The operation of Diffserv QoS service provisioning requires the aggregation of ip or MPLS traffic streams into a limited number of DiffServ classes and queue them accordingly. To be able to analytically estimate the QoS of each Diffserv class, the characteristic of the class aggregate traffic must be determined. This paper presents an analytical technique to characterize aggregate traffic. It is widely known that ip traffic stream is highly bursty and correlated, and can be modeled as a long range dependent traffic stream. By using multifractal wavelet models (MWM) to represent each long range dependent traffic stream, the proposed technique calculates MWM model parameters for the aggregate traffic and uses them to estimate the IDC of the aggregate traffic. The calculated MWM parameters are also used to estimate QoS received by the traffic aggregate. Both analysis and simulation are used to examine the performance of the proposed technique for various traffic conditions and scenarios. The MWM parameters of a number of real traffic traces are estimated and used to determine the characteristics of the aggregate traffic. The analytically derived parameters are compared to those directly measured from the simulated aggregate traffic. The results show that the calculation technique is accurate and can be effectively used in Diffserv network.

In this paper, we propose a dynamic routing with endpoint measurement based admission control (EMBAC) for Voip networks with mesh topology. The basic idea of this admission control is to use probe flows to measure two routes, which are direct route and one of the two-link routes between each Voip call's originating-terminating node pair. Based on the probe flow's QoS evaluation, the node decides a route for each call. We compare performance of direct routing, basic dynamic routing and advanced dynamic routing by using simulation. It is shown that an advanced dynamic routing with EMBAC works better for minimizing call blocking probability and packet loss rate than direct routing.

Internet service provider (ISP) peering has emerged as one of the most important and effective ways for ISPs to improve the efficiency of operation. Peering is defined as "an interconnection business relationship whereby ISPs provide connectivity to each others' transit customers". ISPs seek peering relationships primarily for two reasons. First, peering decreases the cost and reliance on purchased Internet transit. As the single greatest operating expense, ISPs seek to minimize these telecommunications costs. Second, peering lowers inter-autonomous system (AS) traffic latency. By avoiding a transit provider hop in between ISPs, traffic between peering ISPs has lower latency.

Today's Internet only provides "best-effort" service. traffic is processed as quickly as possible, but with no commitment as to bandwidth or latency guarantee. This is inadequate for applications requiring timeliness such as video conference, video-on-demand (VOD) and voice over ip (Voip), etc. For these applications to be widely used, Quality of Service (QoS) must be quantified and managed efficiently by the Internet. This paper focuses on QoS provisioning using ipv6 flow label field. In this paper, we first investigate the flow label specification and its usage in QoS support proposed in the literature, then propose an end-to-end QoS scheme using the ipv6 flow label field, which employs a hybrid approach for flow label specification and a " flow label option" for ipv4 packet. This proposed QoS scheme is especially designed for transitional ip network containing both ipv4 and ipv6 network nodes, which is the reality in the process of Internet transition from ipv4 to ipv6. Our simulation results show that the proposed QoS scheme can efficiently differentiate various types of traffic to meet differentiated QoS requirements in a transitional network containing ipv4 and ipv6 routers.

We have proposed ip/sup 2/ (ip-based IMT network platform) as the architecture for the next generation mobile network for advanced mobility management. This paper identifies the basic ip packet routing procedures cooperated with mobility management architecture. This procedure can solve some issues of mobile ip technique from mobile carrier's perspective. For example, it can route a packet on an optimum route without packet overhead. Also this can provide location confidentiality of mobile terminal and can hide network control node's address from mobile terminal and 3/sup rd/ party. This article then studies the routing cache management scheme that is needed for address translation from ip host address (ipha) to ip routing address (ipra) and vice versa in the access router since this translation can cause a bottleneck. Next, we estimate the number of cache table entries using computer simulation, and the feasibility of implementing the mechanism in existing routers has been verified. Also, we describe hierarchical mobility management architecture based on ip/sub 2/ architecture concept in order to reduce control delay and increase scalability of this architecture, thereby decreasing both packet loss and signaling redundancy within the network.

In this paper, we term multimedia streaming application traffic "stream flows", and the other usual application traffic "nonstream flows". There are many problems where both flows are aggregated on a shared link, because different TCP and UDP behaviors cause negative interactions. To solve these, we propose a new method that reduces these interactions. In this paper, we classify nonstream flows into several classes based on assumptions that the traffic patterns of nonstream flows vary depending on upper-layer-applications and they have different interactions with stream flows. First, we discuss our classification of nonstream flows. Second, we reveal the characteristics of nonstream flows in each class. We then evaluate our method using a principle algorithm, and present the outstanding effective results we obtained through simulation experiments.

In this paper we analyze the M/G/1 processor sharing queue with heavy tailed services and with impatient customers. It is assumed that impatience depends on the value of the service required. We prove that a reduced service rate (RSR) approximation holds for estimating the sojourn time of a customer in the system, when the queue capacity is finite or infinite. This allows us to evaluate the reneging probability of customers with very large service times. We then use these results to investigate the impact of admission control on a link of a packet network. Admission control simply consists of limiting the number of simultaneous connections. It turns out that there is a real benefit for the efficiency of the system to perform admission control: It globally increases the fraction of customers, who complete their service (i.e. without being impatient). Finally, we investigate the fairness of the system and propose a criterion to assess the capacity of the system so as to allow the completion of very large service times.

Content delivery networks (CDN) design entails the placement of server replicas to bring the content close to the users, together with an efficient and content aware request routing. In this paper we address the problem of dynamic replica placement to account for users demand variability while optimizing the costs paid by a CDN provider and the overall performance of the distributed replica servers architecture. We formulate the dynamic replica placement problem as a semi Markov decision process accounting for the traffic conditions, the users level of satisfaction, as well as the costs paid to install, maintain or remove a replica from a site. The proposed model applies to general network topologies and considers realistic constraints on network and servers capacity. The optimal strategy derived by means of the decision model provides the ground for designing a centralized heuristic and is used as a benchmark for the heuristic evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed heuristic has a behavior close to that of the optimal strategy and achieves very good performance in terms of low average distance from a user to the serving replica, low average number of replicas and high probability of being able to serve a request.

Efficient routing in packet networks, such as the Internet, is one of the central challenges in networking. This research is intended to experiment with novel ideas and techniques for routing in computer networks. The central idea is to consider the amount of packets waiting in a router as representing pressure. Routing decisions are then made based on the natural notion that packets flow from high-pressure locations to low pressure locations. In the present research we present the implementation and testing of the pressure like routing algorithm in a simulated network. The study showed good performance of the protocol itself, but better results were achieved when boosting the routing tables by the Shortest Path First Algorithm. Such implementation we called Enhanced Algorithm in which we use hybrid routing protocol to achieve the best out looked performance. However, it has not been tested in practice.
