The rapid deployment of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices in smart environments such as smart campuses and cities necessitates robust Quality-of-Service (QoS) management across heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we extend the concept of Network Digital Twin (NDT) to networked IoT devices, presenting the Network Digital Twin Controller (NDTC) that enhances the functionality and performance of smart environ-ments. Our NDTC addresses key challenges by creating Digital Twins (DTs) of Physical Twins (PTs), synchronizing their states, and performing QoS-related what-if analyses. Specifically, we built a DT-enabled IoT-instrumented smart environment using an open-source Software-Defined Network (SDN) controller. We formulated and solved the state synchronization problem using our proposed Optimal Update (OU) and Gradient-driven Update (GU) algorithms, carefully adjusting the update frequency and data granularity to minimize DT/PT state deviation within given network bandwidth budgets. We also formulated and addressed the what-if analysis problem by selecting optimal what-if analyzers using our Optimal Selection (OS) algorithm for the most accurate QoS predictions under a given computing time budget. Our extensive experiments on a real testbed demonstrated the merits of our proposed solution: (i) our developed NDTC and algorithms meet the functional requirements, (ii) our OU and GU algorithms significantly reduce the state deviation between PTs and DTs, and (iii) our OS algorithm largely reduces the prediction errors of what-if analyses.

Computed Tomography (CT) is extensively used as a medical diagnostic tool, and increasingly for scientific and industrial research. In the wood industry, there is a growing interest in using the CT technique to assess the quality of logs entering a sawmill. Internal features of interest include knots, heartwood/sapwood boundary, rot and splits. Most commercially available CT scanning systems are modeled on medical designs and provide high spatial and density resolution. However, they are very complex and delicate devices and their cost is correspondingly high. So far, there is no commercially available CT scanner that can meet the extreme scanning speed requirement, moderate affordability and severe working environment in a sawmill. To address these challenges for using CT technology for industrial log scanning, a novel coarse-resolution cone-beam CT scanning system has been developed. To accommodate the modestly accurate log transport systems in sawmills and hence address the substantial associated lateral motions, an Eulerian approach is taken whereby the CT reconstruction is based on the moving log rather than on the fixed space traversed by the log. This paper, the first of a two-part report, describes a novel cone beam scanning concept, geometry-based coarse-resolution log models, customized CT data processing, normalization and efficient cone beam reconstruction algorithms. The second part of this report will describe the construction details and practical performance of a prototype device. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2014.

One of the problems responsible of power generation and transmission is the maintaining of an appropriate voltage profile by installation of reactive power supplies. In this paper, we propose a new technique for the optimal location and design of two kinds of Flexible AC Transmission System devices (FACTS) namely: Satitic Var Compensator (SVC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) handling the minimization of transmission losses in electrical network. Using the proposed scheme, the type, the location and the rating of FACTS devices are optimized simultaneously. The problem to solve is multi criteria under constraints related to the load flow equations, the voltages, the transformer turn ratios, the active and reactive productions and the compensation devices. Its resolution requires the employ of the advanced algorithms. Thus, we propose an approach based on the evolutionary algorithms (EA) to solve this problem multi criterion. It is about the NSGA-ii method (Ellitist Non Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm). The Pareto front is obtained for continuous, discrete and multiple of five MVArs of compensator devices for the IEEE 57-bus test system.

With the continuous development of integrated satellite ground networks, edge servers are laid out on low orbit earth (LEO) satellites to provide seamless services for some remote areas. In order to further improve service quality for mobile devices, the collaborative work between edge and cloud has received widespread attention. In this article, we consider the scenario of insufficient base station (BS) coverage in remote areas and investigate a hybrid model of computing offloading and resource allocation for edge cloud collaborative computing, in which edge servers with limited resources collaborate with the cloud by purchasing cloud computing resources. In this way, cloud server (CS) and edge servers separately price their computing and storage resources to stimulate each other to participate in cooperation and maximize their respective utility. We jointly optimize the size of offloading tasks, offloading strategies for devices and resource pricing issues for edge servers and CS based on comprehensive consideration of price cost, energy cost and latency limitation. A multi-level Stackelberg game is formulated among the CS (leader), BSs (followers) and satellites (followers) in level I-ii, the BSs (leaders), satellites (leaders) and IoT devices (followers) in level ii-iiI. Furthermore, we prove the existence and uniqueness of Stackelberg equilibrium (SE) in Stackelberg game. The SERI algorithm is proposed and simulations is conducted to show that SERI algorithm has good convergence performance and better entity utility.

