We analyze crosstalk-free widesense nonblocking multicast multi-log networks. Widesense nonblocking strikes a balance between strictly nonblocking and rearrangeably non- blocking both in terms of cost-effectiveness and route establishment efficiency. The problem is important as cost-effective and efficient crosstalk-free multicast photonic switching networks are likely to play an important role at the optical Internet core in the future. Particularly, for the first time in the literature we derive conditions for the d-ary multi-log network to be crosstalk-free multicast widesense nonblocking under the window algorithm for any given window size. Several interesting by-products follow from our approach and result. Firstly, our result allows for computing the best window size minimizing the fabric cost, showing that the multi-log network is a very good candidate for crosstalk-free multicast switching architectures. Secondly, our analytical approach - partly based on applying the celebrated Konig-Egevary theorem - also gives a much simpler proof of the known case when the network is not required to be crosstalk-free. Thirdly, for window sizes of 1 and d n , we re-discovered known results for the multi-log multicast networks under the so-called fanout constraints.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications have emerged as a critical component in improving people’s quality of life. The increasing volume of data generated by IoT devices, on the other hand, places a strain on the resources of traditional cloud data centres. This makes cloud data centres unable to meet the demands of IoT applications. Due to resource constraints and the massive connectivity of IoT devices, efficient task (incoming request) allocation is critical for service providers. We create a novel processing power-based task scheduling technique that employs a broker manager to distribute tasks and the process strategy across multiple devices. This is important in cloud technology because it enables organisations to effectively scale their processes. We use multithreading to parallelize processes and evaluate the performance of the proposed model using existing task allocation algorithms (i) round-robin, (ii) weighted round-robin, (iii) random allocation, (iv) genetic algorithm, and (v) dynamic algorithm. Our results show that when there are few tasks and one cluster has more processing capacity than the others, a weighted round-robin algorithm works well. The effectiveness of allocating based on weight shows no improvement in task completion time as task size increases. Using our proposed model, we show that the dynamic algorithm outperforms all other algorithms for task scheduling by 1.37 times for all task sizes.

A common problem that medical practitioners experience is the inability to successfully locate a vein for intravenous access procedures. Currently, there are several methods that can allow for increased venous visibility. However, these are expensive processes that involve infrared detectors and high-end processing capabilities. The system proposed can successfully make a clear image of a vein using low-cost, nearinfrared LEDs and photographs taken with a smartphone. The near-infrared lights, when under the correct specifications, will highlight the location of a vein described by the principles of vein transillumination. By applying edge-finding algorithms and contrast differentiation, a clear image and relative location of a vein can be produced to aid practitioners. As a result, low cost materials can capture and process an image of a vein and return the vein location. These results can be applied to current research to create medical devices that aid practitioners in locating a vein and completing intravenous procedures. © 2016 IEEE.

The importance of IoT analytics in smart deploy-ments has resulted in an increased use of powerful Deep Neural Network (DNN) models to extract insights from the growing amount of IoT sensor data. Traditional approaches that entirely offload computation and model deployment to cloud servers have been shown to be inefficient due to network congestion and latency concerns. However, with the improved capabilities of IoT devices, it has now become possible to distribute and host DNNs across IoT devices, edge servers and the cloud. In this paper, we propose a multi-user system, called T2C, to dynamically choose, deploy, monitor and control DNN-driven IoT analytics in a thing-to-cloud continuum. T2C leverages strategies such as multi-task learning, hitchhiking, early exit, and dynamic reconfiguration, to maximize the number of served user requests while simultaneously satisfying accuracy and latency requirements. We propose a suite of deployment planning and reconfiguration algorithms to dynamically deploy and migrate DNN layers between IoT devices, edge servers, and the cloud. We implement T2C in a prototype testbed and show that our system: (i) achieves 6.8X throughput boost compared to baseline algorithms in the planning phase, and (ii) improves the satisfied ratio by up to 35% in the operation and reconfiguration phase.

The popularity of 4K videos is on the rise. However, streaming such high-quality videos over mm Wave to several users presents significant challenges due to directional communication, fluctuating channels, and high bandwidth demands. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative 4K layered video multicast streaming system. We (i) develop a video quality model tailored for layered video coding, (ii) optimize resource allocation, scheduling, and beamforming based on the channel conditions of different users, and (iii) design a streaming strategy that integrates fountain code to eliminate redundancy in multicast groups, coupled with a Leaky-Bucket approach for congestion control. We implement our system on Commodity-Off- The-Shelf (COTS) WiGig devices and demonstrate its effectiveness through comprehensive testbed and emulation experiments.

