Scalable quantum information processing and the optical topological quantum computer

Optical quantum computation has represented one of the most successful testbed systems for quantum information processing. Along with ion-traps and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), experimentalists have demonstrated control of qubits, multi-gubit gates and small quantum algorithms. However, photonic based qubits suffer from a problematic lack of a large scale architecture for fault-tolerant computation which could conceivably be built in the near future. While optical systems are, in some regards, ideal for quantum computing due to their high mobility and low susceptibility to environmental decoherence, these same properties make the construction of compact, chip based architectures difficult. Here we discuss many of the important issues related to scalable fault-tolerant quantum computation and introduce a feasible architecture design for an optics based computer. We combine the recent development of topological cluster state computation with the photonic module, simple chip based devices which can be utilized to deterministically entangle photons. The integration of this operational unit with one of the most exciting computational models solves many of the existing problems with other optics based architectures and leads to a feasible large scale design which can continuously generate a 3D cluster state with a photonic module resource cost linear in the cross sectional size of the cluster.

One of the current research directions in biological nanotechnology is the use of bacteriorhodopsin in the fabrication of protein-based photonic devices. Bacteriorhodopsin, with its unique light-activated photocycle, nanoscale size, cyclicity (> 107), and natural resistance to harsh environmental conditions, provides for protein-based memories that have a comparative advantage over magnetic and optical data storage devices. However, the construction of protein-based memories has been severely limited by fundamental issues that exist with such devices, such as unwanted diffraction effects. In this paper, we propose an approximation algorithm for coping with diffraction effects, that improves over previously proposed algorithms. ©2010 IEEE.

The design of photonic devices in computer simulators is a complex task and, in some cases, there are not analytical solutions to support. An alternative is the application of some optimizations techniques. For this reason, this work presents three different bio-inspired algorithms (GA, ES and AIS) to optimize three different photonic devices. The main objectives are providing a flexible and efficient computational optimization tool to design different photonic devices and benchmarking the efficiency of each one. In addition, the efficiency results compare the optimization convergence and computational efforts necessary for each optimization.

In the present paper, we have analyzed nonlinear harmonic response in microwave, photonic devices, and waveguides, applications. Based on Frobenius power series expansions, a special software has been cast and applied with very small truncation error (less than 10-8). Four basic sets of nonlinear harmonic response systems have been processed: i) New algorithms for computing twelve Jacobian elliptic functions are built on the basis of transformation of Jacobian elliptic integrals to nonlinear differential equations of second order, where each function has its generating recurrence formula., ii) Self-trapping (paraxial propagation) in W-shaped refractive index fibers are parametrically investigated, iii) Implementation of the Frobenius method for the numerical solution of initial value problems involving second order nonlinear differential equations with or without arbitrary forced functions under the forms: (Equation presented) are discussed, where α, β, and γ are physical parameters;both m and n are positive solid integers, and f(t) is an arbitrary exciting function, and finally iv) waveguides and multiplexers. A novel software program has been designed and processed to handle the above problems.

We analyze crosstalk-free widesense nonblocking multicast multi-log networks. Widesense nonblocking strikes a balance between strictly nonblocking and rearrangeably non- blocking both in terms of cost-effectiveness and route establishment efficiency. The problem is important as cost-effective and efficient crosstalk-free multicast photonic switching networks are likely to play an important role at the optical Internet core in the future. Particularly, for the first time in the literature we derive conditions for the d-ary multi-log network to be crosstalk-free multicast widesense nonblocking under the window algorithm for any given window size. Several interesting by-products follow from our approach and result. Firstly, our result allows for computing the best window size minimizing the fabric cost, showing that the multi-log network is a very good candidate for crosstalk-free multicast switching architectures. Secondly, our analytical approach - partly based on applying the celebrated Konig-Egevary theorem - also gives a much simpler proof of the known case when the network is not required to be crosstalk-free. Thirdly, for window sizes of 1 and d n , we re-discovered known results for the multi-log multicast networks under the so-called fanout constraints.

Bacterial contamination of food products puts the public at risk and also generates a substantial cost for the food-processing industry. One of the greatest challenges in the response to these incidents is rapid recognition of the bacterial agents involved. Only a few currently available technologies allow testing to be performed outside of specialized microbiological laboratories. Most current systems are based on the use of expensive PCR or antibody-based techniques, and require complicated sample preparation for reliable results. Herein, we report our efforts to develop a non-invasive optical forward-scattering system for rapid, automated identification of bacterial colonies grown on solid surfaces. The presented system employs computer-vision and pattern-recognition techniques to classify scatter patterns produced by bacterial colonies irradiated with laser light. Application of Zernike and Chebyshev moments, as well as Haralick texture descriptors for image feature extraction, allows for a very high recognition rate. An SVM algorithm was used for classification of patterns. Low error rates determined by cross-validation, reproducibility of the measurements, and robustness of the system prove that the proposed technology can be implemented in automated devices for bacterial detection.

In this paper, we present novel designs for all optical analog-to-digital converters simulated and realized in photonic crystal platforms. The designs presented were implemented on both photonic bandgap based structures as well as self collimation based structures. Numerical simulation results as well as fabrication results are also included. Characterization results validate the designs presented for a functional all optical two bit analog to digital converters in photonic crystals. The design presented can be further scaled to higher resolution conversion as well as to no optical frequencies if necessary.

Two-dimensional 1x3 photonic crystal power dividers in a square lattice of dielectric columns are proposed for equal-power splitting at 1.55 mu m wavelength. Dielectric columns having different radius are used for impedance matching such that high power transmission and equal-power division can be realized. Two proposed structures having normalized total transmitted powers as large as 0.99 are successfully designed.

Single mode SOI waveguide devices with low propagation loss and low insertion loss have been demonstrated at wavelength lambda=13 mu m and 1.55 mu m, respectively. The wavelength resonator devices have many applications in optical communications including wavelength filtering, routing, switching, modulating, multiplexing, optic buffer, and demultiplexing. We use the free carrier plasma dispersion effect to design the switch of SOI buffer and photonic crystal Bandgap (PBG) waveguide buffer devices are simulated by Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) methods. The technology have made it possible to create micrometer-size photonics devices based on reasonably low-loss semiconductor waveguides. To characterize SOI buffer waveguides delays, the analysis of wavelength response, the number of propagation modes and the waveguide loss are investigated at wavelength 1.55 mu m.
