In industrial high power laser welding and cutting applications there is an increasing need for high-speed process monitoring and control to meet industry demands on increased productivity, quality, traceability and reproductivity as Industry 4.0 standards are adapted. The latest generation of Coherent's QD Fiber Optic Cables has the option for integrated process monitoring sensors and functions inside of the fiber cable connector (SmartQD). This provides a compact process monitoring solution, with no need for installation of additional equipment, where the sensors come pre-aligned out of the box for monitoring parallel to the optical axis. The water-cooled QD fiber connector provides protection from the industrial environment and keeps the sensors at a defined temperature. With carefully selected and developed optics and electronics the sensors inside the SmartQD connector captures process light at three different wavelength ranges: back-reflected laser light, near infrared (1200 - 1600 nm) and visible (300 - 700 nm). The SmartQD sensors have a maximum bandwidth of 500 kHz, > 12 ENOB. The connector itself is equipped with an industrial electrical connector with either analog or digital data interface. The process data is then evaluated with an external program. In this paper we present welding result on various materials, such as aluminum and mild steel using the SmartQD fiber cable. We present results on detecting weld defects and imperfections caused by for example loss of focal position, misalignment, and material surface defects. Defects and imperfections that are resolved include lack of penetration, incomplete fusion, spattering, undercut, and blow-out.

It becomes clearer and clearer that there is more than a gradual transition in automotive industry, especially when it comes to the future propulsion systems. Whether we talk about e-mobility or hydrogen drive, laser and photonics industry take the chance to transform manufacturing processes, convince decision makes on the undoubted advantages of photonic tools in the relevant production chains. As most of the applications e.g., in e-mobility start from scratch one can directly use the most profitable manufacturing tools. There is no need to transform an already existing process from the "pre laser age" into modern times. This paper reviews some of the applications in battery production from the perspective of a supplier of sensor technology and processing tools, without claim of completeness. The focus will concentrate on laser welding as here process monitoring and control plays an important role, laser marking, drilling, surface processing will not be part of the deliberations. This contribution to the Photonics West '22 LASE conference describes the intersection between photonics and demands when it comes to efficient production tools for tomorrow's mobility. Further intersections with respect to Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence haven't even been mentioned, but here we easily find more examples which underscore the uniqueness of the laser in the context of e-mobility.

This study presents a portable device integrating a micro-spectrometer, stepper motor, and position sensor controlled by a Raspberry Pi for rapid and high-resolution chromatographic analysis. Utilizing continuous spectral detection, the system monitors intensity fluctuations across characteristic wavelengths, with a detection time of approximately 30 seconds. Spectral data normalization against a white reference spectrum ensures precise tracking of reflectance changes at specific wavelengths. Validation on red and blue printed test papers confirmed the device's accuracy, and further tests with mixed chemical reagents demonstrated its ability to simultaneously measure reflectance intensity changes at multiple wavelengths. This method provides comprehensive insights into chromatographic separations, highlighting its potential for various analytical applications in environmental monitoring and healthcare diagnostics.

The global demand for air travel and air transport is expected to increase again in the next couple of years and so the environmental protection will also increasingly come into focus again. In the aviation sector, this means not only saving fuel and reducing emissions but also reducing the noise pollution caused by aircrafts. A typical method for noise reduction is the use of acoustic liners for sound insulation. Among different designs, acoustic liners can consist of sandwich panels, with one perforated, micro-drilled skin layer, a honeycomb structure and a closed rear layer. Wherever the operating conditions allow, the skin layers are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), due to weight reasons. Compared to conventional drilling methods for CFRP, laser drilling offers unique benefits such as significantly smaller achievable bore diameters, wear free cutting and flexibility in bore diameter. However, for a large-scale application of laser micro drilling, the process efficiency must be increased and a processcontrol is necessary to avoid damage due to excessive heat input. In this investigation, a processcontrol method based on thermography is presented and evaluated. The control mechanism uses the temperature course in the drilling area to decide whether the process can be terminated in order to avoid time losses and unnecessary heat input. This method was found to be very reliable, however, the synchronization between temperature recording and laser irradiation and the data interpretation need further improvement.

Alignments provide sophisticated diagnostics that pinpoint deviations in a trace with respect to a process model. One crucial aspect is to consider, in the alignment task, not only the control flow perspective but also other sources of information available in event logs like data pay-loads. However, the combination of these dimensions makes the problem of multi-perspective trace alignment highly challenging since the number of traces accepted by the model is typically infinite. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing an approximate approach to alignment computation: instead of computing the optimal alignments based on the complete knowledge about a process trace available in the log, we perform approximate alignments based on lossy trace encodings that only consider certain information about the trace. The advantage of this approach is twofold. First, the trace alignment task is much faster. Second, the analyst can choose what type of information is relevant for computing the alignments by selecting the encodings that represent a trace based on that information. Our experiments show that the approximate approach is faster than the optimal one and, for encodings sufficiently rich, able to provide accurate results.