Summary form only given. Quantum Phase Estimation (PE) is a fundamental building block in the framework of Quantum computing. Accurate estimation of the true eigenphase φ 0 of a known eigenstate |φ〉 is fundamental for the implementation of many promising quantum algorithms. The interest in PE is also due to the modest quantum hardware requirements of the Iterative Phase Estimation Algorithm (IPEA) implementation [1], successfully implemented on small-scale devices [2]. However, IPEA makes hard decisions at each step of the algorithm, relying on majority voting schemes for its robustness against noise. It has been observed how non-error-corrected machines may enter a regime where error-rates for IPEA diverge quickly, making this approach impractical [3]. New Bayesian approaches, such as the Rejection Filtering Phase Estimation (RFPE), have been recently proposed to overcome these limitations [4]. Here, we report the implementation of RFPE in a photonic device embedding state-of-art integrated elements. Spontaneous Four Wave Mixing sources generate photon pairs. State preparation and evolution are accomplished via integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometers and thermo-optical phase shifters operating in the hundreds of kHz regime. Fast reconfigurability is key for RFPE, as the algorithm adaptively chooses the parameters for each experiment. Arbitrary CU(2) controlled operations are made possible by an entanglement-based scheme, integrated on this chip for the first time.

In this paper we address the high-level synthesis of multiple word-length DSP algorithms over programmable devices (FPGAs). Previous approaches tend to simplify the set of resources, thus alleviating the complexity of the high-level synthesis, but leading to non-optimal solutions. Here, we present a high-level synthesis framework that overcomes these limitations by means of considering: (i) both logic-based and embedded multipliers, (ii) both constant and generic multipliers and (iii) variable latency resources. A simulated annealing based approach for the combined scheduling, resource allocation and binding tasks is presented. When compared to previous approaches, area improvements of up to 60% are reported

Multimedia streaming applications with stringent QoS requirements in 60GHz mmWave wireless personal area networks (WPANs) demand high rate and low latency data transfer as well as low service disruption. In this paper, we consider the problem of robust relay placement in 60GHz WPANs. Relays forward traffic from transmitter devices to receiver devices facilitating i) the primary communication path for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transceiver pairs, and ii) secondary (backup) communication path for line-of-sight (LOS) transceiver pairs. We formulate the robust minimum relay placement problem and the robust maximum utility relay placement problem with the objective to minimize the number of relays deployed and maximize the network utility, respectively. Efficient algorithms are developed to solve both problems and have been shown to incur less service disruption in presence of moving subjects that may block the LOS paths in the environment.

This paper explores the advantages of adding an MMX extension to the MicroBlaze (MB) soft processor,through its FSL ports. The implemented MMX unit is described in detail, were emphasis has been done in parallelizing the instruction execution. The propagation delays and FPGA resources consumed obtained for the different blocks during the synthesis phase for a Virtex-ii target device are also shown. The structure of the peripheral itself, built by merging the MMX extension with a finite state machine and some additional glue logic is also described. In particular,attention is centered in the idea of using of a local micro-program memory which avoids the continuous transfer of codes to the peripheral. Finally, the method used to evaluate and compare the MB performance in calculating three well different algorithms with and without using the MMX extension, is also presented and discussed.

The progress in quantum information theory and the advances in the manipulation and control of quantum systems promise the advent of an era where quantum technologies will significantly change the fields of communication, computation and sensors. Even though some of these new technologies have already been successfully implemented, such as quantum key distribution [1] and quantum clocks [2], to fully develop the potential of these technologies we need to find new compact, reliable and robust quantum systems. In particular, we need to be able to control and process the elusive and delicate features of quantum entangled states, which are at the core of quantum technologies. In this sense, quantum photonics arises as one mature technology where most of the quantum information building blocks have been demonstrated. Most of the achievements in quantum photonics are hindered by the same limitations as the classical processing of light: weak interactions with matter, which impede efficient nonlinear processes, and large devices with dimensions many times the wavelength of light. Plasmonic devices may hold the key to overcome these hurdles due to strong interaction with light, small volumes of interaction, and the possibility to engineer and fabricate suitable nanostructures to address particular tasks [3].Here we present our progress on the control of quantum entanglement of photonic states with a single plasmonic nanostructure, smaller than the wavelength of the involved modes. In particular, by using modes of light matching the symmetries of the nanostructure, we present experimental evidence that we can control the interaction of entangled states with single nanostructures. Our structure consists of a single circular aperture on a thin gold film. The diameter of the aperture is 750±10nm.
