Earables are embedded devices that can be placed in, on, or around the ear to sense human motions and physiological activities over an extended period of time. However, today's earable design principle heavily relies on dedicated sensors (e.g., accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor), which inevitably adds cost, weight, and power consumption to earable devices, constituting a critical bottleneck in their wide adoption. Moreover, the tight coupling of sensors with onboard microcontrollers makes existing earables difficult to program, raising the barrier of entry to earable computing. In this poster, we describe HeadFi ii, a stand-alone earable computing platform that integrates sensing and computing into a tiny hardware device with low power and computation footprint. We describe the design guideline and technical challenges as well as potential solutions. We believe this project would open up a new dimension of cutting-edge research and exciting educational opportunities. The developed solutions will lead to considerable advancements in both low-power hardware designs and efficient earable sensing algorithms, lowering the barrier of entry to earable computing by providing the research community with a versatile earable platform.

Currently, robots are increasingly being used in every industry. One of the most high-tech areas is creation of completely autonomous robotic devices including vehicles. The results of various global research prove the efficiency of vision systems in autonomous robotic devices. However, the use of these systems is limited because of the computational and energy resources available in the robot device. The paper describes the results of applying the original approach for image processing on reconfigurable computing environments by the example of morphological operations over grayscale images. This approach is prospective for realizing complex image processing algorithms and real-time image analysis in autonomous robotic devices.

There is much debate on whether quantum computing on current NISQ devices, consisting of noisy hundred qubits and requiring a non-negligible usage of classical computing as part of the algorithms, has utility and will ever offer advantages for scientific and industrial applications with respect to traditional computing. In this position paper, we argue that while real-world NISQ quantum applications have yet to surpass their classical counterparts, strategic approaches can be used to facilitate advancements in both industrial and scientific applications. We have identified three key strategies to guide NISQ computing towards practical and useful implementations. Firstly, prioritizing the identification of a "killer app" is a key point. An application demonstrating the distinctive capabilities of NISQ devices can catalyze broader development. We suggest focusing on applications that are inherently quantum, e.g., pointing towards quantum chemistry and material science as promising domains. These fields hold the potential to exhibit benefits, setting benchmarks for other applications to follow. Secondly, integrating AI and deep-learning methods into NISQ computing is a promising approach. Examples such as quantum Physics-Informed Neural Networks and Differentiable Quantum Circuits (DQC) demonstrate the synergy between quantum computing and AI. Lastly, recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of NISQ computing, we advocate for a co-design approach. Achieving synergy between classical and quantum computing necessitates an effort in co-designing quantum applications, algorithms, and programming environments, and the integration of HPC with quantum hardware. The interoperability of these components is crucial for enabling the full potential of NISQ computing. In conclusion, through the usage of these three approaches, we argue that NISQ computing can surpass current limitations and evolve into a valuable tool for scientific and industrial applications. In the era of rapidly expanding image data, the demand for improved image compression algorithms has grown significantly, particularly with the integration of deep learning approaches into traditional image processing tasks. However, many of the existing solutions in this domain are burdened by computational complexity, rendering them unsuitable for real-time deployment on standard devices as they often necessitate complex systems and substantial energy consumption. This work addresses the growing paradigm of edge computing for real-time applications by introducing a novel, on-edge device solution. This innovative approach aims to strike a balance between efficiency and accuracy, adhering to the practical constraints of real-world deployment. By presenting demonstrations of the proposed solution's performance on readily available devices, we provide tangible evidence of its applicability and viability in real-world scenarios. This advance contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the need for accessible and efficient image compression algorithms that can be deployed real-time applications on edge devices, bridging the gap between the demanding computational requirements of deep learning and the practical limitations of everyday hardware. As data continues to surge, solutions like this become ever more critical in ensuring effective image compression, aligning with on-edge computing within AI. This research paves the way for improved image processing in real-time applications while conserving computational resources and energy consumption.

Edge computing is a paradigm for improving the performance of cloud computing systems by performing data processing at the edge of the network, closer to the users and sources of data. As data processing is traditionally done in large data centers, typically located far from their users, the edge computing paradigm will reduce the communication bottleneck between the user and the location of data processing, thereby improving overall performance. This becomes more important as the number of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and other mobile or embedded devices continues to increase. In this paper, we investigate the use of distributed constraint reasoning (DCR) techniques to model and solve the distributed load balancing problem in edge computing problems. Specifically, we (i) provide a mapping of the distributed load balancing problem in edge computing to a distributed constraint satisfaction and optimization problem;(ii) propose two DCR algorithms to solve such problems;and (iii) empirically evaluate our algorithms against a state-of-the-art DCR algorithm on random and scale-free networks.

In the present paper, we have analyzed nonlinear harmonic response in microwave, photonic devices, and waveguides, applications. Based on Frobenius power series expansions, a special software has been cast and applied with very small truncation error (less than 10-8). Four basic sets of nonlinear harmonic response systems have been processed: i) New algorithms for computing twelve Jacobian elliptic functions are built on the basis of transformation of Jacobian elliptic integrals to nonlinear differential equations of second order, where each function has its generating recurrence formula., ii) Self-trapping (paraxial propagation) in W-shaped refractive index fibers are parametrically investigated, iii) Implementation of the Frobenius method for the numerical solution of initial value problems involving second order nonlinear differential equations with or without arbitrary forced functions under the forms: (Equation presented) are discussed, where α, β, and γ are physical parameters;both m and n are positive solid integers, and f(t) is an arbitrary exciting function, and finally iv) waveguides and multiplexers. A novel software program has been designed and processed to handle the above problems.

In the era of viruses and hackers targeting high-tech information transported across the Internet, security is becoming a paramount goal. A cryptographic system is a method of hiding information where only the person owning the related secret key can open it. There are several types of cryptography algorithms that differ from each other in security complexity, the size of key and words operated on, and the processing time. We analyse the development of a light and relatively fast hardware implementation of the Extended Tiny Encryption Algorithm (XTEA). This paper presents a hardware accelerated XTEA Encryption-Decryption system based on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) logic devices, namely the Altera Cyclone-V FPGA assisted with a NIOS ii soft-core basic processor. The NIOS ii processor behaved as a software execution platform, while the FPGA hardware approach synthesised the XTEA algorithm using VHDL code. In addition, a co-design approach is considered where the NIOS ii processor co-processed with the XTEA Hardware accelerator module is tested in practice. A throughput of over 113 Mb/s is reached and an 26x speedup was recorded in regard to the soft processor implementation. In addition, hardware replication of the basic XTEA circuit has been shown to be a realistic method to increase the throughput to an even much higher rate.
