In recent years, WDM networks have received much attention as the Internet backbone networks because of the explosive growth of the Internet ip-based traffic. The optical burst switching (OBS) has been proposed as an effective optical switching technology in the WDM networks (C. Qiao and M. Yoo, 1999). OBS has the advantages in 1) the high usage rate of the bandwidth, and 2) no necessity of optical buffer. However OBS has the burst-contention problem in the networks. The deflection routing is proposed as one of means to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a new routing method of using deflection routing. In addition, we propose a QoS/CoS control method using a new routing algorithm. Finally, we show the variety of the proposed methods by computer simulations.

This paper proposes two multi-path constraint-based routing algorithms for Internet traffic engineering using MPLS. In a normal constraint-based shortest path first (CSPF) routing algorithm, there is a high probability that it cannot find a feasible path through networks for a large bandwidth constraint, which is one of the most important constraints for traffic engineering. The proposed algorithms can divide the bandwidth constraint into two or more seconds and find a constrained path for each subconstraint. Extensive simulations show that they enhance the success probability of path setup and the utilization of network resources.

Quality of Service (QoS) has become an important topic in modern telecommunication network in order to guarantee multimedia traffic. In ipnetworks, diffServ seems to be the best approach to satisfy QoS constraints, due to its end-to-end philosophy. Actual trend is to consider satellite on-board switching capabilities for managing multibeam input and output. In this paper, for reducing computational complexity, a cellular neural network (CNN) has been proposed for the on-board switching problem; several traffic classes have been considered and switching algorithm has been implemented within a CNN taking into account their priority, queue length and time spent inside queues. Numerical results shows performance similar to optimal switching solution, but with a higher flexibility due to neural techniques. Simulation results have been driven with memoryless distribution and heavy-tailed distribution for several input buffer size and switch dimension.

This paper describes an algorithm to control non-adaptive sources in a simple and lightweight fashion that does not maintain per-flow state information. Using experimental results from simulations, we demonstrate that the algorithm outperforms current well-known algorithms for buffer management in providing better protection for TCP flows under varying degrees of attack from non-adaptive flows.

Optical burst switching (OBS) was proposed as a scheme to switch bursty traffic on optical switches. However, due to the lack of optical RAM, the provision of QoS with OBS is an open issue. In this paper, we are the first to propose and demonstrate a practical QoS scheduling algorithm for ip/WDM networks based on OBS. We show that, by adopting a carefully designed rescheduling scheme using delayed preemption and controlled deadlines, we archive the goal of providing differentiated services without degrading the system performance.

Access network is the important part of Internet. But conventional access technologies do not support well on user management, service providing, authentication and accounting at present. We propose a new ipv6/ipv4 access router, which integrates access aggregation, edge routing and service policy into one box, and supports different services according to different service streams. The service stream table acts as routing table, neighbor address resolving table and access policy table. It can do user authentication and accounting, bidirectional traffic statistics, bidirectional rate control, prepaid traffic limit, access control list and off-line detection.

End-to-end delay and delay jitter are critical QoS (quality of service) parameters for time sensitive applications. In wireless/ip hybrid networks, the wireless link is presumably the bottleneck. Because of the time-varying and error prone channel, the wireless channel throughput is random. On the other hand, with closed-loop AIMD (additive increase and multiplicative decrease) congestion control, the arrival process to a queue is not on-off. In this paper, given the measured channel profile and the transmission scheme used in the link layer, the wireless channel throughput distribution is derived. By analyzing the queue in the wireless domain with an AIMD controlled flow, the queuing delay distribution is derived. It is found that by appropriately setting the protocol parameters for TCP-friendly AIMD flows, the wireless spectrum can be efficiently utilized, and the QoS requirements of time sensitive applications can be statistically guaranteed.

Measurements from an Internet backbone link carrying TCP traffic towards different ADSL areas are analyzed. For traffic analysis, we adopt a flow based approach and the popular mice/elephants dichotomy, where mice refer to short traffic transfers and elephants to long transfers. The originality of the reported experimental data, when compared with previous measurements from very high speed backbone links, is that the commercial traffic includes a significant part generated by peer-to-peer applications. This kind of traffic exhibits some remarkable properties in terms of mice and elephants, as we describe. It turns out that by adopting a suitable level of aggregation, the bit rate of mice can be described by means of a Gaussian process. The bit rate of elephants is smoother than that of mice and can also be well approximated by a Gaussian process.
