This paper presents sparse slow feature analysis (SFA) for efficient process monitoring and fault isolation, which is a new latent variable model for time series data. We first recast sparse SFA in terms of a novel regression-Type problem, and further incorporate l-process-norm penalty into the objective in order to promote sparsity. To solve the induced nonconvex optimization problem, a tailored iterative algorithm is developed. With the sparse representation, process variables with insignificant contributions can be completely omitted, and each latent variable relates only to a fraction of crucial process variables in comparison with the generic SFA. A new process monitoring and fault isolation approach is developed based on the sparse SFA, which results in improved monitoring performance, easy-To-interpret diagnostics, and meaningful process knowledge discovery. Case studies on the Tennessee Eastman process are carried out to address the applicability of the proposed approach. © 2019 IEEE.

System degradation under random effects evolves as a continuous time process. Lubrication oil analysis has been a health indicator for degrading industrial systems ever since World War II. Advancement of sensors and analytics methods for oil debris monitoring has led to the development of applications using Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) for lube oil analysis so that the system health condition can be diagnosed and predicted more effectively in the field of manufacturing and transportation. Complexity in lube oil-based prediction arises with its dual role i.e. lubricating oil is just not an information source for system health, it also inherits the degradation nature like other components in a system. In contrast, other degradation indicators have a single mission which is to indicate the system state. Frequent top-up to maintain oil quantity in system and regular replenishments of degraded oil further add complexity to system state prediction. The inter-dependence of lube oil degradation and system degradation generates the need for an integrated methodology under PHM for system Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction based on lube oil degradation. To accomplish this, a degradation model is being developed here using a continuous time stochastic process i.e. the Wiener process for lubricating oil degradation tracking and RUL prediction under regular oil top-up effects. The impact of filtered / corrected degradation data on prediction is discussed in the case of frequent oil top-ups to the system. A perspective-based decision support taxonomy is presented for selection of lubrication oil analysis approach. © 2019 IEEE.

The Industrial Internet of Thing (IIoT) approach to an Industry plant design, devises a comprehensive interconnection of the system components, from sections up to single devices, in order to get a general and punctual understanding of the process. Such an intelligent network, mostly based on Ethernet layers, when properly conceived, should be able to add relevant value to the plant operation. In industrial economy, the more significant implementation of IIoT comes with the Industry 4.0 (I4) principles. This paper shows how, within the I4 and IIoT frame, the plant efficiency can be addressed and bring relevant improvement. The reason is that measured or calculated variables, directly related to the energy consumption, such as current, electric power, actuator and motor torque, speed, etc., can be timely and easily monitored in the entire plant, since they are already conveyed on the communication network, due to real time control and diagnostics purpose. The paper, after a general discussion, proves it with practical examples based on Intralogistics applications: a Gantry robot and the stacker cranes of an automated warehouse, both driven in an EtherCAT based automation network.

Methods for monitoring the technical condition of ultrasound medical equipment for ultrasound physiotherapy, focused ultrasound radiation, extra corporeal lithotripsy and ultrasound diagnostics during its operation are proposed. The application of the proposed methods will significantly improve the safety of the use of ultrasonic medical equipment, as well as improve the quality and effectiveness of treatment with these devices. Besides, the proposed methods are low cost of their application. The proposed methods for monitoring the technical condition of ultrasound medical equipment can be used in remote medical institutions that do not have the ability to periodically calibrate their medical devices. © 2019 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

The recent developments in high-speed laser machining combine high-average power lasers with ultrafast beam deflection systems.(1) However, when using ultrashort pulses at megahertz pulse repetition frequencies the incoming laser beam may interact with the plasma/particle ablation plume that is due to the very short time intervals between the impinging megahertz-repetitive pulses. Thereby, the subsequently irradiated pulses will either be reflected, absorbed and/or scattered by the still existent plasma/particle plume as induced by the previously irradiated pulse(s). This shielding of the incoming laser beam is adversely affecting material ablation and can potentially be avoided when the beam is ultrafast moving in front of the emerging plasma/particle plume. For the real-time analysis of such fairly unknown processing regimes, a pump-probe shadowgraph imaging technique was used to visualize laser materials interaction in high-speed ultrashort pulse laser machining. The pump laser source supplied a beam of lambda = 1030 nm, Tau(H) = 600 fs and 48MHz maximum pulse repetition frequency for material ablation. A diode laser system provided the probe beam of lambda = 688 nm and Tau(H) = 13 ns. The pump and the probe beam could be electronically delayed within a time frame of up to 10.s. Sequences of shadowgraphs will be presented to visualize plasma/ablation plume expansion for providing unique insights into high-pulse repetition frequency ultrashort pulse laser materials interactions at ultrafast laser beam movements above 250m/s. The shadowgraphs reveal that the form of the emerging plasma/particle plumes is influenced by the laser beam moving speed. The plumes vary in their density and structure from clearly distinguishable at highest speed, through smoothly detached to be turbulent. In addition, it is shown on the shadowgraphs material ejection takes place at the time when the ultrafast scanned laser beam moved away from the initial irradiation area.

