The SPADnet FP7 European project is aimed at a new generation of fully digital, scalable and networked photonic components to enable large area image sensors, with primary target gamma-ray and coincidence detection in (Time-of-Flight) Positron Emission Tomography (PET). SPADnet relies on standard CMOS technology, therefore allowing for MRI compatibility. SPADnet innovates in several areas of PET systems, from optical coupling to single-photon sensor architectures, from intelligent ring networks to reconstruction algorithms. It is built around a natively digital, intelligent SPAD (Single-Photon Avalanche Diode)-based sensor device which comprises an array of 8x16 pixels, each composed of 4 mini-SiPMs with in situ time-to-digital conversion, a multi-ring network to filter, carry, and process data produced by the sensors at 2Gbps, and a 130nm CMOS process enabling mass-production of photonic modules that are optically interfaced to scintillator crystals. A few tens of sensor devices are tightly abutted on a single PCB to form a so-called sensor tile, thanks to TSV (Through Silicon Via) connections to their backside (replacing conventional wire bonding). The sensor tile is in turn interfaced to an FPGA-based PCB on its back. The resulting photonic module acts as an autonomous sensing and computing unit, individually detecting gamma photons as well as thermal and Compton events. It determines in real time basic information for each scintillation event, such as exact time of arrival, position and energy, and communicates it to its peers in the field of view. Coincidence detection does therefore occur directly in the ring itself, in a differed and distributed manner to ensure scalability. The selected true coincidence events are then collected by a snooper module, from which they are transferred to an external reconstruction computer using Gigabit Ethernet. We will detail the SPADnet core technologies as well as the latest project achievements in all project areas.

Mobile-edge computing (MEC) has become a popular research topic from both academia and industry since it can alleviate the computation and power limitations of mobile devices by offloading computation-intensive and energy-consuming tasks from mobile users to nearby edge servers for remote execution. Existing papers have studied related problems, however, none of them considers the reliability of MEC systems that may suffer soft errors during execution and bit errors during offloading. In this work, we study the task offloading and scheduling problem targeting to maximize the quality of experience (QoE) of multi-user MEC systems under a certain reliability requirement. We propose to decompose the original problem into i) a task offloading optimization problem, ii) a task-to-server assignment problem for ensuring system reliability constraint, and iii) a computing resource allocation problem for maximizing system QoE. To address these sub-problems, we first obtain the optimal offloading decision using the discrete particle swarm optimization method. We then propose a reliability-optimality analysis-based task assignment heuristic and a utility-optimal resource allocation algorithm. Simulation results show that our scheme outperforms two state-of-the-art approaches and two baseline methods. The average improvement on QoE (quantified by offloading utility) achieved by our scheme is up to 63.2% under reliability requirement.

The detection and recognition of targets within imagery and video analysis is vital for military and commercial applications. The development of infrared sensor devices for tactical aviation systems imagery has increased the performance of target detection. Due to the advancements of infrared sensors capabilities, their use for field operations such as visual operations (visops) or reconnaissance missions that take place in a variety of operational environments have become paramount. Many techniques implemented stretch back to 1970, but were limited due to computational power. The AI industry has recently been able to bridge the gap between traditional signal processing tools and machine learning. Current state of the art target detection and recognition algorithms are too bloated to be applied for on ground or aerial mission reconnaissance. Therefore, this paper proposes Edge IR Vision Transformer (EIR-ViT), a novel algorithm for automatic target detection utilizing infrared images that is lightweight and operates on the edge for easier deployability.

Early prediction and management of Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs) is an important health factor of Europe. Recent clinical trials have concluded that NIR sensing captures oxy(deoxy)haemoglobin (HbO2, Hb) and peripheral/ tissue oxygen saturations (StO2, SpO2), thermal Infrared-IR detects hyperthermia, among Regions of Interest (ROIs) and Mid-IR contains rich information about the proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics (e.g., glucose). Current medical approaches are i) invasive (e.g., skin lesion biopsy), ii) requires consumables, and iii) being operated by certified physicians. Our research aims at developing a non-invasive, reliable and cost-effective photonics-driven device for DFU monitoring and management which can be applied for wide use. Hyper-spectral image data are exploited for this purpose. Cost-effectiveness is achieved by introducing i) targeted photonics technologies for DFU, ii) implementing advanced signal processing/learning algorithms to increase the discrimination accuracy while maintaining hardware cost-benefit, (iii) developing a user-friendly framework operated by non-certified physicians, and even by patients, and (iv) minimizing operational cost with our non-invasive device.

