We have investigated various conductive and non-conductive polymers suitable for use as cladding layers in nonlinear optic (NLO) polymer based opto-electronic devices. Our goal was to maximize the nonlinearity of the core material, minimize the total poling voltage, and minimize the absorption loss. Using a cladding material that is more conductive than the NLO core material, the majority of the applied poling voltage is dropped across the core, realizing a maximum EO coefficient with minimum applied voltage. We found, however, that there are tradeoffs between absorption loss, conductivity, refractive index, materials processability and materials compatibility when using off-the-shelf materials.

This paper reviews our recent work on various planar-waveguide-type optical switching devices. Specifically we investigated N x N thermo-optic (TO) matrix switches. The matrix switch consists of N-2 switching units and the switching unit has two cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). Switching is achieved by using a phase control technique based on the TO effect. The switching power of an MZI unit and the switching speed are typically 0.4 W and 2 ms, respectively. For N = 16, we realized non-blocking connection with a very low-loss of 6.6 dB and a high-extinction ratio of 55 dB. We have also developed I x N configuration switches for use in optical path cross-connect systems. By integrating TO switches and arrayed-waveguide grating multi/demultiplexers, we fabricated single-chip optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM) for use in all-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) routing systems. We have developed a power consumption reduction technique that is effective for all MZI TO switches as regards large scale integrated switch applications.

This research explores architectures and design principles for monolithic optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) through the implementation of an optical multi-token-ring network testbed system. Monolithic smart pixel CMOS OEICs are of paramount importance to high performance networks, communication switches, computer interfaces, and parallel signal processing for demanding future multimedia applications. The general testbed system is called Reconfigurable Translucent Smart Pixel Array (R-Transpar) and includes a field programmable gate array (FPGA), a transimpedance receiver array, and an optoelectronic very large-scale integrated (OE-VLSI) smart pixel array. The FPGA is an Altera FLEX10K100E chip that performs logic functions and receives inputs from the transimpedance receiver array. A monolithic (OE-VLSI) smart pixel device containing an array of 4 x 4 vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) spatially interlaced with an array of 4 x 4 metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) detectors connects to these devices and performs optical input-output functions. These components are mounted on a printed circuit board for testing and evaluation of integrated monolithic OEIC designs and various optical interconnection techniques. The system moves information between nodes by transferring 3-D optical packets in free space or through fiber image guides. The R-Transpar system is reconfigurable to test different network protocols and signal processing functions. In its operation as a 3-D multi-token-ring network, we use a specific version of the system called Transpar-Token-Ring (Transpar-TR) that uses novel time-division multiplexed (TDM) network node addressing to enhance channel utilization and throughput. Host computers interface with the system via a high-speed digital I/O board that sends commands for networking and application algorithm operations. We describe the system operation and experimental results in detail.

Quantum photonic informatics involves manipulation and processing of information at a photon energy level. The qu-bit with optical modes containing one photon energy is described and photonic gates representing its quantum states are given and expanded into quantum systems and networks for computing and information processing. Integrated photonic devices are proposed for implementation of the quantum gates and networks and case studies are examined for further expansion and implementation of quantum algorithms.

We relate quantum mechanics to the concept of an experimental trial, borrowed from statistics, in order to make clear that devices designed using quantum-mechanical equations require, in effect, management by a Classical digital Process-control Computer (CPC). Energy dissipation essential for tolerance to component imperfections in classical digital computers is shown not to mix with quantum superposition expressed by the (necessarily unitary) quantum dynamics of a Schrodinger equation. This precludes so-called quantum computers from producing super-linear speed-up at a scale large enough to be useful, and at the same clarifies a conceptual separation between digital computing and devices exhibiting quantum phase sensitivity. Quantum effects, such as random-number generation and photon correlations, are known to be useful and show further great potential for devices for computational and other purposes. Several such quantum-based devices are discussed that require or can be made more effective by bridging between these devices and CPCs that manage them. While the interdisciplinary promise of 'quantum computing' has faded, the area of quantum-to-classical bridging, once liberated from the misleading goal of super-linear speed-up, invites vigorous study and invention.

