The focus of this paper is to describe several recent applications of multi-platform Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) tracking technology for surveillance and reconnaissance coalition environments. As part of the U.S. Air Force's 1999 Joint Expeditionary Force Experiment (JEFX), we demonstrated (in stand-alone mode) GMTI tracking technology for a simulated ground target scenario consisting of 20,000+ military and civilian ground vehicles and GMTI sensor data based on multiple U.S. and coalition radar simulators (i.e.. U.S. Joint STARS and Global Hawk, U.K. ASTOR, French HORIZON, Italy CRESO). As part of ATO's Joint Project Optic Windmill (JPOW) V / Clean Hunter 2000 (CN00), we demonstrated the real-time operation of GMTI tracking technology in a live military coalition exercise environment. Two such systems were supported at JPOW V / CN00: (i) an on-board system consisting of the GMTI tracker ported to a DEC ALPHA on the Navy's P3 APY-6 platform, and used by operators to track ground targets based on GMTI data produced by the APY-6 radar system alone, and (ii) an off-board system consisting of the GMTI tracker ported to a Sun Quad Ultra 80 at NATO HQ AIRNORTH at Ramstein AFB Germany, and used to track ground targets based on real GMTI data produced by both the P3 APY-6 and the French HORIZON. In addition, simulated GMTI data from the JSTARS, Global Hawk, and ASTOR radar simulators was also produced and tracked based on a simulated ground target scenario consisting of 30,000+ military and civilian ground vehicles.

In Urban Air Mobility, the approach and landing procedure of Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft is recognized as a critical phase which needs innovative solutions to guarantee reliable operations. This paper focuses on validating an onboard multi-sensor architecture including a Frequency-Modulated-Continuous-Wave radar system, two cameras, a Global Navigation Satellite System receiver and an Inertial Measurement Unit. Data from exteroceptive sensors are processed to detect and identify ad-hoc designed keypoints in the landing area. In this framework, the paper discusses radar processing algorithms designed to detect and match the ground reflectors used as navigation aids. The resulting measurements are integrated in an Extended Kalman Filter. A physics-based simulation environment is adopted to realistically simulate the sensor data used to test performance of the navigation filter. Finally, an helicopter flight test campaign is presented with the aim to validate the simulation results on real flight data. © 2024 IEEE.

To allow Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) accessing National Airspace System (NAS) "Equivalent levels of safety" to the ones of human vision must be guaranteed. Therefore, an appropriate "Sense and Avoid" technology must be developed that is capable of detecting, tracking, and avoiding obstacles. The Department of Aerospace Engineering at University of Naples has been involved in a project funded by the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA) for the realization of a prototypical "Obstacle Detection & Identification" (ODID) System. It is installed onboard a Very Light Aircraft (VLA) and it is characterized by a hierarchical sensor configuration in which the radar is the main sensor while EO cameras are the auxiliary ones in order to increase accuracy and data rate so that anti-collision requirements are fulfilled. This paper focuses on the Image Processing algorithm for the panchromatic camera. Among the several techniques listed in literature the edge detection - labeling one resulted as the best compromise in terms of computational load, detection range, false alarm rate, miss detection rate and adaptability at different background luminosity conditions. Moreover it has been customized in order to allow for reliable operation in a wide range of flight and luminance configurations and it has been tested and run on a sequence of real images taken during flight tests. At the end, a table that summarizes those results is presented. Indeed, the output tracking measurements accuracy increases by an order of magnitude with respect to standalone radar one.

Here, the authors analyse a two-step constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection problem in distributed sensor system (e.g. statistical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar) for fast-fluctuating targets (TS-AMF-ii). The scheme arises when a data rate restriction forces each of the distributed systems to censor their detection statistics before sharing and is motivated by the fact that the clutter plus noise power and the signal to clutter plus noise ratio may be both unknown in practice. The proposed detector has two thresholds: the first one called local threshold controls the communication rate and the second one called global threshold adjusts the global probability of false alarm. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed detector has good detection performance at a low communication rate. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and technology. All rights reserved.

