The dramatic increase in data and connectivity demand, in addition to heterogeneous device capabilities, poses a challenge for future wireless networks. One of the promising solutions is Device-to-Device (D2D) networking. D2D networking, advocating the idea of connecting two or more devices directly without traversing the core network, is promising to address the increasing data and connectivity demand. In this paper, we consider D2D networks, where devices with heterogeneous capabilities including computing power, energy limitations, and incentives participate in D2D activities heterogeneously. We develop (i) a device-aware routing and scheduling algorithm (DARS) by taking into account device capabilities, and (ii) a multi-hop D2D testbed using Android-based smartphones and tablets by exploiting Wi-Fi Direct and legacy Wi-Fi connections. We show that DARS significantly improves throughput in our testbed as compared to state-of-the-art.

The rapid development of distributed storage technology has attracted growing attention from both industry and academia. Although distributed system has been studied for many years, however, it is widely applied to engineering practice since the rise of cloud computing recently. Cloud storage constructs a storage resource pool with massive common storage devices through networks, which could be allocated to authorized users on demand. In this paper, we present a distributed business-aware storage execution environment towards large-scale applications. Initially, we present the overall of our proposed storage execution environment and different data delivery models according to corresponding business needs. Furthermore, we design a globally shared and cross-regional deployed metadata service to minimize the access delay of metadata. Finally, the approach presented in this paper has been validated to be effective through a series of evaluation experiments and actual use cases.

High quality Electrocardiogram (ECG) data is very important because this signal is generally used for the analysis of heart diseases. Wearable sensors are widely adopted for physical activity monitoring and for the provision of healthcare services, but noise always degrades the quality of these signals. This paper describes a new algorithm for ECG signal denoising, applicable in the contest of the real-time health monitoring using mobile devices, where the signal processing efficiency is a strict requirement. The proposed algorithm is computationally cheap because it belongs to the class of Infinite Impulse Response (iiR) noise reduction algorithms. The main contribution of the proposed scheme is that removes the noise's frequencies without the implementation of the Fast Fourier Transform that would require the use of special optimized libraries. It is composed by only few code lines and hence offers the possibility of implementation on mobile computing devices in an easy way. Moreover, the scheme allows the local denoising and hence a real time visualization of the denoised signal. Experiments on real datasets have been carried out in order to test the algorithm from accuracy and computational point of view.

Guaranteed numerical precision of each elementary step in a complex computation has been the mainstay of traditional computing systems for many years. This era, fueled by Moore's law and the constant exponential improvement in computing efficiency, is at its twilight from tiny nodes of the Internet-of-Things, to large HPC computing centers, subpicoJoule/operation energy efficiency is essential for practical realizations. To overcome the power wall, a shift from traditional computing paradigms is now mandatory. In this paper we present the driving motivations, roadmap, and expected impact of the European project OPRECOMP. OPRECOMP aims to (i) develop the first complete transprecision computing framework, (ii) apply it to a wide range of hardware platforms, from the sub-milliWatt up to the MegaWatt range, and (iii) demonstrate impact in a wide range of computational domains, spanning IoT, Big Data Analytics, Deep Learning, and HPC simulations. By combining together into a seamless design transprecision advances in devices, circuits, software tools, and algorithms, we expect to achieve major energy efficiency improvements, even when there is no freedom to relax end-to-end application quality of results. Indeed, OPRECOMP aims at demolishing the ultraconservative "precise" computing abstraction, replacing it with a more flexible and efficient one, namely transprecision computing.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) allows terminals to send tasks to adjacent edge servers for calculation to reduce the burden on terminals and task completion time. With the widespread use of wireless devices (WDs) and the increasing complexity of applications, how to partially offload tasks to minimize task completion time has become a huge challenge. We propose a sequenced quantization based on recurrent neural network (SQ-RNN) algorithm that makes reasonable partial offload decisions for subtasks with dependencies. Specifically, the SQ-RNN algorithm first inputs the environment information into the RNN, and uses the RNN to generate a task offloading strategy. Then the algorithm quantifies the offloading strategy generated by the RNN into multiple binary offloading actions according to a certain method, and selects the action with the lowest computational delay from the multiple binary offloading actions as the offloading decision of the task. In addition, the algorithm also configs RNN with a fixed-size memory space to store the latest unloading strategy generated by RNN for further training of RNN. Experiments have proved that the SQ-RNN offloading algorithm described in our study generates better offloading decisions than those made by conventional offloading techniques.