We present a preliminary study of all-optical switching devices based on the photo and electrochromic behavior of sputtered and sol-gel based tungsten oxide films. While many questions remain unanswered these films show considerable promise for meeting a variety of switching applications. These switching applications complement the optical memory applications we have previously demonstrated. In the present study we have used 488 nm control light to switch 632 nm data light. The films range from about 100 mn to 900 nm in thickness and can be deposited on various substrates. The switching was characterized using single layer films. The switching time is currently submillisecond with incident control powers of just a few tens of milliwatts of control light using a spot size of about ten microns in diameter.

This paper considers the behaviour of a model persistent current qubit in the presence of a time-dependent electromagnetic field. A semi-classical (Floquet theory) approximation for the electromagnetic field is used to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) for the qubit, which is treated as a macroscopic quantum object. The qubit is described by a Hamiltonian involving the enclosed magnetic flux Phi and the electric displacement flux Q, which obey the quantum mechanical commutation relation [Phi ,Q] = ih. The paper includes a brief summary of recent work on quantum mechanical coherence in persistent current circuits, and the solution of the TDSE in superconducting rings. Of particular interest is the emergence of strongly non-perturbative behaviour that corresponds to transitions between the (time-averaged) energy levels of the qubit. These transitions are due to the strong coupling between the electromagnetic fields and the superconducting condensate and can appear at frequencies far below the frequencies predicted by conventional methods based on perturbations around the energy eigenstates of the time-independent system. The relevance of these non-perturbative processes to the operation of quantum logic gates based on superconducting circuits and the effect of the resultant nonlinearities on the environmental degrees of freedom coupled to the qubit are considered.

Cone beam reconstruction has attracted a great deal of attention in the medical imaging community. However, high-resolution cone beam reconstruction (CBR) involves a huge set of data and very time consuming computing. It usually needs customized hardware or a large-scale computer to achieve acceptable speed. Although the Feldkamp algorithm is an approximate CBR algorithm, it is a practical and efficient 3D reconstruction algorithm and is a basic component in several exact cone-beam reconstruction algorithms (CBRA). In this paper, we present a practical implementation for high-speed CBR on a commercially available PC based on hybrid computing (HC). We implement Feldkamp CBR with multi-level acceleration. We use HC utilizing single instruction multiple data (SIMD) and making execution units (EU) in the processor work effectively. We also utilize the multi-thread and fiber support on the operating system, which automatically enable the reconstruction parallelism in the multi-processor environment, and makes data I/O to the hard disk more effective. Memory and cache access optimization is done by properly data partition. This approach was tested on an Intel Pentium iii 500Mhz computer and was compared to the traditional implementation. It decreases more than 75% the filtering time for 288 pieces 512x512 projections, saves more than 60% of the reconstruction time for the 512(3) cube, and maintains good precision with less than 0.08% average error. Our system is cost-effective and high-speed. An effective reconstruction engine can be built with a market-available Symmetric Multi-processor (SMP) computer. This is an easy and cheap upgrade and is compatible with newer PC processors.

Summary form only given. We used the finite-difference time-domain method to solve Maxwell equations. More specifically, we applied the non-dissipative Yee's algorithm with a duality relation between the spatial representations of the electric and magnetic fields that represents both the differential and integral forms of Maxwell equations. To shorten the computational run time a parallel code was developed and run on a Pentium iii linux cluster.

GaInAs quantum wire (QWR) structures have been fabricated using the strain-induced lateral-layer ordering (SILO) process during molecular beam epitaxy. The SILO process is a one-step completely in situ self-assembly method for creating QWRs. The resultant dense array of QWRs has a low defect density, small quantum-like dimensions, and demonstrate strong lateral confinement. More importantly, the band gap of GaInAs QWRs grown by the SILO process responds to temperature changes in ways that deviate from the norm for iii-V semiconductors. This band gap behavior with respect to temperature of SILO grown GaInAs QWRs is both physically interesting and potentially applicable to optoelectronic devices.
