead to more efficient processing procedures. The multistage approach to image processing, described in this paper, comprises main types of cortical multistage convergence. One of these types occurs within each visual pathway and the other between the pathways. This approach maps input images into a flexible hierarchy which reflects the complexity of the image data. The procedures of temporal image decomposition and hierarchy formation are described in mathematical terms. The multistage system highlights spatial regularities, which are passed through a number of transformational levels to generate a coded representation of the image which encapsulates, in a computer manner, structure on different hierarchical levels in the image. At each processing stage a single output result is computed to allow a very quick response from the system. The result is represented as an activity pattern, which can be compared with previously computed patterns on the basis of the closest match.

The use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials in the aerospace industry have far improved the load carrying properties and the design flexibility of aircraft structures. A high strength to weight ratio, low thermal conductivity, and a low thermal expansion coefficient gives it an edge for applications demanding stringent loading conditions. Specifically, this paper focuses on the behavior of CFRP composites under stringent thermal loads. The properties of composites are largely affected by external thermal loads, especially when the loads are beyond the glass temperature, Tg, of the composite. Beyond this, the composites are subject to prominent changes in mechanical and thermal properties which may further lead to material decomposition. Furthermore, thermal damage formation being chaotic, a strict dimension cannot be associated with the formed damage. In this context, this paper focuses on comparing multiple speckle image analysis algorithms to effectively characterize the formed thermal damages on the CFRP specimen. This would provide us with a fast method for quantifying the extent of heat damage in carbon composites, thus reducing the required time for inspection. The image analysis methods used for the comparison include fractal dimensional analysis of the formed speckle pattern and analysis of number and size of various connecting elements in the binary image.

In the framework of the PixFEL project, a processing channel for pixel sensor readout has been designed and fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS technology. The detector under development is aimed at applications to coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (CXDI) at the next generation free electron lasers (FELs). Especially in the detector region around the hole for the unscattered photon beam, pixels will be subjected to huge doses of ionizing radiation, in the order of tens of Grad(SiO2), during their lifetime. The total ionizing dose (TID) for the front-end electronics, while significantly reduced by the shielding effect of the detector, is still expected to exceed one Grad(SiO2). This paper investigates the performance degradation in the PixFEL readout circuit, in particular in the charge sensitive amplifier, after exposure to X-ray doses up to IOU Mrad(SiO2).

In this paper, we investigate the recovery of range and spectral profiles associated with remote three-dimensional scenes sensed via single-photon multispectral Lidar (MSL). We consider different spatial/spectral sampling strategies and compare their performance for similar overall numbers of detected photons. For a regular spatial grid, the first strategy consists of sampling all the spatial locations of the grid for each of the wavelengths. Conversely, the three other strategies consist, for each spatial location, of acquiring a reduced number of wavelengths, chosen randomly or in a deterministic manner. We propose a fully automated computational method, adapted for the different sampling strategies in order to recover the target range profile, as well as the reflectivity profiles associated with the different wavelengths. The performance of the four sampling strategies is illustrated using a single photon MSL system with four wavelengths. The results presented demonstrate that although the first strategy usually provides more accurate results, the subsampling strategies do not exhibit a significant performance degradation, particularly for extremely photon-starved data (down to one photon per pixel on average).
