Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks are very attractive with applying development of arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) N x N multiplexers. This AWG multiplexer device plays an important role in WDM networks because of its unique N input and N output geometry. We design and analyze an integrated 32x32 arrayed waveguide grating wavelength switch based on SOI waveguides. We demonstrate three application of 32x32 arrayed waveguide grating, such as: Multiplexing/Demultiplexing, Optical add/drop multiplexing (OADM) and wavelength switch. The 32x32 arrayed waveguide grating is designed with including phase modulator. The simulation result and working principle for output channel wavelength shift is matched. In order to improve AWG switch, we integrate AWG switch and multimode interference (MMI). AWG with MMI switch coupler was connected at the end of the input waveguide. Beam propagation method with FDTD method are utilized for simulation works. The deviation of crosstalk and insertion loss value is small, and specifically the crosstalk is lower than -30 dB.

High-speed optical synchronization signal generation high speed computer is very important. The rational harmonic (RH) modelocking scheme is a useful technology to generate pulses at a repetition rate higher than the modulation frequency. In this paper, we design an amplitude modulated mode-locked figure eight fiber laser as a 50 GHz: optical pulse. In the cavity of high speed laser source, we utilize an amplitude modulator and phase modulator to inject additive modulation signal respectively. The modulation signal can let the longitudinal mode in cavity produce constructive interference, and then, achieve small modulation signal to excite harmonic and rational mode-locked laser in high repetition rate. The pulsewidth is 13.1ps with feeding a 16.4dBm, 12.5002248GHz modulation signal to the amplitude modulator. The pulsewidth, rise time and falling time of the 50GHz optical pulse are adjustable under experimental verification. In optical transmission systems, we consider the 50GHz optical pulse used in the optical interconnection transmission analysis.

In this paper we address the high-level synthesis of multiple word-length DSP algorithms over programmable devices (FPGAs). Previous approaches tend to simplify the set of resources, thus alleviating the complexity of the high-level synthesis, but leading to non-optimal solutions. Here, we present a high-level synthesis framework that overcomes these limitations by means of considering: (i) both logic-based and embedded multipliers, (ii) both constant and generic multipliers and (iii) variable latency resources. A simulated annealing based approach for the combined scheduling, resource allocation and binding tasks is presented. When compared to previous approaches, area improvements of up to 60% are reported

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) 'approach is now widely used to sinuilate the expected performance of photonic crystal, plasmonic, and other nanophotonic devices. Unfortunately. given the computational demands of full 3-D simulations. researchers can seldom bring this modeling tool to bear on more than a few, isolated design points. Thus 3-D FDTD-as it stands now-is merely a verification rather than a design optimization tool. Over the long term, continuing improvements in available computing power can be expected to bring structures of current interest within general reach. In the meanwhile, however, many researchers appear to he exploring alternative modeling techniques, trading off flexibility of approach in return for more rapid turnaround on the devices of specific interest to them. In contrast we are trying to improve the efficiency of 3-D FDTD by reducing its computational expense without sacrificing accuracy. We believe that these two approaches are completely complementary because even with vast amonnts of computational power, any real-world system will still require a modular approach to modeling spanning from the nanometer to the millimeter scale or beyond.

Historically, optical device size has been limited by diffraction. Today's photonic devices are composed of dielectric materials with modest dielectric constants, and are much bigger than the smallest electronic devices for this reason. However subwavelength spatial confinement of light at dimensions down to less than 10% of the free-space wavelength is possible using plasmonic components. Ultimately it may be possible to employ plasmonic components to form the building blocks of a chip-based optical device technology that is scaleable to molecular dimensions, with potential imaging, spectroscopy and interconnection applications in computing, communication and chemical/biological detection. In this talk we will describe recent opportunities presented by plasmonics for chip-scale integration of photonic and electronic devices, including i)design of metal-insulator-metal plasmon waveguides that optimize the trade-off between mode localization and propagation loss in the visible and near-infrared ii) on-chip Si CMOS compatible light near-infrared light sources for coupling into plasmonic networks iii) plasmon-enhanced emission from quantum dots, and iv) opportunities for active plasmonic devices based on electro-optic and all-optical modulation of plasmon propagation.

