Current minefield detection research indicates that operationally no single sensor technology will likely be capable of detecting mines/minefields in a real-time manner and at a performance level suitable for a forward maneuver unit. Minefield detection involves a particularly wide range of operating scenarios and environmental conditions, which requires deployment of complementary sensor suites, We have focused, therefore, on the development of a computationally efficient and robust detection algorithm that exploits robust image processing techniques centered on meaningful target feature sets applicable to a variety of imaging sensors. This paper presents the detection technique, emphasizing its robust architecture, and provides performance results for image data generated by complementary sensors. The paper also briefly discusses the application of this detector as a component of fusion architectures for processing returns from diverse imaging sensors, including multichannel image data from disparate sensors.

Military aircraft are increasingly dependent on the use of installed RF and Electro-optical sensor systems and their data correlation/fusion to contend with the increasing demands and complexities of multi-mission air warfare. Therefore, simultaneous, and correlated, ground-based T&E of multiple installed RF and Electro-optical (EO) sensors and avionics systems/subsystems is used to optimize the use of scarce flight testing resources while also satisfying increasingly sophisticated test requirements. Accordingly, it is now an accepted, and highly cost-effective practice, to first conduct rigorous ground testing and evaluation (T&E) of the installed/integrated sensors' performance and their interaction using high fidelity modeling and simulation with real time scene rendering. Accordingly, valid ground-based T&E of installed multi-spectral (RF, IR, Visible) sensors requires that the simulations' spatial, spectral and temporal components be of sufficient fidelity and correlation to produce sensor responses that are indistinguishable from responses to "real-world" conditions. This paper discusses accomplishment of the foregoing goals, and fidelity challenges through innovative utilization of High Performance Computing (HPC) parallelization, visualization, shared memory optimization and scalability for multi-spectral modeling, simulation and real time rendering.

The Close-In Detector (CID) is the vehicle-mounted multi-sensor anti-tank landmine detection technology for the Army CECOM Night Vision Electronic sensors Directorate (NVESD) Mine Hunter-Killer (MH/K) Program. The CID includes two down-looking sensor arrays: a 20-antenna ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and a 16-coil metal detector (MD). These arrays span 3-meters in front of a high mobility, multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV). The CID also includes a roof-mounted, forward looking infrared (FLIR) camera that images a trapezoidal area of the road ahead of the vehicle. Signals from each of the three sensors are processed separately to detect and localize objects of interest. Features of candidate objects are integrated in a processor that uses them to discriminates between anti-tank (AT) mines and clutter and produces a list of suspected mine locations which are passed to the neutralization subsystem of MH/K. This paper reviews the current design and performance of the CID based on field test results on dirt and gravel mine test lanes. Improvements in CID performance for probability of detection, false alarm rate, target positional accuracy and system rate of advance over the past year and a half that meet most of the program goals are described. sensor performances are compared, and the effectiveness of six different sensor fusion approaches are measured and compared.

Describes an algorithm for fusion of tracks created by two kinds of sensor (radar and IR), these measurement data are obtained with different dimensions and different sample rates. By means of the time matching technique, two asynchronous data are fused and then the filter is updated according to the fused information. The rotation Kalman filter algorithm for data fusion is discussed; this approach can effectively solve the problem of nonlinear measurement and reduce the load of calculation.

The paper describes the design of a multi-sensor ultra wideband GPR front-end suitable for subsurface imaging with resolution sufficient for antipersonnel mine recognition. The front-end comprises two sensors: a multi-static video impulse radar and a bistatic stepped-frequency continuous wave radar. In comparison with commercially available video impulse GPR systems the key advantages of the video impulse system are considerably larger bandwidth, high precision of measurements of scattered field, ability to measure polarimetric structure of the scattered field and high pulse repetition rate resulting in fast data acquistion. The principal advantage of the stepped-frequency continuous wave sensor over its predecessors is very short data acquisition time, which is comparable with that of video impulse radars.

For cyclostationary signals, a generalized sensor array data model is presented and a new angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation method based on weighted cyclic spectrum - GSC-SSF is developed in this paper. The proposed algorithm is more convenient and effective in forming the data matrix or the covariance. matrix for the MUSIC or ESPRIT algorithm to estimate AOA and suppress noise. Simulation results show better performance for the new method.

This paper describes a sensor that provides the combination of obstacle detection, air data and wind velocity. This laser-based sensor, the Multi-Mode InfraRed radar (MMIRR), has been under development for two years. An early prototype test flown in an Army helicopter in December 1999 validated the ability of the underlying technology to detect wires and measure True Airspeed (TAS) and wind velocity. This paper discusses: the results of the first demonstration flight; the technology program that reduced the technical risks in the laser, optics, scanner and signal processing areas; the technical hurdles, the tradeoffs and the resulting improvements in sensor performance; the results of tests of the improved MMIRR model that had a finer range resolution, wider field of view and an attitude-stabilized scanner. The projected performance and physical characteristics of a producible and affordable MMIRR product capable of providing obstacle detection and air data to helicopter pilots in the near future is provided.

An investigation of FOPEN target discrimination performance is summarized using UHF SAR data gathered at Grayling, MI by the USA Navy's P-3 SAR sensor. The fully polarimetric data are processed using polarimetric whitening; superresolution processing is then applied to enhance the resolution of the whitened data. Several superresolution approaches are investigated and target discrimination performance achieved using superresolution processing is quantified. Discriminator ROC curves showing probability of detection versus probability of false alarm are used to compare performance; an eigenvector-based superresolution approach is shown to provide the best performance improvement.

In order to improve the tracking performance of sensors, this paper addresses the issue of optimal state estimation in a hybrid multisensor data fusion system with feedback information for similar and dissimilar synchronous sensors. In this system, part of the sensors process their data locally to produce local tracks while another part of the sensors only provide detection reports. These tracks and detection reports are communicated to a central site where track fusion and state estimation are performed. The fusion results are then returned to some sensors, so that the tracking performance of the sensors might be improved.

A likelihood ratio test is proposed for moving target detection in a ultra wide frequency band and wide antenna beam (wide band) SAR systems. The developed method combines time domain fast backprojection SAR processing methods with moving target detection. It saves the computational load when all relative speeds can be tested using the same clutter suppressed sub-aperture beams. The proposed method is tested on narrow band radar data.
