Reservoir computing devices are promising as energy-efficient machine learning hardware for real-time information processing. However, some online algorithms for reservoir computing are not simple enough for hardware implementation. In this study, we focus on the first order reduced and controlled error (FORCE) algorithm for online learning with reservoir computing models. We propose a two-step FORCE algorithm by simplifying the operations in the FORCE algorithm, which can reduce necessary memories. We analytically and numerically show that the proposed algorithm can converge faster than the original FORCE algorithm.

Edge computing is commonly adapted to reduce network delay and fluctuation in the traditional cloud-terminal architecture. Many research teams have been dedicated to algorithms and optimizations in the cloud-edge data cache and computation offloading schemes, while there is a blank in practical implementation to facilitate such a paradigm. In this work, we proposed a component-based framework that facilitates dynamic partitioning of a software program. We have designed and implemented the very first test-bed for further optimizing the components distribution strategy among cloud, edge, and terminal devices. Experiments have revealed the characteristics of components execution in the proposed architecture, showing that the system can improve computing performance under the real-world unstable network environments.

Nanoscale integrated photonic devices and circuits offer a path to ultra-low power computation at the few-photon level. Here we propose an optical circuit that performs a ubiquitous operation: the controlled, random-access readout of a collection of stored memory phases or, equivalently, the computation of the inner product of a vector of phases with a binary "selector" vector, where the arithmetic is done modulo 2pi and the result is encoded in the phase of a coherent field. This circuit, a collection of cascaded interferometers driven by a coherent input field, demonstrates the use of coherence as a computational resource, and of the use of recently-developed mathematical tools for modeling optical circuits with many coupled parts. The construction extends in a straightforward way to the computation of matrix-vector and matrix-matrix products, and, with the inclusion of an optical feedback loop, to the computation of a "weighted" readout of stored memory phases. We note some applications of these circuits for error correction and for computing tasks requiring fast vector inner products, e.g. statistical classification and some machine learning algorithms.

Recent advances in the design, development, and deployment of U. S. Army Research Laboratory's (ARL) Multimodal Signature Database (MMSDB) create a state-of-the-art database system with Web-based access through a Web interface designed specifically for research and development. Tens of thousands of signatures are currently available for researchers to support their algorithm development and refinement for sensors and other security systems. Each dataset is stored in (Hierarchical Data Format 5 (HDF5) format for easy modeling and storing of signatures and archived sensor data, ground truth, calibration information, algorithms, and other documentation. Archived HDF5 formatted data provides the basis for computational interoperability across a variety of tools including MATLAB, Octave, and Python. The database has a Web-based front-end with public and restricted access interfaces, along with 24/7 availability and support. This paper describes the overall design of the system, and the recent enhancements and future vision, including the ability for researchers to share algorithms, data, and documentation in the cloud, and providing an ability to run algorithms and software for testing and evaluation purposes remotely across multiple domains and computational tools. The paper will also describe in detail the HDF5 format for several multimodal sensor types.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important and pervasive in the modern world. The widespread adoption of AI algorithms is reflected in the extensive range of HW devices on which they can be deployed, from high-performance computing nodes to low-power embedded devices. Given the large set of heterogeneous resources where AI algorithms can be deployed, finding the most suitable device and its con-figuration is challenging, even for experts. We propose a data-driven approach to assist AI adopters and developers in choosing the optimal HW resource. Our approach is based on three key elements: i) fair benchmarking of target AI algorithms on a set of hetero-geneous platforms, ii) creation of ML models to learn the behaviour of these AI algorithms, and iii) support guidelines to help identify the best deployment option for a given AI algorithm. We demonstrate our approach on a specific (and relevant) use case: Deep Neural Network (DNN) inference on embedded devices. © 2023 by the authors. All rights reserved.

computing techniques like Cloud computing demand for very high level of parallelism, which has been achieved at hardware level through advancements in Computer Architecture. However to exploit the maximum benefits of the hardware parallelism, the software solutions implemented in such systems also shall exhibit parallel processing capabilities. Most of the popular problem solving methods and algorithms need not be capable for imparting parallelism in software solutions. This opens up the scope for the exploration aiming alternative solution models with capabilities to achieve parallel, scalable and distributable nature in processes. This study illustrates the scope of seeking alternative process models to achieve software parallelism at component level, using simple meta-models of mathematical problems.

We present a theoretical analysis of the optoelectronic properties of type-ii GaAs1-xBix/GaNyAs1-y quantum wells (QWs) grown on GaAs substrates. We eludicate the broad scope for band structure engineering in these novel heterostructures, demonstrating that they offer emission and absorption out to mid-infrared wavelengths in structures which can be grown with little or no net strain relative to GaAs. We confirm our analysis by comparing to experiments on a prototype GaAs0.967Bi0.033/GaN0.062As0.938 structure, which show room temperature photoluminescence (PL) and absorption at a wavelength of 1.72 mu m (one of the longest achieved to date from a pseudomorphic GaAs-based heterostructure). Overall, we demonstrate that this new class of type-ii QWs has significant promise for (i) extending the wavelength range accessible to the GaAs material platform, and (ii) the development of long-wavelength photonic devices and highly efficient solar cells.

This work reports an overview about the contributions that photonics can add for the evolution of Data Centers, and it is pointed out how the combination of new photonic devices and optical communications can be considered as a valid recipe for high performance Data Center and their integration in the telecommunication network. In particular optical communication systems can satisfy all the aspects regarding the increasingly intelligent, low-latency and high-bandwidth connections among data centers. Furthermore, inside the data center rack, multiple processing cores are being integrated into a single photon-based chip to achieve higher processing power and energy consumption reduction.

The authors present and discuss the main results of a experimental campaign performed on a near full-scale semi-actively controlled steel building, in the framework of a research program financed by the Italian Department of Civil Protection. Four control algorithms have been investigated through shaking table tests under seven different natural earthquakes. They belong to the family of control algorithms based on a sound physical sense, where semi-active devices are typically seen as smart damping devices for which the amount of dissipation can be quickly regulated: usually they require less measurements, which often are made in the close surroundings of the device;therefore, the computational effort is fairly moderate and, in principle, it could be sustained by small, battery-powered computing systems. After a literature review on semi-active control algorithms, the paper first summarizes the logic behind the ones adopted in the tests. Then a direct comparison among them is done on the basis of the results gained from the tests. Each of the control logics has been evaluated and compared each other in terms of effectiveness in the reduction of interstorey drifts and of amount of dissipated energy, leading to comments may be useful for the design of a semiactive control strategy based on the use of such kind of variable devices.
