Quantitative measurements of the progression (or regression) of carotid plaque burden are important in monitoring patients and evaluating new treatment options. 3D ultrasound (US) has been used to monitor the progression of carotid artery plaques in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Different methods of measuring various ultrasound phenotypes of atherosclerosis have been developed. In this work, we extended concepts used in intima-media thickness (IMT) measurements based on 2D images and introduced a metric called 3D vessel-wall-plus-plaque thickness (3D VWT), which was obtained by computing the distance between the carotid wall and lumen surfaces on a point-by-point basis in a 3D image of the carotid arteries. The VWT measurements were then superimposed on the arterial wall to produce the VWT map. Since the progression of plaque thickness is important in monitoring patients who are at risk for stroke, we also computed the change of VWT by comparing the VWT maps obtained for a patient at two different time points. In order to facilitate the visualization and interpretation of the 3D VWT and VWT-Change maps, we proposed a technique to flatten these maps in an area-preserving manner.

With thin and thick section Multi-slice CT images at lung cancer screening, we have statistically and quantitatively shown and evaluated the diagnostic capabilities of these slice thicknesses on physicians' pulmonary nodule diagnosis. To comparatively evaluate the 2 mm and 10 mm slice thicknesses, MSCT images of 360 people were read by six physicians. The reading criteria consisted of nodule for further examination (NFE), nodule for no further examination (NNFE) and no abnormality (NA) case. For reading results evaluation;firstly, cross-tabulation was carried out to roughly analyze the diagnoses based on whole lung field and each lung lobes. Secondly, from semi-automated extraction result of the nodule, detailed quantitative analysis was carried out to determine the diagnostic capabilities of two slice thicknesses. Finally, using the reading results of 2 mm thick image as the gold standard, the diagnostic capabilities were analyzed through the features and locations of pulmonary nodules. The study revealed that both slice thicknesses can depict lung cancer. Thin section may not be effective to diagnose nodules of <= 3 mm in size and nodules of <= 55 mm in size for thick section. Though thick section is less tiring for reading physicians, it is not good at depicting nodules located at the border of lung upper lobe and which have a pixel size distance of <= 55 from the chest wall. The information presented may serve as a useful reference to determine in which particular pulmonary nodule condition the two slice thicknesses can be effectively used for early detection of lung cancer.

The development of methods to accurately and reproducibly recover useful quantitative information from medical images is often hampered by uncertainties in handling the data related to: image acquisition parameters, the variability of normal human anatomy and physiology, the presence of disease or other abnormal conditions, and a variety of other factors. This talk will review image analysis strategies that make use of models based on geometrical and physical/biomechanical information to help constrain the range of possible solutions in the presence of such uncertainty. The discussion will be focused by looking primarily at several problem areas in the realms of neuroanatomical structure analysis and cardiac function analysis, along with some work in cellular image analysis, with an emphasis on image segmentation and motion/deformation tracking. The presentation will include a description of the problem areas and visual examples of the image datasets being used, an overview of the mathematical techniques involved and a presentation of results obtained when analyzing actual patient image data using these methods. Emphasis will be placed on how image-derived information and appropriate modeling can be used together to address the image analysis and processing problems noted above.

Obtaining new information on the natural world involves direct observation, measurement and experimentation. However, this can be challenging for species that are very small, cryptic, sensitive, fragile, rare, dangerous or live in extreme environments. As a result, information on the life history, behavior, physiology, and ecology of many animals is scant or non-existent. The scientific field of bio-logging has existed for many years, but recent advances in electronic miniaturization and digital information processing and storage are providing new insights into the hidden lives of animals that can only be studied vicariously, that is, indirectly through the use of technology. Bio-logging generally involves an animal- borne instrument that monitors or records aspects of an animal's biology (e.g., behavior, movements, physiology) and its environment. For example, bio-logging instruments can record video or still images of animal behavior and record data from a variety of sensors that monitor location and locomotion (three-dimensional movement), physiology (body temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen concentration), and environmental variables (ambient temperature, light level, oxygen concentration, salinity, sound). This information is either stored for later recovery or transmitted immediately. In many cases, the initial challenge is locating the species, then attaching and recovering the instruments. However, as bio-logging technology becomes smaller and more data rich, we face the challenge of storing, classifying, analyzing, integrating, and disseminating the data and results. New methods of analysis will be necessary to handle the staggering volume of information. Creating data rich, virtual worlds in which to view and integrate data will require advanced computing capability. If multiple images of a scene are available instead of a single image, we can use the additional information conveyed by the set of images to generate a higher quality image. This can be done along multiple dimensions. Super-resolution algorithms use a set of shifted and rotated low resolution images to create a high resolution image. High dynamic range imaging techniques combine images with different exposure times to generate an image with a higher dynamic range. In this paper, we present a novel method to combine both techniques and construct a high resolution, high dynamic range image from a set of shifted images with varying exposure times. We first estimate the camera response function, and convert each of the input images to an exposure invariant space. Next, we estimate the motion between the input images. Finally, we reconstruct a high resolution, high dynamic range image using an interpolation from the non-uniformly sampled pixels. Applications of such an approach can be found in various domains, such as surveillance cameras, consumer digital cameras, etc.

