In this paper, we introduce the 2-D continuous wavelet transform (CWT) as a tool for the detection stages of an SAR ATR system. We demonstrate that the 2-D CWT tuned to reasonable target sixes can enhance the signal to clutter ratio (SCR) and improve detection performance in a focus of attention (FOA) algorithm as compared to the traditional CFAR algorithm. We also show that the 2-D CWT can be used to estimate the sire and pose of a target, which can provide important features for second level detection. The detection and feature extraction algorithms were tested on measured one foot resolution SAR data.

A method to automatically detect targets from sets of pixel-registered visual. thermal, and range (VTR) images is outlined. It uses operations specifically designed to work on the different kinds of images to explote the information given by each of them. Five features are used to distinguish the targets from the clutter: texture, brightness, temperature, surface planarity, and height. We describe two different schemes. The first one involves logically combining the results of individual detectors with binary detection information as output. A morphological operation called ''erosion of strength n'' is introduced and utilized as a powerful tool for removal of spurious information. The second scheme utilizes the concept of ''images of interest'' to combine the information provided by the different images. A simple linear combination of these images yields excellent detection results. The success of this scheme supports its suitability for other ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) problems.

Due to recent development of the theory related to non-uniform Pulse Repetition Intervals (PRI) for pulse doppler radars, it has become feasible to combine the multiple pulse integration of Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) with the temporal agility of non-uniform PRI's. This combination can bring to the traditional SAR system the benefits of both strong resistance to countermeasures and interception, and high sensitivity. A significant problem which much be addressed in synthetic aperture radars is the possible smearing of the azimuth dimension of the image due to doppler sidelobes which are too high. This issue is even more serious with a non-uniform PRI waveform. In a traditional SAR the sidelobes are controlled with signal processing techniques such as amplitude weighting. However, these simpler techniques are not adequate for non-uniform PRI waveforms, One method for increasing the sidelobe rejection capability of these waveforms requires the use of a processor which consists of time varying linear digital filters. One way to design such a filter is through the use of interpolation based techniques.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is becoming an increasingly useful tool for road subsurface characterization. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has recently obtained a new 1 GHz ground penetrating radar with the ability to make high resolution measurements. Depth profile scan rates of the new radar are about 50 scan/sec and the radar operates on a test van travelling at speeds up to 50-55 MPH. The time domain data collected by the GPR allow the determination of thickness of the road surface and subsurface layers and, with appropriate signal processing, the data can provide information about voids and other anomalies within road layer interfaces. This paper will describe the salient features of the Florida DOT ground penetrating radar, recent measurement results, and applications of GPR for road assessments. It will also describe preliminary results of a University of Florida project which is employing advanced signal processing techniques to detect and classify subsurface anomalies in road layers. As a precursor to anomaly detection we are developing improved techniques for Finding road layer thicknesses and dielectric constants, The processing techniques being developed include matched filter and slope detection algorithms. A goal of the current work is to develop signal processing techniques that will allow FDOT to evaluate subsurface conditions for large sections of roads throughout Florida in a more accurate and rapid manner. It is expected that the GPR and the results of current research will assist the FDOT in more accurately determining road layer thickness profiles, in assessing road subsurface conditions with less coring, and aid in rehabilitating roads with less manpower than is now required, Such capabilities will allow potentially serious problems to be corrected before they become costly and will also provide a useful tool for future road design and improvement.

There is an increasing interest in millimeter-wave radar sensors for automotive applications, passenger-comfort traffic-safety will be the main distinctive feature for car manufacturers in markets. radar systems at millimeter-wave frequencies allow small antennas with high resolution well into the front of a passenger car. Over and above radar sensors for automotive applications autonomous intelligent cruise control and collision avoidance radar open up a relevant volume market millimeter-wave technology. In this paper the concept of an automotive imaging radar will be The sensor is a fully polarimetric, coherent 76 GHz radar having an electronically obtained resolution based on a focal plane array concept. Using advanced GaAs-based circuits all the blocks necessary for the realization of the radar have been designed, assembled, and tested. the modules and the obtained results as well as the integration of the complete radar sensor will described. A sequence of radar images of traffic scenarios has been measured and processed with developed algorithms.

