The problem of detection and classification of buried dielectric anomalies using artificial neural networks was considered. Several methods for training and data representation were developed to study the trainability and generalization capabilities of the networks. The effect of the architectural variation of the network performance was also studied. The principal component method was used to reduce the volume of the data and also the dimension of the weight space. Simulation results on two types of targets were obtained which indicated superior detection and classification performance when compared with the conventional methods.

The authors describe an algorithm for discarding outliers in noisy and possibly sparse sensordata. The authors demonstrate a network that incorporates robustness in its computation and the network settles to its final solution in a few time constants. The work is a modification of a resistive network which provides for detection and removal of outliers in image segmentation. A nonlinear resistive network is used to isolate an input point from the rest of the network when the input point differs significantly from the neighborhood average. The resistive network outlier algorithm has a simple elegant embodiment in analog real-time VLSI hardware. The authors demonstrate the algorithm with simulations on a laser radar image.< >

It is pointed out that modern workstations, such as the VITec Image Computing System, are beginning to address the performance and functionality issues involved with interactive visualization in an integrated, cost-effective environment. visualization, combining computer graphics with imaging, enables users to visualize both image and non-image data, and to be able to integrate images with text and graphics. This type of interactive computing requires sufficient processing power to handle the large amounts of data involved. In addition, the hardware system is a complete computer in itself, which is programmable, and therefore the function library for imaging is included within the instructions of the hardware system. The authors introduce a class of stochastic processes motivated by the wavelet transform. These processes are represented by Markovian state models in which scale plays the role of a time-like variable. This class of processes is rich enough to model 1/f-type behavior as well as such standard processes as those belonging to the Gauss-Markov class. The authors present an efficient smoothing algorithm which makes it possible to compute estimates based on multiscale data. The authors give numerical examples to show how these models can be used to smooth noisy data as well as examples of fusing multiscale data.< >

It is pointed out that a cockpit revolution is in the making. Many of the promised, but little delivered technologies of the 1970s and 1980s will finally come of age in the 1990s just in time to complement the data explosion coming from sensor and processing advances. Technologies such as helmet systems, large flat panel displays, speech recognition, color graphics, decision aiding, and stereopsis are simultaneously reaching technology maturities that promise big payoffs for the third-generation cockpit and beyond. The author examines tactical cockpit problems and the technologies needed to solve them and recommends three generations of solutions. He discusses what the third-generation cockpit might look like and how it might integrate many of the above-mentioned technologies.< >

An examination is made of the current approaches to sensor line supervision and their relative effectiveness against the range of easily available circumvention techniques is assessed, compared to encrypted line supervision. Features of high security encrypted line supervision, including encryption techniques, interactive polling, the generation of random data, proprietary algorithms and keys, serial numbers and the processing of such an approach are discussed, including the flexibility offered by miniaturization of the microprocessor controlled circuits and modular system design. Highlighted are how an encryption module can be deployed within an overall high security system. Examples of practical applications provide insight into the effective and efficient use of this advanced security technology.