We quantitatively investigated image properties in super-resolution microscopy using two-color fluorescence dip spectroscopy. To evaluate the properties, the point spread function (PSF) and contrast transfer function (CTF) were measured using a fluorescent scale together with a fluorescent bead. from the CTF, it has been found that visible light can resolve a 100 mn line-and-space pattern by microcopy, and provide a contrast of 10%. The CTF corresponds to a PSF with a FWHM of 130 mn. The value is two times finer than the diffraction limit size. An evaluation using a 100 run 0 fluorescent bead consistently supports the result given by the CTF for super-resolution microscopy. The measured CTF shows that super-resolution microscopy can indeed improve the optical properties of fluorescent images and enable us to observe a structure with a spatial resolution overcoming the diffraction limit.

The combination of pixelization and dimensional stacking uniquely facilitates the visualization and analysis of large, multidimensional databases. Pixelization is the mapping of each data point in some set to a pixel in a 2D image. Dimensional stacking is a layout method where N dimensions are projected onto the axes of an information display. We have combined and expanded upon both methods in an application named NeuroVis that supports interactive, visual data mining. Users can spontaneously perform ad hoc queries, cluster the results through dimension reordering, and execute analyses on selected pixels. While NeuroVis is not intrinsically restricted to any particular database, it is named after its original function: the examination of a vast neuroscience database. images produced from its approaches have now appeared in the Journal of Neurophysiology(1) and NeuroVis itself is being used for educational purposes in neuroscience classes at Emory University. In this paper we detail the theoretical foundations of NeuroVis, the interaction techniques it supports, an informal evaluation of how it has been used in neuroscience investigations, and a generalization of its utility and limitations in other domains.

We introduce an adaptive model fitting approach for the segmentation of vessels from 3D tomographic images. With this approach the shape and size of the 3D region-of-interest (ROI) used for model fitting are automatically adapted to the local width, curvature, and orientation of a vessel to increase the robustness and accuracy. The approach uses a 3D cylindrical model and has been successfully applied to segment human vessels from 3D MRA image data. Our experiments show that the new adaptive scheme yields superior segmentation results in comparison to using a fixed size ROI. Moreover, a validation of the approach based on ground-truth provided by a radiologist confirms its accuracy. In addition, we also performed an experimental comparison of the new approach with a previous scheme.

The analysis of the optic nerve head (ONH) in the retinal fundus is important for the early detection of glaucoma. In this study, we investigate an automatic reconstruction method for producing the 3-D structure of the ONH from a stereo retinal image pair;the depth value of the ONH measured by using this method was compared with the measurement results determined from the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT). We propose a technique to obtain the depth value from the stereo image pair, which mainly consists of four steps: (1) cutout of the ONH region from the retinal images, (2) registration of the stereo pair, (3) disparity detection, and (4) depth calculation. In order to evaluate the accuracy of this technique, the shape of the depression of an eyeball phantom that had a circular dent as generated from the stereo image pair and used to model the ONH was compared with a physically measured quantity. The measurement results obtained when the eyeball phantom was used were approximately consistent. The depth of the ONH obtained using the stereo retinal images was in accordance with the results obtained using the HRT. These results indicate that the stereo retinal images could be useful for assessing the depth of the ONH for the diagnosis of glaucoma.

Conventional analysis of cardiac ventricular function from magnetic resonance images is typically relying on short axis image information only. Usually, two cardiac phases of the cardiac cycle are analyzed-the end-diastole and end-systole. Unfortunately, the short axis ventricular coverage is incomplete and inconsistent due to the lack of image information about the ventricular apex and base. In routine clinical images, this information is only available in long axis image planes. Additionally, the standard ventricular function indices such as ejection fraction are only based on a limited temporal information and therefore do not fully describe the four-dimensional (41), 3D+time) nature of the heart's motion. We report a novel approach in which the long and short axis image data are fused to correct for respiratory motion and form a spatio-temporal 4D data sequence with cubic voxels. To automatically segment left and right cardiac ventricles, a 4D active appearance model was built. Applying the method to cardiac segmentation of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and normal hearts, our method achieved mostly subvoxel signed surface positioning errors of 0.2 +/- 1.1 voxels for normal left ventricle, 0.6 +/- 1.5 voxels for normal right ventricle, 0.5 +/- 2.1 voxels for TOF left ventricle, and 1.3 +/- 2.6 voxels for TOF right ventricle. Using the computer segmentation results, the cardiac shape and motion indices and volume-time curves were derived as novel indices describing the ventricular function in 4D.
