The performance of different random array geometries is analyzed and compared. Three phased array geometries are considered: linear arrays with non-uniform randomized spacing between elements, circular arrays with non-uniform element radii, and ad hoc sensor networks with elements located randomly within a circular area. For each of these array geometries, computer simulations modeled the transmission, reflection from an arbitrary target, and reception of signals. The effectiveness of each array's beamforming techniques was measured by taking the peak cross-correlation between the received signal and a time-delayed replica of the original transmitted signal. For each array type, the correlation performance was obtained for transmission and reception of both chirp waveforms and ultra-wideband noise signals. It was found that the non-uniform linear array generally produced the highest correlation between transmitted and reflected signals. The non-uniform circular and ad hoc arrays demonstrated the most consistent performance with respect to noise signal bandwidth. The effect of scan angle was found to have a significant impact on the correlation performance of the linear arrays, where the correlation performance declines as the scan angle moves away from broadside to the array.

The Spectral Analysis Solution (SAS), under development, is a multichannel superheterodyne signal analyzer with the intended applications of radio frequency (RF) research, radar verification, and general purpose spectrum sensing, primarily in the ultra-wideband (UWB) range from ultra high frequency (UHF) to the S-band. The SAS features a wideband channel operating from 100 kHz to 1.8 GHz and eight narrowband channels having adjustable instantaneous bandwidths ranging from 1 MHz to 100 MHz. The wideband channel provides a large picture of the RF spectrum while the narrowband channels allow for high resolution, low noise floor, and high spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) capabilities. An adaptive graphic user interface (GUI) has been implemented for the system that actively pulls and processes the system data in real time. This paper outlines the motivation and theory behind the system along with system validation and implementation results.

Targeting systems are subject to multiple sources of error when operating in complex environments. To reduce the effect of these errors, modern targeting systems generally include both imaging and RF sensors. Data processing then provides target detection and classification information, and the detection streams are combined using a data fusion scheme to produce an optimal target location estimate with an associated latency. In this paper, the performance of a multi- sensor system in a maritime application is investigated using a mathematical simulator that has been developed to provide the system performance error analysis for different engagement scenarios and test conditions. This simulator is described together with the sources of targeting error such as image motion blur and radar glint. Additionally, the impact of flare and chaff countermeasures on the targeting performance is reviewed in terms of different types of target recognition and tracking algorithms.

We present analysis of a radar detection technique using a Photon Addition Homodyne Receiver (PAHR) that improves SNR of the interferometer fringes and reduces uncertainty of the phase measurement. This system uses the concept of Photon Addition (PA) in which the coherent photon distribution is altered. We discuss this process first as a purely mathematical concept to introduce PA and illustrate its effect on coherent photon distribution. We then present a notional proof-of-concept experiment involving a parametric down converter (PDC) and probabilistic post-selection of the results. We end with presentation of a more deterministic PAHR concept that is more suitable for development into a working system. Coherent light illuminates a target and the return signal interferes with the local oscillator reference photons to create the desired fringes. The PAHR alters the photon probability distribution of the returned light via interaction between the return photons and atoms. We refer to this technique as "Atom Interaction" or AI. The returning photons are focused at the properly prepared atomic system. The injected atoms into this region are prepared in the desired quantum state. During the interaction time, the initial quantum state evolves in such a way that the photon distribution function changes resulting in higher photon count, lower phase noise and an increase in fringe SNR. The result is a 3-5X increase of fringe SNR. This method is best suited for low light intensity (low photon count, 0.1-5) applications. The detection protocol could extend the range of existing systems without loss of accuracy, or conversely enhance a system's accuracy for given range. We present quantum mathematical analysis of the method to illustrate how both range and angular resolution improve in comparison with standard measurement techniques. We also suggest an experimental path to validate the method which also will lead toward deployment in the field.

Some results from a low light trial in Porton Down UK are described. The purpose was to compare imaging performance for active and passive sensors in the visible, NIR, SWIR, MWIR and LWIR bands concerning detection and identification of humans carrying certain handheld objects and performing associated activities. This paper will concentrate on results from active and passive NIR and SWIR only. Both NIR and SWIR sensors provided passive imagery down to illumination levels between 1-10 lux corresponding to sunset-overcast to moonlight. The active mode gave usable imagery out to 2-3 km at much lower light levels. NIR and SWIR sensor images are compared concerning target to background contrast, cloth recognition and the detection of humans, activities and handheld objects. The target to background contrast was often somewhat better in the SWIR as compared with the NIR wavelength region. The contrast between different types of clothing was in general more discriminative in the NIR vs the SWIR. This was especially true for the active sensing modes. The recognition of large weapons could be done out to 600-1000 m range and handguns out to the 300-600 meter range. We found that activities could be detected and recognized out to 1400 m at least, but depends on the contrast between the person the background.

This paper reviews a simple solution to the continuous-discrete Bayesian nonlinear state estimation problem that has been proposed recently. The key ideas are analytic noise processes, variational Bayes, and the formulation of the problem in terms of generalized coordinates of motion. Some of the algorithms, specifically dynamic expectation maximization and variational filtering, have been shown to outperform existing approaches like extended Kalman filtering and particle filtering. A pedagogical review of the theoretical formulation is presented, with an emphasis on concepts that are not as widely known in the filtering literature. We illustrate the appliction of these concepts using a numerical example.