In quantum information and quantum computing, the carrier of information is some quantum system and information is encoded in its state. After processing the state in the quantum processor, the information has to be read out. Clearly, this task is equivalent to determining the final state of the system. We begin by briefly reviewing various possible state discrimination strategies that are optimal with respect to some reasonable criteria and report on recent advances in the unambiguous discrimination of mixed quantum states. This strategy has been successfully applied to devise a class of novel probabilistic quantum algorithms and has been demonstrated experimentally, using a linear optical implementation via generalized interferometers. In the second part we present a scheme for communication via completely unknown quantum states. In this context we discuss programmable quantum state discriminators that are universal, i.e. perform optimally on average, independently of the actual states used for the communication scheme. We conclude with a discussion of possible experimental implementations of the proposed device.

One of the major purposes of National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is to accurately focus 192 high energy laser beams on a nanoscale (mm) fusion target at the precise location and time. The automatic alignment system developed for NIF is used to align the beams in order to achieve the required focusing effect. However, if a distorted image is inadvertently created by a faulty camera shutter or some other opto-mechanical malfunction, the resulting image termed "off-normal" must be detected and rejected before further alignment processing occurs. Thus the off-normal processor acts as a preprocessor to automatic alignment image processing. In this work, we discuss the development of an "off-normal" pre-processor capable of rapidly detecting the off-normal images and performing the rejection. Wide variety of off-normal images for each loop is used to develop the criterion for rejections accurately.

A specific case of a multi-phonon non-collinear light scattering in optically uniaxial media is presented. Compared to our previous studies, an innovation lies in the fact that now we consider passing just the quartet of incident light beams through a single crystal that is perturbed by the triplet of coherent acoustic waves. The exact and closed analytical model for describing this strongly nonlinear phenomenon is developed. In fact, specially designed regime of a four-order light scattering whit direct coupling of all the light modes, when transitions of four input light beams into four output light modes are allowed and electronically controlled, is examined. The feasibility of applying such an effect to an all-optical computing and performing an all-optical adder is analyzed.

In order to meet the demand for miniaturization and excellent performances of antennas to send and receive the wireless signals, in this paper a novel photonic Band Gap (PBG) structure of a two-dimensional square lattice array etched on one side of silicon wafer is proposed as the grounds of a microstrip patch antenna. An analysis of the performance of a patch antenna with a PBG ground has been carried out, then two rectangle MEMS microstrip antennas with a conventional and a PBG ground respectively, are designed, while the alternating direction implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI-FDTD) is adopted to perform time simulations of Gaussian pulse propagation in the microstrip antennas, as a result of the versatile method, the frequency-dependent scattering parameters and input impedance could be derived. An important reduction of the surface waves in the PBG antenna has been observed in the simulations, which consequently leads to an improvement of the antenna efficiency and bandwidth. Subsequently, the MEMS PBG antenna is micromachined and measured, and the simulation characteristics are verified by the measured curves of the MEMS PBG antenna. The measured peak return loss of PBG patch antenna is -21dB at 5.36GHz, and the bandwidth of 8.5%, which is three times wider than that of the conventional patch, therefore the gain and the bandwidth are enhanced by means of PBG process.

Fast parallel processing of gray-scale images and exact hard-clip thresholding are two important functionalities necessary in optoelectronic implementations of structural processors. The parallel nature of processing stems from optical implementation of local operations with arrays of active smart pixels. We have demonstrated a morphological image processor composed of arrays of bistable optoelectronic transceivers which are connected in differential pairs and work as comparators. The use of differential pairs of optical thyristors fabricated in GaAs technology allows to realize a dual rail architecture for this photonic morphological image processor. The processor consists of a thresholding module and a binary morphological processing module. The thresholding module decomposes gray level images into series of binary slices. In the binary morphological processing module operations are performed within a neighborhood defined by a structuring element implemented as a diffractive fan-out element. In the prototype set-up we demonstrate median filtering, dilation and erosion operations performed for an image of 8x8 pixels and threshold decomposition of 6 gray level images. In principle all rank order as well as morphological filters can be optically calculated in the set-up. Additional functionality of the processor is achieved with use of the electronic layer with digital cellular processors. The electronic layer, designed as an array of simple digital processors, realizes a set of operations on binary images using 4 bit programmable weights. Simulation results for 0.8 mum CMOS technology are presented. We discuss the limitations of the photonic morphological image processing with respect to bandwidth, parallelism and architecture of the processor.