For the survey and inspection of environmental objects, a non-tactile, robust and precise imaging of height and depth is tie basis sensor technology. For visual inspection, surface classification, and documentation purposes, however, additional information concerning reflectance of measured objects is necessary. High-speed acquisition of both geometric and visual information is achieved by means of an active laser radar, supporting consistent 3D height-(i.e. range) and 2D reflectance images. The laser radar is an optical-wavelength system, and is comparable to devices built by Erim, Odetics, and Perceptron, measuring the range between sensor and target surface as well as the reflectance of the target surface, which corresponds to the magnitude of the back scattered laser energy. In contrast to these range sensing devices, the laser radar under consideration is designed for high speed and precise operation in both indoor and outdoor environments, emitting a minimum of near-infrared laser energy. It integrates a laser range measurement system and a mechanical deflection system for 3D environmental measurements, This payer reports on design details of the laser radar for surface inspection tasks. It outlines the performance requirements and introduces the measurement principle. The hardware design, including the main modules, such as he laser head, tile high frequency unit, the laser beam deflection system, and the digital signal processing unit are discussed. The signal processing unit consists of dedicated signal processors for real-time sensor data preprocessing as well as st sensor computer for high-level image analysis and feature extraction. The paper focuses on performance data of the system, including noise, drift over time, precision, and accuracy with measurements. Inverse-Synthetic Aperture radar (ISAR) processing algorithms require an explicit or implicit model of the motion of the target, since this information is not measurable at the sensor. A major unsolved problem is whether it is better to develop a deterministic model of the motion or to fit the observations to a mathematical model which may be ambiguous with a wide range of physical target motions. This question is particularly important for the imaging of small targets in ground clutter since the available information on the target motion may be very limited. By contrast, the imaging of large ships in sea clutter yields a wealth of information of the motion of the body. This paper explores the effectiveness of models of the second kind by testing a set of motion estimation algorithms against motor vehicle targets imaged by a high-frequency SAR at long range and low grazing angle. The algorithms attempt to estimate the bulk motion of the vehicle and its rotation about its mean position by fitting many small pieces of information gathered from low quality or short duration scatterers detected in either the raw range-compressed signal history or in the complex image. In forming the motion model, the algorithm avoids undue reliance on particular bright or narrow-Doppler targets in favor of a global fit to many partially resolved or glinting features. The algorithm is demonstrated for 0.3 meter resolution SAR data of a Winnebago van from a Ku-band radar.

There is an increasing interest in imaging radar systems operating at low frequencies. Examples of military and civilian applications are detection of stealth-designed man- made objects, targets hidden under foliage, biomass estimation, and penetration into glaciers or ground. The developed CARABAS technology is a contribution to this field of low frequency SAR imagery. The used wavelengths offer a potential of penetration below the upper scattering layer in combination with high spatial resolution. The first prototype of the system (CARABAS I) has been tested in environments ranging from rain forests to deserts, collecting a considerably amount of data often in parallel with other SAR sensors. The work on data analysis proceeds and results obtained so far seem promising, especially for application in forested regions. The experiences gained are used in the development of a new upgraded system (CARABAS ii), which is near completion and initial airborne radar tests for system verifications followed by some major field campaign are scheduled to take place during 1996. This paper will summarize the CARABAS I system characteristics and system performance evaluation. The major imperfections discovered in the radar functioning will be identified, and we explain some of the modification made in the system design for CARABAS ii. A new algorithm for future real-time CARABAS data processing has been derived, with a structure well-suited for a multi-processor environment. Motion compensation and radio frequency interference mitigation are both included in this scheme. Some comments on low frequency SAR operation at UHF-based versus VHF-band will be given.

This paper presents a discussion on the feasibility and usefulness of data fusion applied to a suite of dissimilar sensors. This suite comprises surveillance radar, forward looking infrared (FLIR), electronic support measurement (ESM), a synthetic aperture radar (SAR), acoustic sensors and a data link (LINK 11). An analysis of applicable sensor fusion processes is presented followed by a discussion on the expected performance improvements. Finally, a three step incremental approach is proposed with recoverable steps where different level of fusion sophistication can be implemented based on the availability of the technology and the actual status of the sensors.

During the fifty years since its initial development as a means of providing early warning of airborne attacks against allied countries during World War ii, radar systems have developed to the point of being highly mobile and versatile systems capable of supporting a wide variety of remote sensing applications. Instead of being tied to stationary land-based sites, radar systems have found their way into highly mobile land vehicles as well as into aircraft, missiles, and ships of all sizes. Of all these applications, however, the most exciting revolution has occurred in the airborne platform arena where advanced technology radars can be found in all shapes and sizes...ranging from the large AWACS and Joint STARS long range surveillance and targeting systems to small millimeter wave multi-spectral sensors on smart weapons that can detect and identify their targets through the use of highly sophisticated digital signal processing hardware and software. This paper presents an overview of these radar applications with the emphasis on modern airborne sensors that span the RF spectrum. It will identify and describe the factors that influence the parameters of low frequency and ultra wide band radars designed to penetrate ground and dense foliage environments and locate within them buried mines, enemy armor, and other concealed or camouflaged weapons of war. It will similarly examine the factors that lead to the development of airborne radar systems that support long range extended endurance airborne surveillance platforms designed to detect and precision-located both small high speed airborne threats as well as highly mobile time critical moving and stationary surface vehicles. The mission needs and associated radar design impacts will be contrasted with those of radar systems designed for high maneuverability rapid acquisition tactical strike warfare platforms, and shorter range cued air-to-surface weapons with integral smart radar sensors.
