A description is presented of functional state programming which is a simple block diagram representation of the states of operation through which the machine or process passes, the functional state diagram clearly depicts an easily understood overview of the machine control system. Each state is a unique set of machine or process conditions at a given point in time in the machine or process cycle. Each state is given a easily understood machine, process or industry name. The functions of the machine or process flow from one state to another as conditional events allow. The conditional events are presented as simple lists between state functional blocks. The functional sequence diagram depicts the control states in a way which naturally parallels the step by step functional operation of the machine.

An automatic system for process and device parameter extraction and failure analysis in CMOS processes is presented. The system checks in a short space of time whether the product parameters are within the specified tolerances. If not, the diagnostic part of the program searches for the cause of the failure. Compared to the standard test systems, this system offers the following advantages: (1) the product for which all key parameters lie within specified limits can be immediately identified; (2) the time needed for additional measurements of problem parameters can be minimized; (3) the source of the failure can be quickly found (in most cases); and (4) decision errors (product dispositioning, diagnostics) resulting from time-shortage or absence of specialized test engineers can be avoided.< >

Many information system endeavors fail (in terms of cost overruns, late delivery, or absolute inability to meet real needs). This is primarily still a matter of lack of effective communication by the various participants. Some possible improvements are discussed. They include: (1) adoption of engineering practice over all concepts, such as performance and safety, in the early stages of the definition; (2) use of a layered approach, where the design progresses in a top-down fashion, with few constraints at the start and assertion of more constraints until the definition is formal at completion; (3) better interaction and diagnostics among the various definition parts.< >

It is noted that state-of-the-art drives today have greatly improved features and capabilities due to being software-based (microprocessor-controlled). To exemplify this, attention is given to interfacing to hierarchy devices such as programmable controllers, instrument distributed systems, and other microprocessor-based equipment capable of performing many functions other than just controlling drive speeds. These functions can be programmable controller type functions, process maintenance, diagnostics, and so forth. The authors discuss the resulting need for functional descriptions in specifying drive systems, give an outline of a typical functional description, and offer pointers to permit optimization of the drive system.< >

The characterization of a data cluster representing a certain process behavior is achieved by developing steady-state nonlinear modeling of one or more critical signals as a function of other process variables in the system. This prediction model is used to detect either sensor maloperation or process anomaly by comparing the prediction and measurement of the same variable. A large database from a processcontrol system can be grouped using clustering algorithms. Automated generation of prediction models is applied to an industrial process to study the performance of this database-management approach.

An approach is presented which has been used to build intelligent processcontrol systems (IPCS). IPCSs expand on the conventional processcontrol systems with an additional, knowledge-based layer, where declarative programming methods are used extensively. The knowledge-based components represent a model of the process from multiple viewpoints and the simulator, monitor, control, diagnostics, and operator interface subsystems are coupled to a symbolic process database. A special architecture called the multigraph architecture has been used as a general framework for integrating symbolic and numeric programming techniques in a distributed environment. The knowledge-based components have been implemented as autonomous communicating objects. The application of concurrent programming techniques made possible the introduction of novel approaches in the design of the monitoring and diagnostic system. A prototype IPCS has been implemented on a network of VAX computers.

Adjustable-speed AC drives designed for constant-torque applications are not optimized for fluid-flow control applications. Though the required power and torque estimation is simple, torque/speed characteristics can be complicated in the case of a variable system head curve. A novel approach to variable-flow control is suggested. process-oriented factors like protection requirements and diagnostics are discussed. It is shown that specialized drives could be developed for fluid flow applications that provide improved, more efficient processcontrol while improving system reliability.
