In order to characterize the dynamics of self-similar behavior in daily Internet traffic, we analyze the time series of traffic volume for a 24-hour period in a wide-area Internet, by using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) - a well-known method of characterizing nonstationarity in a time series. We show that the estimated scaling exponent (which is directly related to the Hurst parameter) of traffic fluctuations has a dependency on the level of human activity for a time scale greater than 30s. Thus, the temporal correlation for traffic fluctuations is close to 1/f-noise during the day, and becomes weaker at night. This result suggests that Internet traffic cannot be modeled using the unique value of the Hurst parameter.

This paper presents an improved ip differentiated services (DiffServ) framework, which is suitable for real-time video transmission. Especially, we investigate MPEG-4 video transmission. Based on the feature of MPEG-4 flow and the extent of network congestion, implements a new DiffServe marking algorithm. In the border router, we propose a new scheduling algorithm, called the bit-based weight time slot compensate (BWSC) scheduling algorithm, which dynamically adjusts the weighted quantum of service. Under the condition that network bandwidth can't guarantee the demand of MPEG-4 real-time transmission, the PSNR comparison of restored MPEG-4 video frame sequence verifies our method has much better performance that best-effort network. End-to-end delay and delay jitter also meet the real-time transmission demand in the improved DiffServe network.

Active queue management (AQM) is an attempt to find a delicate balance between two antagonistic Internet queuing requirements: first, buffer space should be maximized to accommodate the possibly huge transient bursts; second, buffer occupation should be minimum so as not to introduce unnecessary end-to-end delays. Traditional AQM mechanisms have been built on heuristics to achieve this balance, and have mostly done so quite well, but often require manual tuning or have resulted in slow convergence. In contrast, the PURPLE approach predicts the impact of its own actions on the behavior of reactive protocols and thus on the short-term future traffic without keeping pre-flow state. PURPLE allows much faster convergence of the main AQM parameters, at least towards a local optimum, thereby smoothing and minimizing both congestion feedback and queue occupancy. To improve the quality of the prediction, we also passively monitor (using lightweight operations) information pertaining to the amount of congestion elsewhere in the network, for example, as seen by flows traversing this router.

A TCP-friendly flow control algorithm is presented by adapting from AIMD algorithm, which not only provides basic flow congestion control for multimedia data traffic over Internet, but also fulfills the fairness between RTP flows and TCP flows. This algorithm mostly retains essential characteristics of AIMD. However, several important parameters involved in network communication is specially considered and properly introduced into the improved algorithm. All works done to AIMD algorithm can help smooth multimedia transfer and guarantee the fairness among TCP flows and RTP flows.

Diff-Serv architecture, as proposed by IETF for supporting quality of service (QoS) in the Internet, is scalable and well suited for backbone networks, but it does not exploit resources as needed. traffic engineering (TE) is a solution to this problem. The goal of this work is to develop a traffic engineering mechanism on Diff-Serv architecture to provide strict quality guarantees through the use of a distributed call admission (CA) algorithm, performed by each border router of the network. The overall performance with two kinds of update mechanisms in order to propagate information about network resources utilization, based on fixed time intervals and on utilization thresholds is studied. Such mechanisms with two different local admission criteria are employed. Moreover, the impact of the update packets processing delay and relaxation of the resource availability control constraint is inquired. Collected results show that the proposed TE architecture is able to achieve strict QoS guarantees and high exploitation of network resources. Furthermore, time intervals update mechanism is robust and offers linear performance gains with decreasing of the update period.

There have been few studies evaluating the dominant factor responsible for generating self-similar network traffic while many researchers have discussed the causes of self-similarity. In this paper, we have isolated and compared the effects of the application, transport and network layers on the self-similarity of TCP flows and their aggregates. With a simple computer simulation scenario, we show that in networks where congestion frequently occurs the transport layer dominates the self-similarity of single TCP flows over the application layer. Next we focus on the interactions between the transport and network layer. We show that on high packet loss rates the exponential backoff technique of the TCP is responsible for the elevated level of self-similarity while on low packet loss rates, the synchronization between the TCP flows may induce high degree of self-similarity of the aggregated TCP sessions. To support this conjecture on synchronization, we show synchronization is only present when the TCP flows of the the aggregate operate mostly in congestion avoidance mode.

We propose a novel active queue management scheme tailored to the specific characteristics of third generation (3G) cellular networks. Such links are often the bottleneck for an end-to-end connection and dedicated to one host. Taking advantage of these specific characteristics, we developed a queuing scheme that is simpler than popular random early detection (RED) schemes. Despite its simplicity, our solution yields superior performance for 3G links in terms of high link utilization, low queuing delay, and high end-to-end throughput for TCP bulk data transfers. Our simulation results show a clear win over both conventional drop-tail queuing and also a comparable RED scheme.

We consider the problem of on-line routing of bandwidth-guaranteed virtual paths. The basic idea is to route virtual paths such that enough spare capacity is left for accommodating weighted additional demands simultaneously between all other source-destination pairs. The problem formulation results in an integer linear program (ILP), the solution of which gives the optimal routing. However solving the ILP is NP-hard and so we resort to heuristics. We assign weights to the links in the network and then use shortest path routing. The novel aspect of the weight assignment is that the weights take into account the residual link capacities, as well as the number of source-destination pairs that could potentially use the link. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing algorithms in the literature (e.g. MIRA) for a variety of network topologies and traffic scenarios.

The popularity of network-based control systems (NBCS) is continuously growing. One of the most intriguing aspects is the transportation of control network data over ip-based networks as standardized in EIA-852. To a large extent the actual quality of control (QoC) in such systems depends on the network timing such as delay and delay jitter. This work focuses on the effect of delay jitter at a fixed mean delay on the QoC. Two sources of delay jitter are identified in EIA- 852-based systems: (i) network traffic induced, and (ii) protocol induced. At the example of a simple control-loop it is investigated how the induced jitter affects the QoC using a time-discrete simulation model. Concepts to reduce the effect of jitter on QoC are presented and conclusions are drawn how the findings in the EIA-852 system can be extended to a generalized NBCS.

The small-time (sub-seconds) scaling behaviors of Internet backbone traffic, based on traces collected from OC3/12/48 links in a tier-1 ISP is studied. We observe that for a majority of these traces, the (second-order) scaling exponents at small time scales (1 ms - 100 ms) are fairly close to 0.5, indicating that traffic fluctuations at these time scales are (nearly) uncorrelated. In addition, the traces manifest mostly monofractal behaviors at small time scales. The objective of the paper is to understand the potential causes or factors that influence the small-time scalings of Internet backbone traffic via empirical data analysis. We analyze the traffic composition of the traces along two dimensions - flow size and flow density. Our study uncovers dense flows (i.e., flows with bursts of densely clustered packets) as the correlation-causing factor in small time scales, and reveals that the traffic composition in terms of proportions of dense vs. sparse flows plays a major role in influencing the small-time scalings of aggregate traffic.