Controlling and programming quantum devices to process quantum information by the unit of qudit provides the possibilities for noise-resilient quantum communications, delicate quantum molecular simulations, and efficient quantum computations, showing great potential to enhance the capabilities of qubit-based quantum technologies. Here, we report a programmable high-dimensional quantum processor in a silicon-photonic in-tegrated circuit, which monolithically integrates all the key functionalities and capabilities of initialisation, manipulation, and measurement of the two quantum quart (ququart) states, and demonstrate its enhancement of quantum computational paral-lelism. By reprogramming the processor, we implemented the basic quantum Fourier transform algorithms, all in quaternary, to benchmark the enhancement of quantum parallelism using qudits. The monolithic integration and high programmability have allowed the implementations of more than one million high-fidelity preparations, operations and projections of qudit states in the processor. Our work shows an integrated photonic quantum technology for qudit-based quantum computing with enhanced capacity, accuracy, and efficiency, which could lead to the acceleration of building a large-scale Quantum computer. © 2022 IEEE.

To deliver better performance services to consumers, edge and cloud devices can be combined for mobile services. Edge servers can decrease computation delays by offering local computing services, whereas cloud servers can handle jobs that require a lot of processing power. When both edge and cloud servers are used together, it is possible to maximise computing resources while maintaining high Quality of Service (QoS). Edge-cloud computing business models rely on the ability to create effective collaboration between the edge and the cloud. This project develops a solid foundation for mobile edge-cloud computational networks that allows for effective resource exchange between the edge servers and the cloud server. Assign the administration of wholesale and buyback schemes to the edge servers and the determination of the wholesale price to the cloud server to maximise the utilisation of computing resources through the minimised computational delay. Then, using two techniques, proposed algorithms for optimising the computer resource sharing process. They are: (i) Zero profit exchange between the cloud server and the edge server. With the development of intelligent hardware technology, the heterogeneity of IoT devices in the edge and end layers, and diversity of application scenarios bring unprecedented challenges to the growth of IoT systems, mainly including a large amount of code be written for task construction in a cloud-edge-device collaborative environment, the inflexible configuration of offloading policies, and the high overhead in task scheduling/offloading. A dataflow based low-cost task orchestration and offloading platform, named as NBUFlow, is proposed to solve these problems. It is featured by defining tasks based on visualized dashboard of Node-RED to realize convenient and low-cost development of IoT systems, and multiple offload strategies of deployment and multitask parallel processing based on dataflow migration. The performance of the platform in terms of complete time of task deployment are verified through experiments. Results show that the completion time of task offloading can be reduced by three times compared with the container migration-based offloading method.

Usage patterns of mobile devices depend on a variety of factors such as time, location, and previous actions. Hence, context-awareness can be the key to make mobile systems to become personalized and situation dependent in managing their resources. We first reveal new findings from our own Android user experiment: (i) the launching probabilities of applications follow Zipf's law, and (ii) inter-running and running times of applications conform to log-normal distributions. We also find context-dependency in application usage patterns, for which we classify contexts in a personalized manner with unsupervised learning methods. Using the knowledge acquired, we develop a novel context-aware application scheduling framework, CAS that adaptively unloads and preloads background applications in a timely manner. Our trace-driven simulations with 96 user traces demonstrate the benefits of CAS over existing algorithms. We also verify the practicality of CAS by implementing it on the Android platform.

The goal of the extreme scale plasma turbulence studies described in this paper is to expedite the delivery of reliable predictions on confinement physics in large magnetic fusion systems by using world-class supercomputers to carry out simulations with unprecedented resolution and temporal duration. This has involved architecture-dependent optimizations of performance scaling and addressing code portability and energy issues, with the metrics for multi-platform comparisons being "time-to-solution" and "energy-to-solution". Realistic results addressing how confinement losses caused by plasma turbulence scale from present-day devices to the much larger $25 billion international ITER fusion facility have been enabled by innovative advances in the GTC-P code including (i) implementation of one-sided communication from MPI 3.0 standard;(ii) creative optimization techniques on Xeon Phi processors;and (iii) development of a novel performance model for the key kernels of the PIC code. Results show that modeling data movement is sufficient to predict performance on modern supercomputer platforms.
