Quantum computers are able to operate on coherent superpositions of states, and to isolate a single global property of the set of computed quantities via interference. In principle, this permits them to solve certain problems exponentially faster than a classical computer, but no one has yet succeeded in implementing a true quantum computer on more than two quantum bits. Recently, however, it has been found that an ensemble of independent and identical quantum computers can perform most of the same feats that a single quantum computer could, while at the same time bringing massive classical parallelism to bear on its computations. Such an ensemble quantum computer can be realized, to a limited extent, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy on ordinary liquids at room temperature and pressure. This simple implementation depends on special kinds of mixed states, called pseudo-pure states, whose preparation entails a loss of signal that is exponential in the number of spins. While this would appear to limit such an implementation to ca. 8-10 spins in the foreseeable future, NMR spectroscopy has now permitted the first experimental demonstrations of all the basic features of quantum computing. We claim, moreover, that the product operator formalism, on which the theory of NMR spectroscopy is based, provides an efficient framework within which to analyze algorithms and decoherence effects in quantum computing more generally. This is illustrated by presenting our recent experimental implementation of a quantum error correcting code.

Historically, optical device size has been limited by diffraction. Today's photonic devices are composed of dielectric materials with modest dielectric constants, and are much bigger than the smallest electronic devices for this reason. However subwavelength spatial confinement of light at dimensions down to less than 10% of the free-space wavelength is possible using plasmonic components. Ultimately it may be possible to employ plasmonic components to form the building blocks of a chip-based optical device technology that is scaleable to molecular dimensions, with potential imaging, spectroscopy and interconnection applications in computing, communication and chemical/biological detection. In this talk we will describe recent opportunities presented by plasmonics for chip-scale integration of photonic and electronic devices, including i)design of metal-insulator-metal plasmon waveguides that optimize the trade-off between mode localization and propagation loss in the visible and near-infrared ii) on-chip Si CMOS compatible light near-infrared light sources for coupling into plasmonic networks iii) plasmon-enhanced emission from quantum dots, and iv) opportunities for active plasmonic devices based on electro-optic and all-optical modulation of plasmon propagation.

This research explores architectures and design principles for monolithic optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) through the implementation of an optical multi-token-ring network testbed system. Monolithic smart pixel CMOS OEICs are of paramount importance to high performance networks, communication switches, computer interfaces, and parallel signal processing for demanding future multimedia applications. The general testbed system is called Reconfigurable Translucent Smart Pixel Array (R-Transpar) and includes a field programmable gate array (FPGA), a transimpedance receiver array, and an optoelectronic very large-scale integrated (OE-VLSI) smart pixel array. The FPGA is an Altera FLEX10K100E chip that performs logic functions and receives inputs from the transimpedance receiver array. A monolithic (OE-VLSI) smart pixel device containing an array of 4 x 4 vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) spatially interlaced with an array of 4 x 4 metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) detectors connects to these devices and performs optical input-output functions. These components are mounted on a printed circuit board for testing and evaluation of integrated monolithic OEIC designs and various optical interconnection techniques. The system moves information between nodes by transferring 3-D optical packets in free space or through fiber image guides. The R-Transpar system is reconfigurable to test different network protocols and signal processing functions. In its operation as a 3-D multi-token-ring network, we use a specific version of the system called Transpar-Token-Ring (Transpar-TR) that uses novel time-division multiplexed (TDM) network node addressing to enhance channel utilization and throughput. Host computers interface with the system via a high-speed digital I/O board that sends commands for networking and application algorithm operations. We describe the system operation and experimental results in detail.

There is an increasing interest in using logic programming to specify and implement distributed algorithms, including a variety of network applications. These are applications where data and computation are distributed among several devices and where, in principle, all the devices can exchange data and share the computational results of the group. In this paper we propose a declarative approach to distributed computing whereby distributed algorithms and communication models can be (i) specified as action theories of fluents and actions;(ii) executed as collections of distributed state machines, where devices are abstracted as (input/output) automata that can exchange messages;and (iii) analysed using existing results on connecting causal theories and Answer Set Programming. Results on the application of our approach to different classes of network protocols are also presented.

An overmoded photonic crystal waveguide based on the three-dimensional woodpile lattice has been proposed for a high-energy charged particle accelerator. Critical to overall accelerator efficiency is the ability to couple power into an uninterrupted vacuum waveguide in a very small volume. We present designs and simulations of coupling to the waveguide, both from free space and from a waveguide adjoining it at 90 degrees. We discuss details of the computation, including the use of symmetries and extraction of the resulting transmission.

