Standard ip mobility management (ip-MM) commonly known as Mobile ip, presents a set of technical challenges in performance and scalability, as the mobile host (MN) varies the handoff rate, due to its mobility pattern, between successive wireless points of attachment; these manifest themselves primarily as increased signaling between the MN and its peers. In addition, they encompass sources of latency external to the mobility protocol; a significant component of this latency is induced by signaling round trip time between the communicating entities while in transit. Recently, Mobile ip has been extended by certain micro-mobility protocol mechanisms, aiming to alleviate the above performance limitations; they are identified as hierarchical/regional or more generically localised ip mobility management. This paper presents an investigation on requirements for ip localised mobility management (ip-LMM). Based on generic principles derived from the effect of localising mobility control signaling it explores the requirement space essential for robust micro-mobility protocol extensions to base ip mobility models.

One of the great challenges nowadays when managing ip networks is to guarantee proper Quality of Service, using network infrastructure on optimized way. One of the proposed solutions is traffic engineering with MPLS. However, the characterization of the demands and of the network state are difficult tasks, considering that the demands and the data traffic are random, consequently, the network state changes dynamically and in a random way. In this work we propose a connection admission controller that uses fuzzy logic based on linguistic rules to treat the inaccurate information in ip over MPLS networks with the purpose of offering Quality of Service to the users. In accordance with the simulation results, we concluded that the use of fuzzy logic allows a large flexibility in the connection admission process and the possibility to include more network and traffic information when making a decision without increasing considerably the controller complexity.

The potential use of ip networks for real-time high performance robots and automation is enormous and appealing. A widely attractive objective for an ip-based mobile robot is to control a mobile robot over the ip network to track a predefined path. This paper proposes a model predictive path tracking control methodology over an ip network via middleware. In addition to the normal use of middleware, this paper utilizes middleware to schedule a control parameter for ip network delay compensation. The parameter is adjusted externally at the output of the path tracking algorithm with respect to the current network traffic conditions and a predictive performance measure computed by a neural network. Simulation results show that the mobile robot with neural network middleware provides significantly better ip networked control system performance.

This paper gives an overview of the work carried out during the course of the COST-266 action on circuit/wavelength switched network studies. Several subjects are discussed in detail in this paper. A first important topic deals with the different control plane models in single- and multi-domain networks. A second important issue is the routing and wavelength assignment problem, both in networks with static and dynamic traffic demands. Also the ip-over-OTN network architecture, envisaged to be the network architecture most suited for future transport networks, is discussed. Hybrid wireless networks are a viable networking solution to combat the limitations of infrastructured wireless networks and provide Internet connectivity to ad hoc networks. This paper first analyzes the requirements for deployment of hybrid networks in different application scenarios. Then two routing schemes designed for different traffic patterns in hybrid networks are proposed to achieve optimal performance. Simulation results show that with a large percentage of short web-based traffic sessions, using a gateway as a default router results in better performance with lower latency, fewer routing table entries, and manageable control overhead. When traffic locality is high and Internet traffic is only an occasional occurrence, the reactive routing scheme results in better performance, yielding low control overhead and higher throughput.

The electronic/optical hybrid network deploys the integration of optical GMPLS technology and ipv6 routing technology [J. Murayama, Aug. 2003]. This hybrid network improves the scalability from the viewpoint of the number of PE (provider edge) routers. Additionally, a high performance of packet forwarding is also respected. To improve forwarding performance of this network, a cut-through optical path that directly connects a pair of PE routers with high traffic demand is provided. This path improves a performance of packet forwarding between the PE routers, and avoids traffic congestion at electronic P (provider) routers. Since a number of cut-through optical paths are limited according to a limitation of network resources, a cut-through optical path should be assigned efficiently. This paper proposes an optimum path allocation algorithm according to traffic demand and resource limitation. On the other hand, to keep a best forwarding performance even if traffic demand changes, the reassignment of cut-through optical paths is needed. Such a reassignment could degrade quality of packet forwarding because a traffic concentration at an electronic P router is caused at a substituting time. This paper proposes a traffic control mechanism to avoid a traffic concentration at an electronic P router. To control a constant traffic concentration, we propose a load balancing method between electronic P routers. To control a temporal traffic concentration, we propose a cooperative operation between a cut-through optical path reassignment and ipv6 path assignment. This paper proposes a multi-layered traffic engineering server (MLTES) that provides the proposed functions and manages optical paths and ipv6 paths cooperatively and efficiently. MLTES achieves a high performance of an electronic/optical hybrid network, and provides a low cost and high performance ip-VPN platform.

For networks providing a specific level of service guarantees, capacity planning is an imperative part of network management. Accurate dimensioning is especially important in DIffServ networks, where no per-flow signaling or control exists. In this paper, we address the problem of capacity planning for DIffServ networks with only expedited forwarding (EF) and best effort (BE) traffic classes, The problem is formulated as an optimization problem, where the total link cost is minimized, subject to the performance constraints of both EF and Be classes. The variables to be determined are the routing of EF traffic, and the discrete capacities of the links. We show that Lagrangean relaxation and subgradient optimization methods can be used to solve the problem. Computational results show that the solution quality is verifiably good while the running time remains reasonable on practical-sized networks. This represents the first work for capacity planning of multi-class ip networks with non-linear performance constraints.

The diverse service requirements of emerging Internet applications faster the need for flexible and scalable ip quality-of-service (QoS) schemes. Due to its simplicity and scalability, DiffServ is expected to be widely deployed across the Internet. Though DiffServ supporting scheduling algorithms for output-queueing (OQ) switches have been widely studied, there are few DiffServ scheduling algorithms for input-queueing (IQ) switches. In this paper, we propose the dynamic DiffServ scheduling (DDS) algorithm for IQ switches to provide dynamic bandwidth allocation for DiffServ classes. The basic idea of DDS is to schedule EF and AF traffic according to their minimum service rates with the reserved bandwidth and schedule AF and BE traffic fairly with the excess bandwidth. We evaluate the performance of DDS under bursty traffic arrivals and compare it with PQWRR, an existing scheduling algorithm suitable for supporting DiffServ for OQ switches. Simulations results show that DDS provides minimum bandwidth guarantees for EF and AF traffic and fair bandwidth allocation for BE traffic. DDS also achieves the delay and jitter performance for EF traffic close to that of PQWRR and the delay performance for AF traffic better than that of PQWRR at high loads. Using comparator-tree based arbitration components, it is feasible to implement DDS in hardware at high speed.

This paper presents an innovative control based traffic controller which provides at sharing a single resource, namely the available bit rate, among a set of ip flows characterized by different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The main novelty behind the proposed traffic controller is that it relies on an original control based approach which exploits a closed-loop architecture and a fuzzy tuner. Simulation results demonstrate that such traffic controller outperforms a well known traffic controller (namely the one based on the presence of Dual Leaky Buckets and Earliest Deadline First scheduling algorithm).

Core-stateless scheduling algorithms can provide a similar level of guaranteed services as the stateful approach, while they do not need per-flow management. They hence possess both the properties of quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning and high scalability. In this paper, by showing the current existing traffic models are not applicable to core-stateless networks, a new and efficient traffic model for characterizing traffic in a core-stateless network is proposed, and its properties are presented.
