Information advantage is the key success factor in all conflicts. In a modern combat aircraft the amount of available information is continuously increasing with new and more sophisticated sensor systems. By incorporating an integrated mission recording system the vast amount of information captured in a modern combat aircraft is recorded. Evaluating this information, whether for aircraft development, pilot training or in combat, will maximize the experience from each night and enhance the efficiency of the following missions. All Lot 3 of the Swedish fighter JAS39 Gripen as well as the export versions will be equipped with a digital mission recording system. The system is called DiRECT and is used for video, audio and data recording on a direct access, solid-state memory.

The output of the Airport Surveillance radar (ASR-9) serves as the primary source of precipitation data in the Integrated Terminal Weather System (ITWS) product suite. The product is used primarily to determine optimum routes for aircraft operating in and near the terminal airspace. In view of this, it is important that this data provide accurate information about the intensity and location of weather echoes within the sensor's domain. A monitor program can be used to identify and flag operationally significant inaccuracies in the ASR-9 weather channel data. The output of this program will be beneficial to both air traffic control specialists and maintenance personnel.

In the next few years, there will be a substantial increase in the number of commercial space-based and airborne Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) systems and three-dimensional Synthetic Aperture radar systems (Interferometric SAR:IFSAR). This will result in affordable, new types of data that can be used to complement other sensor systems, e.g., LandSat, SPOT, and in some cases, solve serious data collection deficiencies. The availability of this data has resulted in high interest in developing a commercial market for products derived from this data. This paper describes a methodology for developing such products and presents results from applying the methodology.

datavisualization and feature selection methods are proposed based on the joint mutual information and ICA. The visualization methods can find many good 2-D projections for high dimensional data interpretation, which cannot be easily found by the other existing methods. The new variable selection method is found to be better in eliminating redundancy in the inputs than other methods based on simple mutual information. The efficacy of the methods is illustrated on a radar signal analysis problem to find 2-D viewing coordinates for datavisualization and to select inputs for a neural network classifier.

The paper describes a visualization aspect of cloud seeding activities in a new hail suppression information system. The system increases the efficiency of the radar centers and automates the working process from acquisition of radar information about clouds to launching rockets with seeding material. The main advantages are less time consuming for seeding action and better precision for the determination of the area to be seeded. In 1996, the United States Air Force initiated the Advanced Airborne Surveillance Program (AASP) to develop and demonstrate the detection performance of state-of-the-art multi-channel bistatic airborne radartechnology. The AASP sensor utilizes a multi-channel, phased-array receiver, mounted on a BAC1-11 to collect and process bistatic radar returns from moving targets, clutter and jammers. The bistatic multi-channel airborne radar measurements (MCARM) data provides a good starting point in developing STAP algorithms for the AASP system. The steady exploitation of the MCARM data has yielded much insight into the performance of several STAP algorithms in various monostatic as well as bistatic scenarios. This paper describes the bistatic experiments and presents several results attesting to the applicability of STAP algorithms to the bistatic scenarios.

The focus of this paper is to describe the moving target exploitation (MTE) ground station testbed-a battlefield awareness asset based on the Army's common ground station (CGS) whose primary capability is the exploitation of ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radardata. In this paper, we describe the core GMTI and high range resolution (HRR) exploitation capabilities to be integrated into the MTE ground station testbed. These core capabilities include: (i) a multiple hypothesis tracker (MHT) capable of tracking on- and off-road targets, group targets, and performing road-constrained, terrain-constrained, and length-aided tracking, (ii) a sensor resource manager capable of mode tasking the airborne sensor for GMTI or HRR data, and (iii) a vehicle-level fusion capability capable of accruing classification evidence for single vehicles and group composition evidence for vehicle groups. The sensor emulation platform (SEP), a Navy AT3 attack/bomber aircraft serving as a surrogate for the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), will serve as the airborne sensor generating and down linking GMTI and HRR waveforms to the ground station testbed for exploitation.

The technique described in this paper is concerned with the provision of a sign language emulator driven by an array of electromagnetic sensors integrated into a pair of data gloves. The objective is to provide a 3D visualization of the signing performed either end of the telephone link. The link requires an ISDN telephone protocol which is now actively marketed in the UK by the telecommunications industry. The objective of the work is to enable the deaf to communicate across telecommunications links. The sensing system is based on an electromagnetic imaging technique devised for key hole surgery and specifically for guidance of colonoscopes during colonoscopy in the screening and treatment of intestinal cancers. It comprises modules for generating magnetic field, sensing the magnetic field and processing the signals from the first two modules. sensors are mounted in a pair of gloves and determine a position of the fingers and hands to enable the sign language to be read by a computer. Images could be than transferred via ISDN links anywhere in the world. This system operates in real time and with a position accuracy of a few millimeters and orientation accuracy of less than 1 degree of arc.
