Understanding the interactions between light and small samples at the diffraction limit is critical for solving inverse problems in microscopy. Several models for light and matter interactions have been proposed, including Born and Rytov approximations, Mie theory, T-matrix, Finite element methods, and coupled wave theory. Coupled wave approaches provide unique advantages for realistic samples by allowing refinement of the sample in the Fourier domain, where many realistic samples are considered sparse. However, this model still relies on computationally intensive operations as the sample and field resolution increases. In this paper, we develop an optimized open-source tool using established coupled-wave theory. This can be computationally efficient for realistic problems, since many practical samples are sparse in the Fourier domain. Then we analyze the computational complexity of the model and optimize the process.

As the demand for scalable and complex on-chip nanophotonic devices with multi-wavelength and multi-mode optical functionalities increases, fast and efficient design algorithms have become an essential tool in silicon photonics. Although inverse design coupled with adjoint optimization has emerged as a powerful method to design such devices by requiring only two simulations in each iteration of the optimization process, these simulations still make up the vast majority of the necessary computations, and render the design of complex devices with large footprints computationally infeasible. Here, we present a substantial speed-up in the finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) simulations by introducing a factorization caching approach, and significantly reduce the computational requirements for device optimization. Specifically, we cache the symbolic and numerical factorizations of system matrices corresponding to discretized Maxwell's equations, and re-use them throughout the entire optimization. Using this method, we reduce the majority of the computational operations in the FDFD simulations and drastically improve the simulation speeds. To demonstrate the resulting computational advantage compared to conventional FDFD methods, we show simulation speedups reaching as high as 8.5-fold in the design of broadband wavelength and mode multiplexers. These results present significant enhancements in the computational efficiency of inverse photonic design, and can greatly accelerate the use of machine-optimized devices in future photonic systems.

While the circular polarization of electromagnetic waves is well known from its poplar definition, its handedness is not uniquely defined, even with given phase convention, observer location and phase difference. For example a circular polarization Ex+jEz (j=sqrt(-1)) traveling along y axis has opposite handedness of the polarization to Ex+jEy traveling in z axis, counter-intuitively. This cannot be explained by the conventional definition, due to the lack of clarity of the definition. In general, when there are two orthogonally linearly-polarized plane waves, say E1 and E2, choice of the reference wave to be E1 or E2 and application of the phase difference to the other wave are ambiguous. This causes confusions and sometimes contradictory results at least in simulations. This paper suggests the necessary and sufficient conditions with the help of the propagation vector and magnetic fields to define uniquely the handedness of a circular or elliptical polarization and thus a desired handedness can be correctly injected in a simulation. The newly proposed triad is added to the conventional definition for easy determining the handedness. The unique handedness of a circular polarization is critical in design, simulation, quantification of polarization-sensitive nanophotonics devices where wave can travel in 4 pi space along any arbitrary direction.

Broadband and omnidirectional anti-reflection coatings, Distributed Bragg Reflectors ( DBR), and optical bandpass filter coatings in the 3-5 mu m and 1-12 mu m IR ranges are of crucial importance in the design of high-efficiency MWIR / LWIR detectors, Thermophotovoltaic devices, and IR imaging systems. We discuss a novel inverse design approach to multilayer optical coatings by a Transfer Matrix Method simulation and optimization algorithm. This algorithm iteratively simulates a multilayer structure's reflection and transmission characteristics by the Transfer Matrix Method and updates layer thicknesses to optimize a performance metric - whether reflection, transmission, or filter performance - over a given band and range of angles of incidence. The optimization procedure provides a systematic, computational approach to designing optical coatings with desired reflection, transmission, and absorption characteristics over wavelength bands and angles of incidence of interest in an application. We show that Distributed Bragg Reflectors and Anti-reflection coatings generated by the algorithm outperform conventional quarter-wavelength layer coatings over broadband MWIR and LWIR ranges and angles of incidence as high as 70 degrees, while reducing total component thickness significantly - a major benefit when fabricating optical coatings on semiconducting substrates directly. We also discuss how the approach can be extended to sharp-cutoff broadband bandpass filter design.