We present an improved statistical model of the measurement process of triangulation Light Detection and Rangings (Lidars) that takes into account bias and variance effects coming from two different sources of uncertainty: (i)mechanical imperfections on the geometry and properties of their pinhole lens - CCD camera systems, and (ii) inaccuracies in the measurement of the angular displacement of the sensor due to non ideal measurements from the internal encoder of the sensor. This model extends thus the one presented in [2] by adding this second source of errors. Besides proposing the statistical model, this chapter considers: (i) specialized and dedicated model calibration algorithms that exploit Maximum Likelihood (ML)/Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) concepts and that use training datasets collected in a controlled setup, and (ii) tailored statistical strategies that use the calibration results to statistically process the raw sensor measurements in non controlled but structured environments where there is a high chance for the sensor to be detecting objects with flat surfaces (e.g., walls). These newly proposed algorithms are thus specially designed and optimized for inferring precisely the angular orientation of the Lidar sensor with respect to the detected object, a feature that is beneficial especially for indoor navigation purposes. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

The rapid advancement of radio-frequency (RF), infrared, and optical technologies has enabled many wireless-sensing approaches for novel biomedical applications, such as implantable medical devices, characterization of biological materials, wireless neural prostheses, non-contact health monitoring, and remote-human-motion classification. Some applications entered human daily life shortly after their invention, significantly improving the productivity and life quality in our society. Some emerging applications have shown great potential to benefit the wellbeing of humans but are still under development to overcome technical challenges and incorporate human-factor considerations. With solutions ranging from sensor-on-chip to bench top systems, biomedical wireless sensing has drawn enormous interests from researchers and practitioners in private organizations, academic institutions, and industrial research centers.

A cockpit revolution is in the making. Many of the much ballyhooed, much promised, but little delivered technologies of the 70's and 80's will finally come of age in the 90's just in time to complement the data explosion coming from sensor and processing advances. Technologies such as helmet systems, large flat panel displays, speech recognition, color graphics, decision aiding and stereopsis, are simultaneously reaching technology maturities that promise big payoffs for the third generation cockpit and beyond. The first generation cockpit used round dials to help the pilot keep the airplane flying right side up. The second generation cockpit used Multifunction Displays and the HUD to interface the pilot with sensors and weapons. What might the third generation cockpit look like? How might it integrate many of these technologies to simplify the pilots life and most of all: what is the payoff? This paper will examine tactical cockpit problems, the technologies needed to solve them and recommend three generations of solutions.

The development of new sensing abilities, such as hyperspectral sensors, small man-portable infrared sensors, battlefield radars and faster AI-based data processing requires new capabilities in camouflage materials. Military systems also have to work in changing environments, which calls for adaptivity. ACAMSii is an EU-funded project within the Preparatory Action for Defence Research (PADR) programme under grant agreement No 800871. Scientists from Sweden, Germany, Portugal, France, Lithuania and the Netherlands cooperate in the project. ACAMSii conducts applied research on improved adaptive camouflage for the soldier, with the purpose to provide increased survivability in diversified environments. The ACAMSii multifunctional camouflage demonstrator consists of three main parts: IR adaptivity realized by integrating phase changing and low emissivity materials in the printed camouflage patterned textile. Adaption to background colours and lighting conditions in the visible range, managed by operating and driving light emitting diodes (LEDs) embedded in a panel of clothing textile material. The LEDs are controlled by a camera and a light sensor placed in the back. Thermochromic materials provide further adaptation. Microwave shielding using woven fabric coated with absorbing materials to reduce the radar signature. For a soldier combat system, not only camouflage properties are of importance. The comfort properties of the system are also evaluated. This paper emphasizes military needs (top-down or market pull), scientific aspects and technical readiness level of available technology and materials (bottom-up or technology push), on how to build a consortium in an international collaboration during a pandemic. The concept of the EDA Overarching Strategic Research Agenda has been introduced and the project's relation to this concept has been explained. This study considers censoring outliers in a radar scenario with limited sample support. The problem is formulated as obtaining the regularised maximum likelihood (RML) estimate of the outlier index set. Since the RML estimate involves solving a combinatorial optimisation problem, a reduced complexity but approximate RML (ARML) procedure is also devised. As to the selection of the regularisation parameter, the cross-validation technique is exploited. At the analysis stage, the performance of the RML/ARML procedure is evaluated based both on simulated and challenging knowledge-aided sensor signal processing and expert reasoning data, also in comparison with some other outlier excision methods available in the open literature. The numerical results highlight that the RML/ARML algorithm achieves a satisfactory performance level in the presence of limited as well as sufficient sample supports whereas the other counterparts often experience a certain performance degradation for the insufficient training volume. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and technology.