The benefits introduced by novel network technologies such as 5G and beyond, including low latency and support for billions of devices, have the potential to transform the lives of people. However, the features promised by these new technologies have also attracted malicious actors, with various motivations for attacking the network infrastructure, from cybercrime-based frauds to political goals. Thus, to enable the full potential of the emerging network technologies, it is necessary to take into accounts these attacks and develop tailored countermeasures. One future direction in mitigating the risks of potential attacks is the automatic classification of malicious packets, with the possibility to drop them if classified in the attack category. Hence, in this context, we propose a solution based on Neural Networks (NNs) to automatically classify packets into two classes, i.e., benign and attack, directly in the Radio Access Network (RAN), specifically inspecting packets when they are relayed at the next generation eNB (gNB)-Central Unit (CU) level. Since NNs can be computationally intensive algorithms, potentially increasing the latency of the network, we decide to leverage photonic-Aware Neural Network (PANN), photonic accelerators able to perform NN computations in the analog optical domain and with time-of-flight latency. We devised two different PANN architectures, considering different photonic constraints. The classification performance of the two architectures has been assessed on the CICIDS-2017 dataset and compared with electronic counterparts. Results proved that the F1-score loss due to underlying hardware constraints is negligible, paving the way for PANN applications in next generation networks. © 2022 IEEE.

With the rapid development of technologies such as IoT and 5G, the Internet industry has undergone significant changes and posed new challenges to the traditional computing model. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is considered as an effective solution to the challenge. However, as mobile devices generally have limited computing power and battery storage to cope with the increasing latency-sensitive and computationally intensive tasks, how to allocate computation and communication resources in the edge cloud to improve the quality of service (QoS) for mobile users is a challenging research. In this paper, we first formulate the optimization model of multi-user offloading and transmitted power control, aiming to reduce the energy consumption, task delay and price cost of mobile devices in a multi-channel wireless interference environment. Then we propose a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on theoretical analysis of the model and design a multi-objective offloading strategy based on NSGA-ii. Our approach is able to obtain best trade-off among energy consumption, task delay and price. Experimental results on test instances shows the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Quantum computing operates in three stages: (i) preparation of the initial states of the n qubits of a register, (ii) step by step transformation of the state of this register by unitary operators which compose the quantum program, and (iii), measurement of all or some of the qubits of the register. The existence of quantum algorithms which are exponentially less complex than their classical counterparts for sonic classes of problems, stems from entangled states established by multi-qubit unitary operators within the quantum program. A register of it qubits is a quantum system composed of n quantum subsystems. The state \psi> of a quantum system composed of two quantum subsystems A and B is said to be entangled when \Psi> is not reducible to a pair composed of a state \Psi(A)> of A and a state \Psi(B)> of B: such situations have no counterpart in the classical world. In quantum theory, such a pair of states is denoted by a tensor product: \Psi> is entangled if it cannot be factorized into the tensor product \Psi(A)>circle times\Psi(B)>. This paper establishes conditions according to which it is possible to tell whether or not the state of a register of it qubits is entangled. The state of a single qubit is a vector a alpha\0> + beta\1> of unit norm in a 2-dimensional vector space, where \0> and \1> are the two basis states and where alpha and beta are complex amplitudes. Once considered a playground for hackers and malicious attacks, wireless networks are fast becoming more secure than their wired counterparts. Developments in micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and wireless networks are opening a new domain in networking history. Recent technological advances in wireless networking, IC fabrication and sensor technology have lead to the emergence of millimetre scale devices that collectively form a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and are radically changing the way in which we sense, process and transport signals of interest. They are increasingly become viable solutions to many challenging problems and will successively be deployed in many areas in the future such as in environmental monitoring, business, and military applications. The huge challenge in WSN is due to inherent resource and computing constraints. Because the sensor nodes are battery powered, increasing the autonomous lifetime of a WSN is a challenging optimization problem. However, deploying new technology, without security in mind has often proved to be unreasonably dangerous. There have been significant contributions to overcome many weaknesses in sensor networks like coverage problems, lack in power and making best use of limited network bandwidth, however;work in sensor network security is still in its infancy stage. The problem of securing these networks emerges more and more as a hot topic. Symmetric key cryptography is commonly seen as infeasible and public key cryptography has its own key distribution problem. The quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), as a hybrid quantum/classical algorithm, has received much interest recently. QAOA can also be viewed as a variational ansatz for quantum control. However, its direct application to emergent quantum technology encounters additional physical constraints: (i) the states of the quantum system are not observable;(ii) obtaining the derivatives of the objective function can be computationally expensive or even inaccessible in experiments, and (iii) the values of the objective function may be sensitive to various sources of uncertainty, as is the case for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Taking such constraints into account, we show that policy-gradient-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are well suited for optimizing the variational parameters of QAOA in a noise-robust fashion, opening up the way for developing RL techniques for continuous quantum control. This is advantageous to help mitigate and monitor the potentially unknown sources of errors in modern quantum simulators. We analyze the performance of the algorithm for quantum state transfer problems in single- and multi-qubit systems, subject to various sources of noise such as error terms in the Hamiltonian, or quantum uncertainty in the measurement process. We show that, in noisy setups, it is capable of outperforming state-of-the-art existing optimization algorithms.
