Standard digital correlators, which rely on the acquisition of signals and their processing, are intrinsically limited by the clock jitter of the analog-to-digital converters, and by the processing capabilities in real time of digital electronics. Here, we demonstrate a novel analog correlator architecture based on a simple photonic platform, suitable for wideband RF signal processing. The system gives access in real time to the entire correlation function of two signals by computing the cross correlation coefficients for 200 values of their relative delay simultaneously. The time-delay step can be adjusted from a few ns down to a few ps, enabling us to process signals with MHz to multi-GHz bandwidth. The system, based on a frequency shifting loop, can find applications in radar, electronic warfare, imaging, and radio-astronomy.

So far, the instantaneous bandwidth of conventional digital real-time spectrum analyzers is limited to a few GHz, a limitation set by the clock jitter of the analog-to-digital converters, and by the processing capabilities in real time of digital electronics. Here, we propose a simple analog architecture of RF spectrum analyzer based on photonic frequency- shifting loops. It utilizes only compact commercial telecom components, a single CW laser, and slow electronic resources (10 MSa/s). The probability of intercept is 100%, the instantaneous bandwidth reaches 16 GHz, and the spectral and temporal resolutions are respectively equal to 160 MHz and 50 mu s.

Microwave photonic technology has advantages of large bandwidth, high frequency, flexible reconfigurability and immunity to electromagnetic interference, which is widely used for the generation and processing of microwave signals. In this paper, we review our recent works about microwave signal generation and processing based on optical domain controlling, including photonic generation of multi-band and multi-format microwave waveforms, and microwave photonic temperature interrogation based on temperature-to-time mapping. The proposed works have great potential in practical applications, such as radar, measurement as well as sensing.

Waveguide crossings are critical components for creating 'overpasses' across photonic nanowires and other complex optical signal processing elements, enabling the construction of integrated photonic circuits on a single chip as well as large-scale integrated photonic neural networks. This paper presents a design proposal for a waveguide crossing based on a pair of perpendicular multimode waveguides using the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material platform. The central region employs shallow etched depth core waveguides to achieve perfect interference at the intersection point without mode scattering. Numerical simulations indicate that the designed waveguide crossing exhibits very low insertion loss, not exceeding 0.66 dB across the wavelength range from 1550 nm to 1600 nm. Additionally, the device demonstrates minimal insertion losses of 0.025 dB for a height tolerance of Ah = ±10 nm, 0.014 dB for a shallow etched depth tolerance of AhSED = ±20 nm, and 0.12 dB for a width tolerance of ?W=±100 nm. These excellent performance characteristics position the waveguide crossing as a promising candidate for broad applications in high-end optical signal processing circuits, on-chip photonic networks, and low-loss, wide-bandwidth photonic neural networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Graph processing algorithms are attracting more attention with the increasing need of processing irregular large-scale graphs in nature and social sciences. The memory access becomes the performance bottleneck of graph applications, sourced from high memory bandwidth requirements, poor locality, and sparsity. Conventional graph accelerators with electronic interconnect utilize customized execution pipelines and high-bandwidth memory. However, they still face the problem of the memory wall and limited working frequency. Consequently, there is an increasing interest in investigating optical interconnect and photonic computing as an alternative technology because of higher bandwidth and ultra-fast processing *** this paper, we propose the first photonic graph processing accelerator, PhotonGraph. We propose a detailed workflow for photonic graph processing including scatter phase and gather phase. We design a dedicated photonic sparsity compression computing core for the gather phase based on the wavelength routing technique. We also introduce the data fetching and dispatching in the scatter phase with optical network-on-chip and high-bandwidth memory(HBM). PhotonGraph outperforms the GPU platform with 151x better performance and 1111x greater energy efficiency. Additionally, we surpass state-of-the-art processing-in-memory(PIM) accelerators by 207x in terms of performance and 114x in terms of energy efficiency. © 2025 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). GF Fotonix, monolithic silicon platform has been developed by Globalfoundries on 300 mm high volume manufacturing environment. Both optical and electrical interconnects were enabled in the state-of-art design kit and can be realized in the same package form factor. Robust optical yield corridor IL feedback was performed with 6 months interval and no post-fab effect during electrical interconnect processing was observed. Stacked die level, point of concept (POC) modules were built and subject to various environmental conditions. It is worthwhile pointing out that this is the first industry demonstration of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) compatibility at 105 degrees C, at the package level.

The continuous increase in GPU performance benefits a wide range of high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Slower growth of transistor density and limited size of chip die are now posing significant challenges to scale GPUs. The chiplet technology provides a potential solution to surpass these limitations. However, the performance of these chiplet-based GPUs is often constrained by the metallic-based interconnects between the chiplets. Emerging technologies such as photonic interconnect can overcome the limitations of metallic interconnects, offering several superior properties, such as high bandwidth density and low energy consumption. In this paper, we propose SEECHIP: a Scalable and Energy-Efficient CHIPlet-based GPU architecture using photonic links. SEECHIP introduces a novel photonic inter-chiplet network that supports both unicast and broadcast communication, providing the same transmission bandwidth at both the sending and receiving ends. In addition, we propose a tailored hierarchical memory architecture, which is more suitable for the parallelization of general-purpose HPC applications. Simulation results using 14 benchmarks show that SEECHIP can achieve 48.4% and 62.7% reduction in execution time and energy consumption, respectively, as compared to other GPUs with metallic or photonic interconnects. Simulation results also show that SEECHIP has good scalability compared with the other GPUs.

We propose a photonic MEMS microphone based on a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) which optically transducers the membrane mounted at the end of a fiber under incident acoustics. As a result of the optical transduction, an outstanding sensitivity to weak acoustic waves is shown compared to commercial capacitive MEMS microphones. In addition, a flat noise spectrum with suppressed 1/f noise is demonstrated, which has been rarely reported before. It is also experimentally shown that the photonic MEMS microphone exhibits a broadband response from 20 Hz to 20 KHz, with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) up to 60.33 dB at 2 KHz. This is achieved using simple small-size photonic components without any amplification and processing circuits, showing its promising applications for high-sensitive sound detection.