Driven by the miniaturization of integrated electronics and the increasing demand for ultrafast information transmission in communication systems, investigations into functional devices based on spoof surface plasmonic polaritons (SPPs) have garnered significant attention. However, the characteristics of spoof SPPs are related to geometric parameters of the unit structure, the functions of devices that composed by unit structures cannot be altered by changing the sizes of structures. The next focus to be investigated is the reconfigurable and active control of the device. Herein, we report a reconfigurable and direction-controllable coupler for spoof SPPs to spatial radiated waves. By changing the rotation angles of unit cells, it becomes possible to independently control the reflection phases. Through manipulation of different phase gradients, various reflection angles can be achieved at a fixed frequency. The results confirm that the proposed coupler holds great promise for applications in reconfigurable functional devices. © 2024 spie.

The impact of optical feedback on the emission properties of edge-emitting diode lasers is crucial for their use in various applications with unavoidable optical feedback. A hybrid master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) concept based on a low-power laser (MO) and a tapered amplifier (TPA) is well suited for those applications. The MOPA offers the ability to mechanically separate the MO from the TPA, which allows to shield the MO against possible optical feedback from the TPA by using an optical isolator. However, the feedback emitted from the TPA towards the MO has not been investigated in detail yet. In addition to the feedback from the TPA the MOPA as a whole can be subject to external feedback. Depending on the beam path in the respective application, feedback ratios in the range from 10(-4) to 10(-2) to the TPA may occur. The optical feedback coupled to the TPA is expected to be also amplified in the TPA which increases the feedback towards the MO dramatically. Therefore, the propagation of feedback light through the TPA and its emission characteristics towards the MO have to be studied in detail. A beam propagation method including a model for the charge carriers and a fast thermal solver utilizing a Green's function approach is used to simulate feedback propagation inside the TPA. A description of the model, with focus on the thermal solver, will be presented as well as a comparison to measurements. The results allow to optimize MOPAs with respect to feedback more accurately.

A four-frame imaging ultra-fast CMOS image sensor for inertial confinement fusion diagnosis is studied. Based on the 0.18 μm standard CMOS technology, the design and simulation of the CMOS image sensor are completed. And the logic reliability of the CMOS imaging sensor based on the in situ pixel division scheme is simulated and verified. The simulation results show that the CMOS image sensor can capture four images at a time, and the time resolution of each image could be controlled at about 300 ps, the frames interval between two adjacent images could be controlled at about 600 ps. © 2024 spie.

Accurate simulation is a critical requirement for modern optical systems, but precise theoretical modeling can be challenging due to various factors such as misalignment, theoretical approximations, and instrument errors. This paper presents the black-box simulation method, which addresses these limitations by training the optical system model using the optical field outputs. This approach leads to more accurate simulations, making it possible to effectively train optical Neural Network systems for improved performance.

Hexagonal III-nitride semiconductors exhibit internal polarization fields along their c-direction. In regions with graded mole fractions, the polarization gradient creates bound volume charge densities. Due to their electrostatic effect, they affect the balance of mobile charges, and can lead to polarization induced doping. In this contribution, drift-diffusion type simulations are employed in order to analyze a pn-junction based on polarization induced charges, and an analytical formula for calculating the bound charge density is given.

The use of 3D Monte Carlo simulations for the study of an indirect time of flight (iToF) pixel revealed underlying information compared to conventional simulation tools. Experimental tendencies and results are systematically compared with results obtained numerically. During the sensor operation, iToF pixels reconstruct the depth information using an optical signal modulated in intensity at high operation frequencies of hundreds of MHz. A demodulation operation samples the photogenerated charges at different times in a single pixel. An efficient transfer is dependent of the charge carrier path in the pixel volume. Through the coupling of 3D Monte Carlo with a commercial Poisson solver and optical simulation tools, a complete and accurate simulation methodology was developed allowing the estimation of iToF main figures of merit such as demodulation contrast, parasitic light sensitivity and quantum efficiency. The method consists of generating a light impulse and studying the distribution and collection of each unitary charge in time through MC simulations. Detailed information can be obtained in the 3D volume of a pixel for the photogenerated carriers. The efficiency of charges transfer from the pixel volume to sensing nodes is given at the operation frequency by the demodulation contrast. The electrostatic potential barriers reducing the transfer efficiency can be easily identified and lost photogenerated carriers can be estimated. The prediction accuracy of Monte Carlo simulation is further improved through the coupling of photogeneration and electron mobility profiles extracted from optical simulation and drift-diffusion-based-technology computed-aided design tools respectively. A non optimized small pitch pixel was optimized thanks to these advanced multi-physics simulations.
