Building automation (BA) systems ensure comfort and safety of the occupants while optimizing energy consumption. Malfunctions of electro-mechanical equipment or the associated control function result not only in incorrect operation, but also wastage of energy. Automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD) of processes like heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) is a challenging task due to the diversity of the applications and inter-dependencies between the equipment. Semantic description of the building and its equipment can help AFDD agents to better understand the system and continuously examine its operation. However, AFDD using only the structural description of the building topology and the contained equipment without relating it to the control functions requires manual verification of the root cause. In this work, we added a model of the control functionality to the semantic information of the structural and topological description and represented it using W3C Web of Things Thing Descriptions. Based on these descriptions, we have demonstrated in a case study of a building installation that fault detection rules which have access to the semantic description of underlying control functions can be formulated more precisely and thereby avoid false positives.

This paper presents a statistical analysis on the population of high voltage power transformers, with particular consideration of pre-failure diagnostics. The objective of this case study is to indicate which parameters are exceeded the most often, and how they correlate with the other indicators. Almost 300 units were analyzed. According to these units, complete typical exploitation measurements were carried out in compliance with exactly the same methodology and measurement rigors. Seven diagnostic parameters were considered regarding further analysis. As a result, complete fingerprint of the exemplary population in terms of selected diagnostic parameters is evaluated. Results may be potentially used for improvement of the maintenance process and personalization of diagnostic criterions regarding other transformer populations.

The purpose of this article is to review new trends in monitoring the condition of engine oil on heavy-duty diesel engines. New solutions are being introduced into this industry with new advantages in the development of artificial intelligence, as well as machine learning and sensor technologies, which are applicable for data-based maintenance. They are called predictive maintenance. This paradigm replaces the old one. It changes the traditional routine preventive maintenance scheme and provides a deeper understanding of engine performance. Monitoring and checkout of the condition is necessary to maintain near real-time, because on-line control of equipment status can significantly reduce operating costs, by eliminating the need for equipment downtime for everyday diagnostics. The analysis based on oil samples is an effective tribotechnical systems approach for early diagnosis of failures, as it contains valuable information about the process of degradation of oil and the state of tribotechnical pairs. But there are some problems with this method. The first is the way of sampling. There are a lot of mistakes that can be made during the oil sampling process, and they can influence the results. Second is transportation to the place of analysis complicates the diagnostic process. That’s why we can’t say that this approach is an on-line method of diagnostic for the better prognosis of pending machinery failure needs to know a typical in time correlation between size and concentration of wear debris parts. But there is a note – a size of wear debris ranges in different work conditionals and depends on type of machine. For example, the size of wear debris during normal operation of a new engine ought to be at the range between 1 µm to 10 µm and at the constant correlation. Cattle breeding has been one of the most important industrial sectors in the world, since it is related to food security and the survival of the human race. Cattle diagnostics is a fundamental procedure for cattle breeders because it allows them to make strategic decisions, such as timely treatment in case of any abnormality (e.g., weight gain in herds, in their paddocks). This article aims to present a system to diagnose weight loss or gain in cattle under a rotational grazing scheme, considering the health status of the animal and the pasture. The diagnostic system is based on a fuzzy classifier that uses fuzzy logic to define the rules that characterize the diagnostic process, and fuzzy reasoning to determine the current situation given an input. In addition, the fuzzy classifier optimizes the rules using genetic algorithms, which modify the membership functions, providing a more accurate system for diagnosis. We tested our proposal with experimental cases, with promising results. The accuracy metrics have high values, indicating a low error rate in terms of false positives. In general, the values of the quality metrics are very good, with an accuracy close to 100% and an Area Under the Curve close to 1.

In many parts of the world, the water oil ratio (WOR) is approximately 9:1, resulting in large amounts of undesired fluids that require managing and processing, ultimately increasing cost. Water management strategies are applied to reservoirs to increase oil recovery and provide proper water conformance to minimize these impacts. The success rates of legacy water management strategies are approximately 40% of the causes for the low success rates involved in trying to control the water problem at later stages when treatment effectiveness is less effective and the diagnostics for the source of water production are more difficult. Early reservoir management strategies are needed to effectively reduce unwanted water production. In this paper, we discuss a unique 4-stage process starting with reservoir analysis. Water coning and channeling are characteristic signatures in log-to-log WOR vs. time plots (Chan. 1995). These plots are used to identify near-wellbore problems and provide guidance into potential reservoir-related water issues. If the water production is from a high permeability streak, water increases rapidly and follows a linear pattern in the WOR vs. time log-log plot. The slope severity is dependent upon the relative permeability profile, initial saturation conditions, reservoir fluid properties, and capillary pressure. In bottom water coning, the plot curve exhibits a slow WOR increase rate until reaching an asymptotic behavior versus time in a log-log plot. After assessing candidate wells for the identification of water production issue, a chemical-based treatment is executed to mitigate the problem, temporarily or permanently.
