Edge computing is an emerging computing model that extends the cloud and its services to the edge of network. In edge-cloud computing, a set of servers are deployed near the mobile devices such that these devices can offload tasks to the servers with low latency. Most existing works usually focus on offloading tasks under the premise that sufficient resources are owned by edge servers while ignoring budget constraint of user. If failed to consider about this, the existing offloading schemes may cause user to overspend, this is unacceptable to user. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the task offloading problem in edge-cloud computing aiming to minimize the task duration while tasks are generated by user with constrainted budget. Besides edge servers are equipped with limited computation and storage resources. Specifically, the problem we formulate is an NP-hard problem. In order to solve it, we propose a heuristic strategy. The simulation results prove that the proposed scheme can improve the success ratio and reduce the task duration, compared to random and greedy offloading schemes.

Implementation of photonic analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) using an optimal way of information parallelizing at the level of circuit solutions can significantly improve the performance of the total system (signal source - ADC - computing device). Traditional approach for fast photonic ADC uses processing every time-neighbor sample of input signal by its own channel. For the input signals with limited bandwidth, another approach can be used, in which every input signal spectral interval is processed by its own channel, and the width of the spectral interval is adjusted with the performance of an electronic ADC used for digitizing. In many cases, output signals of electronic ADCs are sufficient for obtaining necessary information from the input signal without joint processing of the output signals of all channels;otherwise, outputs of all channels can be Fourier-processed and concatenated to get complete spectrum of a wideband microwave input signal. For realization of this scheme, a mode locked stable laser together with an amplitude modulator and two combs of narrow band optical filters can be used. Alternatively, a mode locked laser can be replaced with a continuous wave (CW) laser together with a number of optical modulators. Performance capabilities for signal ADC using spectral intervals are estimated. Parameters for optimal system operation are derived. It is shown that, for modern optical elements, 8-10 effective bits can be achieved in the digitized signal.

Multiple access mobile edge computing has been proposed as a promising technology to bring computation services close to end users, by making good use of edge cloud servers. In mobile device clouds (MDC), idle end devices may act as edge servers to offer computation services for busy end devices. Most existing auction based incentive mechanisms in MDC focus on only one round auction without considering the time correlation. Moreover, although existing single round auctions can also be used for multiple times, users should trade with higher bids to get more resources in the cascading rounds of auctions, then their budgets will run out too early to participate in the next auction, leading to auction failures and the whole benefit may suffer. In this paper, we formulate the computation offloading problem as a social welfare optimization problem with given budgets of mobile devices, and consider pricing longer of mobile devices. This problem is a multiple-choice multi-dimensional 0-1 knapsack problem, which is a NP-hard problem. We propose an auction framework named MAFL for long-term benefits that runs a single round resource auction in each round. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed auction mechanism outperforms the single round by about 55.6% on the revenue on average.

Computational thinking lies at the intellectual core of computing. Promoting computational thinking ability requires that students are provided with a clear understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms, and data representation. We propose to use force-feedback educational robotic devices for hands-on teaching of computational thinking. The addition of haptic feedback for teaching abstract concepts of computer science offers several advantages, as haptic feedback (i) enables an effective means of data hiding, (ii) ensures a high level of student engagement by adding another pathway for perception and enabling active physical interaction, and (iii) improves student motivation through the novelty effect. Moreover, visually impaired students may benefit from replacement of visualization with haptic feedback. We present a force-feedback application for teaching sorting algorithms and report initial student evaluations of integrating haptics to promote computational thinking.

The number of online devices with on board sensors is growing steadily in the last years, leading to many solutions depending on data crowd-sourcing. In these scenarios, usually the collected data need to be transferred on a cloud infrastructure, where can later be aggregated and analyzed using specialized data processing algorithms. The simple task of data transfer becomes a problem in stressed environments such as space communication systems, drone monitoring or marine ecosystems, where the network connectivity is unstable and not available for long period of times. In this paper, we propose a novel Internet of Things (IoT) data transfer framework for cloud-based applications in delay tolerant environments. The framework implements a protocol that is i) elastic, taking advantage of short connection times;ii) lightweight, which makes it suitable for IoT devices;and iii) secure, which makes it a good choice also for applications with sensitive data. We evaluate the framework in a real system with a marine navigation application, demonstrating its benefits in terms of performance, resiliency, and security.

In designing a particle filter, the most important task is choosing the importance function that can generate good particles. If the importance function, also called proposal, does a satisfactory job, the particles of the filter are placed in parts where the explored state space has high probability mass. Further, the weights of these particles are not too disparate in values. An important class of particle filtering that uses a clever approach to create good importance functions is known as auxiliary particle filtering. In this paper, we first analyze the approximations used for computing the particle weights of the standard auxiliary particle filter. We show that these approximations can be detrimental to the performance of the auxiliary particle filter. Further, we propose a more comprehensive evaluation of the weights, which leads to a much enhanced performance of the auxiliary particle filter. We also demonstrate the improvements with computer simulations.

Guaranteed numerical precision of each elementary step in a complex computation has been the mainstay of traditional computing systems for many years. This era, fueled by Moore's law and the constant exponential improvement in computing efficiency, is at its twilight from tiny nodes of the Internet-of-Things, to large HPC computing centers, subpicoJoule/operation energy efficiency is essential for practical realizations. To overcome the power wall, a shift from traditional computing paradigms is now mandatory. In this paper we present the driving motivations, roadmap, and expected impact of the European project OPRECOMP. OPRECOMP aims to (i) develop the first complete transprecision computing framework, (ii) apply it to a wide range of hardware platforms, from the sub-milliWatt up to the MegaWatt range, and (iii) demonstrate impact in a wide range of computational domains, spanning IoT, Big Data Analytics, Deep Learning, and HPC simulations. By combining together into a seamless design transprecision advances in devices, circuits, software tools, and algorithms, we expect to achieve major energy efficiency improvements, even when there is no freedom to relax end-to-end application quality of results. Indeed, OPRECOMP aims at demolishing the ultraconservative "precise" computing abstraction, replacing it with a more flexible and efficient one, namely transprecision computing.

Multiple access mobile edge computing is an emerging technique to bring computation resources close to end mobile users. By deploying edge servers at WiFi access points or cellular base stations, the computation capabilities of mobile users can be extended. Existing works mostly assume the remote cloud server can be viewed as a special edge server or the edge servers are willing to cooperate, which is not practical. In this work, we propose an edge-cloud cooperative architecture where edge servers can rent for the remote cloud servers to expedite the computation of tasks from mobile users. With this architecture, the computation offloading problem is modeled as a mixed integer programming with delay constraints, which is NP-hard. The objective is to minimize the total energy consumption of mobile devices. We propose a greedy algorithm with approximation radio of (1 + epsilon) as well as a simulated annealing algorithm to effectively solve the problem. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that, the proposed greedy algorithm can achieve the same application completing time budget performance of the Brute Force optional algorithm with only 31% extra energy cost.

Nonlinear adaptive filters often show some sparse behavior due to the fact that not all the coefficients are equally useful for the modeling of any nonlinearity. Recently, a class of proportionate algorithms has been proposed for nonlinear filters to leverage sparsity of their coefficients. However, the choice of the norm penalty of the cost function may be not always appropriate depending on the problem. In this paper, we introduce an adaptive combined scheme based on a block-based approach involving two nonlinear filters with different regularization that allows to achieve always superior performance than individual rules. The proposed method is assessed in nonlinear system identification problems, showing its effectiveness in taking advantage of the online combined regularization.