Interference due to narrowband and broadband sources in mobile computing platforms have the capability to degrade overall wireless performance. Identification of these radio frequency interference (RFI) sources allows for mitigation and improved wireless performance. While shielding gives some immunity, interference sources operating within the same platform as sensitive radio receivers presents challenges far and above traditional electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of device integration. In this paper, bicoherence, a signal processing analysis algorithm, is used to identify the presence of high-speed interconnects in radiated platform emissions. This paper uses a practical example of RFI found in current wireless platforms and shows that detection is feasible in Gaussian and non-Gaussian additive noise environments.

In the last few years, Android mobile devices have encountered a large spread and nowadays a huge part of the traffic traversing the Internet is related to them. In parallel, the number of possible threats and attacks has also increased, thus emphasizing the need for accurate automatic malware detection systems. In this paper, we design and evaluate a system to detect whether a traffic object (biflow) is benign or malicious, possibly understanding its specific nature in the latter case. The proposal leverages machine learning in a hierarchical fashion, in order to capitalize on the structure of the traffic data and reap both design and performance benefits. The comparative evaluation—performed considering the public CICAndMal2017 dataset—assesses the performance of several machine-learning algorithms and witnesses that the hierarchical approach leads to improved performance w.r.t. the flat approach (up to +0.18 F1-score, depending on the granularity of the analysis and the machine learning algorithm considered). In addition, we evaluate the impact of a reject-option mechanism, showing the trade-off between classification accuracy and ratio of classified biflows.

Earables are embedded devices that can be placed in, on, or around the ear to sense human motions and physiological activities over an extended period of time. However, today's earable design principle heavily relies on dedicated sensors (e.g., accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor), which inevitably adds cost, weight, and power consumption to earable devices, constituting a critical bottleneck in their wide adoption. Moreover, the tight coupling of sensors with onboard microcontrollers makes existing earables difficult to program, raising the barrier of entry to earable *** this poster, we describe HeadFi ii, a stand-alone earable computing platform that integrates sensing and computing into a tiny hardware device with low power and computation footprint. We describe the design guideline and technical challenges as well as potential solutions. We believe this project would open up a new dimension of cutting-edge research and exciting educational opportunities. The developed solutions will lead to considerable advancements in both low-power hardware designs and efficient earable sensing algorithms, lowering the barrier of entry to earable computing by providing the research community with a versatile earable platform.

With the prospect of atomic-scale computing, we study cumulative energy profiles of spin-spin interactions in non-ferromagnetic lattices (Ising spin-glasses)-an established topic in solid-state physics that is now becoming relevant to atomic-scale EDA. Recent proposals suggest non-traditional computing devices based on nature's ability to find min-energy states. Spinto utilizes EDA-inspired high-performance algorithms to (i) simulate natural energy minimization in spin systems and (ii) study its potential for solving hard computational problems. Unlike previous work, our algorithms are not limited to planar Ising topologies. In one CPU-day, our branch-and-bound algorithm finds min-energy (ground) states on 100 spins, while our local search approximates ground states on 1, 000, 000 spins. We use this computational tool to study the significance of hyper-couplings in the context of recently implemented adiabatic quantum computers.

Fog computing promises to enable machine learning tasks to scale to large amounts of data by distributing processing across connected devices. Two key challenges to achieving this are (i) heterogeneity in devices' compute resources and (ii) topology constraints on which devices can communicate. We are the first to address these challenges by developing a network-aware distributed learning optimization methodology where devices process data for a task locally and send their learnt parameters to a server for aggregation at certain time intervals. Unlike traditional federated learning frameworks, our method enables devices to offload their data processing tasks, with these decisions determined through a convex data transfer optimization problem that trades off costs associated with devices processing, offloading, and discarding data points. We analytically characterize the optimal data transfer solution for different fog network topologies, showing for example that the value of a device offloading is approximately linear in the range of computing costs in the network. Our subsequent experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets we collect confirm that our algorithms are able to improve network resource utilization substantially without sacrificing the accuracy of the learned model.

The alluring benefits of Mobile Cloud computing have attracted many mobile device users. The moving property of the mobile devices can serve as the boon to its user but curse for its developers. The moving devices cause the problems of the link faults, less available resources and unreliable dynamic networking conditions. The link failure of the nodes in the changing network decreases the performance of the network. Many multipath routing algorithms have been constructed so far to provide the stable paths but fails in recovery of the left-out node from network. A novel weight based approach has been proposed to detect the failed node and discover the alternate node to provide the seamless services. The approach works upon taking two parameters of working nodes (i) failure rate (ii) execution time. A master node is selected and its parameters are stated as Threshold values. The alternate node is selected by comparing the values with threshold values.
