This paper examines an actual example of a system and the efforts required to make it operational. It addresses both software and hardware considerations, as well as the dialogue between operating, maintenance and engineering personnel. The paper also discusses some of the human engineering aspects of utilizing color graphic displays in a plant environment. Another aspect that is addressed is the ability to decrease the mean-time-to-repair (MTTR), a malfunction by being able to quickly identify the fault. System availability is a combination of mean-time-between-failures (MTBF) and (MTTR).

The concepts of distributed control and programmable systems have been incorporated in a totally integrated drive system product. The functions of closed loop drive control, logic control, processcontrol, and supervisory control reside in one 'hardware/software' unit. The logical combination of multiple units forms a cohesive systems solution for an industrial process. The systems software and modular hardware are designed with the user in mind. The system is programmable in high level language for easy configurability to custom applications. Maintainability is enhanced with resident software and hardware diagnostics. Flexibility is assured through the use of general purpose hardware, computer assisted programming and complete self-documentation.

Summary form only given. A mobile CARS system for combustion and plasma diagnostics is described. The instrument is compact, easily transportable, readily adaptable to a wide variety of laboratories and experiments, capable of withstanding high noise and vibration levels, and remotely operable to protect the operator and delicate components from high noise of hazardous environments. The system is intended for single-pulse temperature and concentration measurements in practical combustion systems, such as gas turbines and diesel engines and plasma process applications. The instrument consists of three major subsystems: a transmitter, a receiver and a data acquisition and control subsystem. The instrument is operational and has been used in combustion analysis to demonstrate a dual-broadband CARS method which allows examination of a wide range of combustion species using only two laser dyes simultaneously.

Our polyester batch operation has seen several generations of processcontrol technologies over 24 years of operation. Initial control was manual, then to partial analog, then to centralized DDC control, finally to distributed digital control. The decision to go distributed was based on need to minimize interruptions with the best known control technologies. The paper reviews four years of experience with distributed control. The system selected consists of a host computer, two display controllers, two communication controllers, an operator interface station, one processcontroller for each line, a hot spare, and in-house diagnostics. All expectations of a distributed system have been met.

Fault detection and diagnosis are modeled as the nonlinear filtering problem of a linear system with jumping parameters. Assuming that faults occur according to a stationary finite-state Markov process, the optimal filter is represented in terms of a vector Zakai equation. This equation can be solved explicitly in a manner that reveals both the realization as well as the physical meaning of several suboptimal filtering schemes.

Microprocessor-based transmitters are a dramatic advancement in refinery technology. Standard analog transmitters communicate in only one direction, from the sensor to the control room. In contrast, microprocessor-based transmitters permit two-way communication between the transmitter and the control room - making possible remote programming, diagnostics, and decision-making. Smart transmitters promise significant productivity gains by extending the power of the microprocessor from the control room out into the plant. Citing both field studies and secondary data, this study analyzes, quantifies, and projects the improvements in refinery productivity made possible by the introduction of microprocessor-based transmitter technology.
