The complexity and dynamics of the Internet is driving the demand for scalable and efficient network simulation. In this paper, we describe a novel approach that partitions the networks into domains and simulation time into intervals. Each domain is simulated independently of and concurrently with the others with only local domain information over the same simulated time interval. At the end of each interval, global routing information, packet delays and drop rates for each inter-domain flow are exchanged between domain simulators. When the exchanged information converges to the value within a prescribed precision all simulators progress to the next simulated time interval. This approach allows the parallelization with infrequent synchronization, and achieves significant simulation speedups. Such a solution supports simulations of large-scale networks on distributed machines with modest memory size.

The traffic engineering of ip networks requires accurate characterization and modeling of network traffic due to the growing diversity of multimedia applications and the need to efficiently support QoS differentiation in the network. In recent years, several types of traffic behavior that can have significant impact on network performance were discovered: long-range dependence, self-similarity, and more recently, multifractality. The extent to which a traffic model needs to incorporate these characteristics is still the subject of much research. In this work, we address the modeling of network traffic multifractality by evaluating the performance of three models, which cover a wide range of traffic types, as mathematical descriptors of measured traffic traces showing multifractal behavior. We resort to traffic traces measured both at the University of Aveiro and at a Portuguese ISP. For the traffic models, we selected a Markov modulated Poisson process as an example of Markovian model, the well known fractional Gaussian noise model as an example of a self-similar process and the conservative cascade model as an example of a multifractal model. These models are evaluated comparing the density function, the autocovariance and the loss rate queuing behavior of the measured traces and of traces synthesized from the fitted models. Results show that the fractional Gaussian noise model is not able to perform a good fitting of the first and second order statistics as well as the loss rate queuing behavior, while the Markovian and the conservative cascade models both give similar and very good results. The cascade model is intrinsically multifractal, thus the obtained results are not surprising. The good performance of the Markovian model can be attributed to the parameter fitting procedure, that aggregates distinct sub-processes operating in different time scales, and matches closely both the first and second order statistics of the traffic. For assessing different routing protocols for MANETs, it is important to have some index or quantitative measure of mobility that is relevant to the performance of the network. In this paper, we proposed a mobility measure that is "canonical" in that it is flexible and consistent. It is flexible because one can customize the definition for relevant mobility using a remoteness function. It is consistent because the mobility measure has the same linear relationship to the link change rate for a wide range of mobility scenarios.

In this paper, we consider a mobile ad-hoc wireless access network in which mobile nodes can access the Internet via a stationary gateway node or access point. Mobile nodes that are outside the transmission range of the gateway can continue to communicate with the gateway via a multi-hop connection with their neighboring nodes. The ad-hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol is extended by incorporating the concept of load-balancing (LB). We call this the LB-AODV routing protocol. Simulation results show that in a congested network environment, our proposed LB-AODV has a higher packet delivery fraction, a lower end-to-end delay and control overhead when compared with both AODV and gossip-based routing protocols.

In this paper, we present the BLACK scheme that aims to prevent the unfairness problem generated by high bandwidth unresponsive flows. The scheme needs to store only a small amount of state information to maintain and exercise its fairness mechanism and utilizes a packet sampling technique that estimates both the flow's buffer occupancy fraction and the number of active flows. When working in conjunction with RED, BLACK has shown not only to be able to handle unresponsive traffic, but also improve the fairness among TCP connections with different round-trip delays in some scenarios.

In this paper, we present a survey on management mechanisms used for ensuring the quality of services (QoS) for voice-over ip (Voip) applications. We first address the motivations of QoS management for Voip. We then partition the system into two management planes, data plane and control plane, and describe mechanisms in each plane respectively. In data plane, we cover several important techniques including packet classifier, buffer management, scheduling, loss recovery, and error concealment. In control plane, we describe admission control, resource provisioning, traffic engineering, and connection management etc. As we will see, admission control plays a critical role in QoS for Voip. Thus, we will discuss methodologies used in admission control in detail. Specifically, we examine parameter-based and measurement-based admission control algorithms, and their use in Voip. Finally, we discuss limitations of current technologies and future research issues in providing QoS to Voip applications.

A new model to decompose a network traffic time series into its components, such as trend, the effect of days in a week, and variations in a day, is proposed. The logarithm of dialup access traffic at Hosei University, which was averaged over an hour, is used as the network traffic time series. The idea of the model is originated from a nonstationary Bayesian model that decomposes a monthly tune series into trend, seasonally, and trading day effects in a month. In our approach, the components which appear in the model are defined as follows: there are two types of trend component which are smooth over several days and several hours; the effect of days in a week is a periodicity in a week; and the variation in a day is a periodicity in a day. We conclude that a model of one combination of the components is suitable for analysis, through an evaluation that uses ABIC for several combinations of the components.

The growth of the Internet has brought with it a tremendous volume of multimedia traffic, which is bursty in nature. Providing a required QoS as well as modeling multimedia traffic has been a challenging task. In this work, we transcode multimedia data to cater for low bandwidth availability and different end-user requirements. We propose a protocol architecture which has been developed by the amalgamation of well-known components and that would provide guaranteed multimedia communication over the Internet. We model multimedia traffic using the M/Pareto distribution in an attempt to represent realistic traffic pattern. We use semantics of multimedia data-streams for transcoding to avoid network congestion and to ensure optimal use of network resources. The impact of transcoding the multimedia data to suit it to the network load and the end user requirements is also studied. The simulation results are presented and compared.

With the growth of high-speed access networks, we can copy video streaming services (both live streaming and video-on-demand) via the Internet at home. For higher perceptual video quality, it is necessary to monitor the video quality of each user flow in real time and control network source based on it. In this paper we propose a streaming quality management (SQM) system that estimates perceptual video quality of each user flow by capturing control messages of streaming protocol between server and client at server side. In addition, we equipped SQM system for Windows Media Technologies (WMT), Real System, and Mpeg2. The equipped SQM system has desirable characteristics; estimated streaming quality obtained from the system is almost the same as that from DMOS (Degradation Mean Opinion Score) defined by ITU-T [1] and the system has high scalability. Furthermore, we present network control schemes based on the streaming quality, and propose value-added services (ex. which part of content was viewed the most or how many times the content was viewed) using the streaming monitoring record each user, which could be collected by the SQM system.