The results of optical diagnostics of physical processes occurring on the surface of Nickel alloy powder melt in selective laser melting (SLM) technology are presented. The independent registration of the dynamics of the brightness temperature and the fraction of the laser radiation reflected from the surface of the melt was carried out. The dependences of the surface temperature of the melt averaged over the time of observation on the specific volumetric heat input were obtained for the two values of the width of the generated paths. A multiwave method of optical diagnostics is proposed, including monitoring of laser radiation reflected from the melt surface. It is shown that amplitude pulsations of the reflected radiation induced by fluctuations of the relief of the melt surface associated with dynamics of the surface temperature of the melt: the number of ripples on the waveform of the reflected radiation increases at the stages of decline of the brightness temperature. This observed phenomenon shows the relationship between changes in surface topography and convective processes in the melt during laser heating. Analysis of the signals determined by the reflection of laser radiation from the melt surface allows to determine the moments of change in the intensity of heat and mass transfer in a shorter time than when controlling the melt temperature. The results of the study can be used in the development of methods and tools for monitoring and operational control of the SLM process.

The presence of imperfections during 2D materials grown is undesirable for emerging applications for which large-scale production of high purity materials is essential. There is currently no easily applicable, non-invasive, and fast characterization method for determining, with high resolution and sensitivity, changes in crystallographic orientations as well as grain and other extended defect boundaries over a large 2D crystal area. Therefore, there is a need to develop quantitative metrics to quickly evaluate the quality of 2D crystals and provide direct feedback for process control during material growth.

The paper presents practical aspects of insuring the accuracy of manufacturing parts on CNC machine tools operating in "Smart manufacturing". A model is described that reflects quantitative and logical relationships between variables that characterize the state of controlled parameters of technological operations. The concept of preventive maintenance of machine tools based on operational monitoring of their condition is presented. This allows, on the one hand, to avoid unexpected downtime of equipment because of breakdowns. On the other hand, it means a more reasonable approach to planning preventive maintenance of equipment operability. The concept of the information system for the predicted maintenance of process equipment is based on the model of correspondence between the characteristics obtained from external measuring instruments (fixed at the commissioning stage) and measurements obtained from the equipment diagnostics tools, integrated into the control system, during its operation.

Operation and maintenance costs are a major driver for levelized cost of energy of wind power plants and can be reduced through optimized operation and maintenance practices accomplishable by various prognostics and health management (PHM) technologies. In recent years, the wind industry has become more open to adopting PHM solutions, especially those focusing on diagnostics. However, prognostics activities are, in general, still at the research and development stage. On the other hand, the industry has a request to estimate a component's remaining useful life (RUL) when it has faulted, and this is a key output of prognostics. Systematically presenting PHM technologies to the wind industry by highlighting the RUL prediction need potentially helps speed up its acceptance and provides more benefits from PHM to the industry. In this paper, we introduce a PHM for wind framework. It highlights specifics unique to wind turbines and features integration of data and physics domain information and models. The output of the framework focuses on RUL prediction. To demonstrate its application, a data domain method for wind turbine gearbox fault diagnostics is presented. It uses supervisory control and data acquisition system time series data, normalizes gearbox temperature measurements with reference to environmental temperature and turbine power, and leverages big data analytics and machine-learning techniques to make the model scalable and the diagnostics process automatic. Another physics-domain modeling method for RUL prediction of wind turbine gearbox high-speed-stage bearings failed by axial cracks is also discussed. Bearing axial cracking has been shown to be the prevalent wind turbine gearbox failure mode experienced in the field and is different from rolling contact fatigue, which is targeted during the bearing design stage. The method uses probability of failure as a component reliability assessment and RUL prediction metric, which can be expanded to other drivetrain
