The programmable controller provides an industrially designed, modern, electronic control system that is used advantageously for casting processes. The intelligence and programmable capabilities of such controls provide casting systems with increased flexibility and reliability. The programmable controller can provide a variety of functions which can increase casting system capabilities. Such processes as sand mixing, mold making and pattern tracking, metal melt charging, casting process diagnostics, and others are controllable by programmable controls. The casting system uptime can be improved by utilizing the intelligence of the programmable cortroller to monitor the process' operations. Through the use of versatile operator/maintenance interfaces, such as printers or crt's, preventive maintenance can be initiated and machine malfunctions quickly identified.

During the past decade the performance requirements of train control equipment have consistently increased particularly in terms of reduced headways, unattended operation, improved availability and better ride quality. The increased functional complexity of the control equipment has resulted in the broad application of microprocessor-based hardware. This, in turn, has generated new potential problems associated with safety considerations, adequate training of maintenance personnel, special test equipment, and increased diagnostic and repair time. The microprocessor, however, also provides opportunities to solve these problems by incorporating additional features such as self-diagnostics, dual processor control for safety and switching head-end control of a train to a different car when a failure occurs in the normal head-end control equipment. The micro-processor-based approach also provides additional flexibility by allowing modification of the system operation and diagnostic capability through changes in software rather than in hardware as was the case with previous designs. In other words, the micro-processor-based approach allows more standardization of the system hardware than was previously possible.

This volume is a compilation of papers presented at a conference on hypersonics held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1961 and sponsored jointly by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the American Rocket Society. This volume undoubtedly contains one of the largest and most interesting collections of recent papers on metal and hybrid combustion. Most were presented at the AIAA Heterogeneous Combustion conference in December 1963. In the initial section of the book are some of the first published works on the analytical determination of metal burning rates, the various flame mechanisms of aluminum and magnesium, the combustion of aluminum in carbon dioxide atmospheres, and the ignition temperature of beryllium. Papers deal with the oxidation and flame studies with diborane and its alkyl derivatives and reaction studies between boron and nitrogen compounds. Papers in the third section deal with some aspects of the over-all hybrid combustion process.