NASA has been pursuing flash lidar technology for autonomous, safe landing on solar system bodies and for automated rendezvous and docking. During the final stages of landing, from about 1 km to 500 m above the ground, the flash lidar can generate 3-Dimensional images of the terrain to identify hazardous features such as craters, rocks, and steep slopes. The onboard flight computer can then use the 3-D map of terrain to guide the vehicle to a safe location. As an automated rendezvous and docking sensor, the flash lidar can provide relative range, velocity, and bearing from an approaching spacecraft to another spacecraft or a space station. NASA Langley Research Center has developed and demonstrated a flash lidar sensor system capable of generating 16k pixels range images with 7 cm precision, at a 20 Hz frame rate, from a maximum slant range of 1800 m from the target area. This paper describes the lidar instrument and presents the results of recent flight tests onboard a rocket-propelled free-flyer vehicle (Morpheus) built by NASA Johnson Space Center. The flights were conducted at a simulated lunar terrain site, consisting of realistic hazard features and designated landing areas, built at NASA Kennedy Space Center specifically for this demonstration test. This paper also provides an overview of the plan for continued advancement of the flash lidar technology aimed at enhancing its performance to meet both landing and automated rendezvous and docking applications.

It has been demonstrated that the instantaneous acceleration associated with vibrating objects that are directly imaged by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can be estimated through the application of the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFrFT) using the information contained in the complex SAR image. In general, vibration signatures may include, for example, the number of chirped sinusoids as well as their respective base frequencies and chirp rates. By further processing the DFrFT-processed data for clutter-noise rejection by means of pseudo subspace methods, has been shown that the SAR-vibrometry method can be reliable as long as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) of the slow-time SAR signal at the range-line of interest exceeds 15dB. Meanwhile, the Nyquist theorem dictates that the maximum measurable vibration frequency is limited by half of the pulse-repetition frequency. This paper focuses on the detection and estimation of vibrations generated by machinery concealed within buildings and other structures. This is a challenging task in general because the vibration signatures of the source are typically altered by their housing structure;moreover, the SNR at the surface of the housing structure tends to be reduced. Here, experimental results for three different vibrating targets, including one concealed target, are reported using complex SAR images acquired by the General Atomics Lynx radar at resolutions of 1-ft and 4-in. The concealed vibrating target is actuated by a gear motor with an off-balance weight attached to it, which is enclosed by a wooden housing. The vibrations of the motor are transmitted to a chimney that extends above the housing structure. Using the SAR vibrometry approach, it is shown that it is possible to distinguish among the three vibrating objects based upon their vibration signatures.

Urban flooding is a significant catastrophe due to its widespread impact on the population. Typically, floods occur concurrently with heavy rainfall, rendering the affected area obscured by clouds when observed through optical sensors on satellites. A novel approach is proposed in this study to address this issue, aiming to classify flooded urban areas using a remote sensing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor on a satellite. Unlike optical sensors, SAR can penetrate clouds. The framework was developed using the 3D convolutional neural network (3DCNN) method to preserve the temporal variability, which processed multi-temporal SAR data from Sentinel-1 (S-1). The dataset used in this research comprised 24 S-1 scenes covering Jakarta Province, Indonesia, with Dual VV and VH polarization, between March 2019 and February 2020, divided into two co-event images, 18 pre-event images, and four post-event images. We employed hyper-parameters of 150 epochs, a batch size of 100, and a learning rate of 0.001, with a training/testing data split of 80/20 in the training phase. The 3DCNN achieved an average overall accuracy of 70.3%, with a maximum accuracy of 71.4%, and each epoch took 113 seconds on average to process. These results demonstrate the potential of the 3DCNN method to accurately estimate the extent of flooding and identify areas at risk of flooding, thereby aiding early detection and flood prevention efforts in other urban areas in the future. ©2023 IEEE.

COSMO SkyMed is the largest Italian investment in Space Systems for Earth Observation, commissioned and funded by Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Italian Ministry of Defense (MoD). The system, currently in production phase, consists of a constellation of Low Earth Orbit mid-sized satellites, each carrying a multi-mode high resolution Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) instrument operating at X-band and a full featured Global Ground Segment to properly exploit space capabilities. Primary COSMO-SkyMed system mission objective is the provision of services able to quickly answer to the user needs in the following domain: · Land Monitoring for Territory Risk Management · Territory Strategic Surveillance for Intelligence and Homeland Security · Specific Defense purposes · Management of environmental resources, maritime and shoreline control and law enforcement, · Topography, · Scientific applications of Institutional entities and academics, · Commercial organizations. COSMO-SkyMed has been conceived to cope with dual-use needs, international partnerships, and integration of the system itself into a multi-mission framework of cooperating multi-sensor systems. COSMO-SkyMed is therefore a highly innovative system, presenting cutting-edge multi-mission and multi-sensor capabilities implemented through its Interoperability, Expandability, and Multi-Mission design features (IEM) and operational practices. The benefits of such capabilities are shown, in terms of both costs and user-friendliness, through actual cases which ASI is currently carrying on in international cooperation programs such as ORFEO (Optical and radar Federation for Earth Observation) with French Government, and SIASGE (Italian- Argentinean Satellite System for Emergency Management) with Argentinean Government.