Edge computing is an emerging technology that can help huge number of devices be connected and processed with low latency. However, the performance of edge servers is far less powerful than cloud servers. When dealing with a large number of job requests from user devices, traditional job scheduling methods are not efficient enough. In this paper, we propose a new job scheduling model by considering adaptable jobs that can be executed with different computing levels and accordingly different resource requirements. We design a new job scheduling algorithm based on such an adaptable job model. The algorithm can choose an appropriate level for each job according to resource availability. Compared with existing works, our design can achieve better tradeoff between resource utilization and quality of experience. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that considers adaptable job computing levels.

At this time, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used in many fields. This kind of network has some attractive features that have promoted their use, such as the absence of wires and the use of low-cost devices. However, WSNs also have important shortcomings that affect some features like energy cost and quality of service. In this paper, we optimize traditional static WSNs (a set of sensors and a sink node) by means of adding routers to simultaneously optimize a couple of important factors: energy consumption and average coverage. This multiobjective optimization problem was solved in a previous work using two genetic algorithms (NSGA-ii and SPEA2) which had an important limitation: the computing time was very high and then, to address complex instances was difficult. In this paper, both algorithms are parallelized using OpenMP in order to reduce the computing time, and a more realistic data set is included. The results obtained are analyzed in depth from both multiobjective and parallel viewpoints. A Quite good efficiency is obtained with a wide range of processing cores, observing that NSGA-ii provides the best results in small and medium instances, but in the largest ones the behavior of both algorithms is similar.

Current radio frequency (RF) sensors at the Edge lack the computational resources to support practical, in-situ training for intelligent spectrum monitoring. This is true for sensor data classification in general. We propose a solution via Deep Delay Loop Reservoir computing (DLR), a processing architecture that supports general machine learning algorithms on compact mobile devices by leveraging delay-loop reservoir computing in combination with innovative electro-optical hardware. With both digital and photonic realizations of our design of the loops, DLR delivers reductions in form factor, hardware complexity and latency, compared to the State-of-the-Art (SoA). The main impact of the reservoir is to project the input data into a higher dimensional space of reservoir state vectors in order to linearly separate the input classes. Once the classes are well separated, traditionally complex, power-hungry classification models are no longer needed for the learning process. Yet, even with simple classifiers based on Ridge regression (RR), the complexity grows at least quadratically with the input size. Hence, the hardware reduction required for training on compact devices is in contradiction with the large dimension of state vectors. DLR employs a RR-based classifier to exceed the SoA accuracy, while further reducing power consumption by leveraging the architecture of parallel (split) loops. We present DLR architectures composed of multiple smaller loops whose state vectors are linearly combined to create a lower dimensional input into Ridge regression. We demonstrate the advantages of using DLR for two distinct applications: RF Specific Emitter Identification (SEI) for IoT authentication, and wireless protocol recognition for IoT situational awareness.

In recent decades, sequencing techniques have undergone rapid development, leading to a significant reduction in costs. Concurrently, the popularity of personalized medicine and portable devices has surged. These advancements have precipitated an exponential increase in genomic data volume, posing formidable challenges in terms of storage and transmission. Compression emerges as a viable solution to address these challenges. To date, the bulk of research within this domain has concentrated on refining compression algorithms. However, investigations into hardware acceleration of these algorithms have been scant, primarily focusing on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) or Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Given the prevalence of multiprocessor system-on-chips (MPSoCs) in portable devices, there is a pressing need to design algorithms that can leverage computing resources effectively, enhancing both performance and energy efficiency, which are crucial for portable devices. To address these challenges, our study introduces a novel heterogeneous compression algorithm that significantly advances the performance and energy efficiency of genomic data processing on mobile devices. By implementing a dual-stage pipeline approach for Gzip and leveraging both OpenCL and OpenMP, our framework optimally utilizes the disparate computational resources of MPSoCs. The empirical results underscore a robust performance enhancement, achieving an average increase of 15.7% in data processing speed to conventional CPU-based methods. This substantial leap in efficiency alleviates the computational burdens typically associated with mobile genomic applications.

The search for a reliable, low-cost, general-application modeling tool has been assuming a growing importance among integrated optics theoreticians. For example, finite-difference (FD) based algorithms have given rise to commercial photonic CAD software programs that are less expensive, from both financial and computational points of view, than finite-elements (FEM) based ones. On the other hand, the former show some computational drawbacks that do not permit to consider them as of truly general application, while the latter provide extremely reliable modeling tools. Recently, a few numerical techniques (alternative to both FD and FEM methods) have been proposed, mainly in view of an improvement in flexibility and a reduction in computational cost. In particular, methods based on the Galerkin approach and Krylov reduction have proven particularly effective for the solution of the Helmholtz equation in a very wide class of integrated optical structures. Moreover, these methods are very promising from the point of view of reliability and are computationally non-expensive. Here, we present the implementation of one of such numerical techniques, the so-called Arnoldi-Galerkin method, together with that of a home-made FEM software program. A comparison with the results from other algorithm is shown as well.
