A consequence of migrating the existing Internet architecture to an all-optical one is that the network will consist of a mixture of equipment, ranging from electrical routers to all-optical packet switches. Hence, future networks will consist of multiple domains employing different technologies. The MPLS concept is attractive because it can work as a unifying control structure covering all technologies. This paper describes how a novel scheme for optical MPLS and circuit switched GMPLS based networks can incorporated in such multi-domain, MPLS-based scenarios and how it could be modeled. Network nodes supporting GMPLS the proposed novel scheme is implemented and routing and path setup is demonstrated.

Admission control is a key component for QoS delivery in ipnetworks because it determines the extent to which network resources are utilized and whether the contracted QoS characteristics are actually delivered. Unlike most of the existing approaches, we adopt a holistic view and position the admission control in a unified architecture, where traffic engineering and service management interact in different levels of abstraction and timescale. Distinguishing between service subscription and invocation epochs, the applied admission logic is based on a feedback model, the operation of which can be tuned by operational policies and business strategies. The validity of the approach is supported by a scalability analysis while it has also been verified by a prototype system.

To provide QoS control for real time traffic in core routers, this paper designs and evaluates a 320 Gb/s switch system, which supports 16 line cards, each operating at OC192c line rate (10 Gb/s). This switch system contains a high performance switch fabric and supports variable-length ip packet interface. These two characters provide advantages over traditional switch fabrics with a cell interface. This switch system supports eight priorities to both unicast and multicast traffic. The highest priority with strict QoS guarantee is for real time traffic, and other seven lower priorities with weighted round-robin (WRR) service discipline are for other common data traffic. Through simulation under multi-priority burst traffic model, we demonstrate this switch system not only can provide excellent performance for real time traffic, but also can efficiently allocate bandwidth among all kinds of traffic. As a result, this switch system can serve as a key node in high-speed networks, and it can also meet the challenge of multimedia traffic to the next generation Internet.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) are a popular method for connecting enterprises over a public network infrastructure. Using an ip-based backbone has the potential to significantly reduce the capital expenditure of the service providers and allow them to offer a variety of legacy and new services using a common infrastructure. Recently, a variety of methods have been proposed that enable implementation of VPN services over ip-based backbone networks. scalability is one of the basic requirements in all the ip-based VPN architectures. In this paper, we focus on cases where the provider must support explicit routing of customer's traffic, and thus have to implement some form of constrained path computation in its backbone network. Routing protocols that support constrained path computation have been known to cause high volumes of routing protocol controltraffic. This overhead can seriously affect the operation of the backbone routers and limit the scalability of the VPN architecture. We propose a mechanism that significantly reduces the overhead from routing protocol messages in the core of the network by exchanging resource availability information only between the edge routers. We show that with relatively straightforward changes to the protocols used in the backbone, it is possible to achieve considerable savings in the amount of the routing protocol control overhead without compromising routing performance.

The popularity of network-based control systems (NBCS) is continuously growing. One of the most intriguing aspects is the transportation of control network data over ip-based networks as standardized in EIA-852. To a large extent the actual quality of control (QoC) in such systems depends on the network timing such as delay and delay jitter. This. work focuses on the effect of delay jitter at a fixed mean delay on the QoC. Two sources of delay jitter are identified in EIA-852-based systems: (i) network traffic induced, and (ii) protocol induced. At the example of a simple control-loop it is investigated how the induced jitter affects the QoC using a time-discrete simulation model. Concepts to reduce the effect of jitter on QoC are presented and conclusions are drawn how the findings in the EIA-852 system can be extended to a generalized NBCS.

In this paper we investigate the performance of IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks by means of an experimental study. Measurements on IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks confirm previous simulative results (e.g., TCP connections may actually experience significant throughput unfairness). The analysis of IEEE 802.11b reveals several aspects that are usually neglected in simulative studies. Firstly, since different transmission rates are used for control and data frames, different transmission ranges and carrier-sensing ranges may exist at the same time in the network. In addition, the transmission ranges are in practice much shorter than usually assumed in simulative analysis, and are not constant but highly variable, even in the same session.
