We consider peer-to-peer and distributed networks where a large number of objects (such as users, information and applications) are distributed and they move dynamically. In such a distributed network environment, the ability to discover objects that match given query criteria, such as a set of keywords, is highly desirable. We propose a discovery mechanism that is scalable, adaptable and robust to a dynamic network environment. The proposed discovery mechanism is fully distributed (without using any centralized entity in the network) and includes novel features that utilize information about the preference of the discovery originator in order to provide higher quality hits to discovery originators selectively, resulting in less traffic than an existing broadcast based discovery mechanism. Our study methodology of the proposed discovery mechanism involves extensive simulations that compared our discovery mechanism with the performance of an existing broadcast based discovery mechanism.

We propose to provide QoS differentiation at the ip level based on the DiffServ model over the standard distributed coordination function (DCF) method of 802.11. By constraining the output rate of each host in a cell via DiffServ scheduling and traffic shaping mechanisms, we can keep the 802.11 network in the state of nonsaturation so that the time-sensitive expedited forwarding (EF) class benefits from stable short delays. We analyze the performance of 802.11b to find how we should constrain the rate of DiffServ sources and present extensive measurements that show how the QoS differentiation is achieved.

Recent investigations into the pricing of multiclass loss networks have shown that static prices are optimal in the asymptotic regime of many small sources. These results suggest that nearly optimal prices for highly aggregated systems can be computed from the solution to a limiting deterministic optimization model. When the assumption of many small sources does not hold, static prices are still preferable (for practical reasons), but we are left with the difficult issue of computing an optimal solution when the stochastic nature of the process cannot be ignored. In this paper, we develop a computational procedure for optimizing static prices that operates by adjusting prices in response to actual customer arrivals and departures and is robust to parametric uncertainty about the underlying system. We provide initial arguments for the convergence properties of our optimization algorithm, and we illustrate its application in several numerical examples.

This paper presents a summary of our work on developing an architecture for transporting real-time traffic (MPEG4 video in this paper) in ip networks that provide service differentiation. We target our architecture at assured forwarding (AF) style services. This architecture assumes loss differentiation in the network and the network's ability to provide ECN messages to the sender. We did not consider policing/shaping at the edge routers. Rather we considered a more general case where marking and flow control are provided at the senders. For this network model, we developed a rate adaptation algorithm that can operate in both unicast and multicast applications with a minor modification. The simulation results presented in this paper represent the multicast case. The results show how the rate adaptation algorithm accommodates different receivers with different networking capabilities and provides them with different qualities by taking advantage of the queue management capabilities of the AF service. We also show the results of testing this architecture with different AF queuing mechanisms, namely RIO and WRED.

Internet traffic analysis and prediction is important for network operators to prepare for future demand. The traditional approach of curve-fitting on historical data becomes less effective as technologies advance at a fast pace. To address the problem, a simulation framework is developed with flexibility and modularity in mind so that simulations can be quickly constructed for new applications and scenarios. We show how to use the framework to simulate Web traffic demand over the Internet. Our approach provides important new insights on traffic properties as the effects of different parameters on traffic demand are explored. We verify the simulation models and parameters using current Internet traffic measures and demonstrate the use of the models to predict future Web traffic demand.

This paper describes the continuation of the hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) project started by the U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC) in FY 2000. The paper describes the design and implementation of a hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) methods using the discrete-event modeling package, OPNET modeler. The project objective is to develop a capability to evaluate performance of large and complex army communications networks and network-centric systems by combining virtual models with real networks. HITL and SITL methods have been developed that allow virtual models to communicate real ip traffic with real applications in real networks. A generic reference model for HITL and SITL use has been proposed for use in DoD systems. This paper proposes use of the HITL and SITL techniques for developmental testing for JTRS Cluster 1. Potential DoD programs that require developmental testing may be JTRS clusters, WIN-T, and FCS. The U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC), Technology Integration Center (TIC), Fort Huachuca, AZ, and BAE SYSTEMS, CNIR, Reston, VA sponsored this research in the Computer Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) at the University of Arizona.

In this paper we investigate the performance of IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks by means of an experimental study. Measurements on IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks confirm previous simulative results (e.g., TCP connections may actually experience significant throughput unfairness). The analysis of IEEE 802.11b reveals several aspects that are usually neglected in simulative studies. Firstly, since different transmission rates are used for control and data frames, different transmission ranges and carrier-sensing ranges may exist at the same time in the network. In addition, the transmission ranges are in practice much shorter than usually assumed in simulative analysis, and are not constant but highly variable, even in the same session.

Searching efficiency is a decisive factor concerning scalability in large-scale peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing systems. While flooding is the most commonly used and user-performance oriented method to broadcast query across unstructured P2P networks, it generates a large number of redundant messages. Our study shows that more than 70% of messages are redundant using flooding in a moderately connected network, which imposes an increasingly excessive burden on the underlying infrastructure, hindering the growth and scalability of P2P systems. To reduce the use of flooding as well as its associated overhead, we utilize access trails left by a standard flooding, which is a collection of P2P links used by non-redundant messages. Thus the multiple queries following the flooding can be broadcasted along the trail to achieve two goals: (1) The ability of flooding to achieve short response time is maintained; and (2) the cost of a broadcast is minimized. Though the trail can be partially damaged in an ad hoc system with frequent arrivals and departures of peers, we use repeated trail refreshings and additional trail links to make a trail consistently available for query broadcast. We call this trail-based technique FloodTrail. We have evaluated the performance of FloodTrail on P2P systems for Web contents sharing. Simulation results show that FloodTrail could reduce flooding traffic by up to 57%, while maintaining almost the same search coverage as that of flooding.

The existing Internet provides best effort service. As such the quality of service (QoS) perceived by a user is inconsistent and unpredictable. In particular, the QoS for such applications is often poor when the links between communicating entities are congested or subject to sudden and unpredictable traffic surge. It is therefore desirable to introduce new service architecture in the Internet that guarantees QoS to continuous media application. The DiffServ architecture combined with multi protocol label switching (MPLS) have become a promising mechanism of achieving QoS with the scalability required by the Internet. MPLS achieves fast forwarding of packets through its connection-oriented framework. The MPLS edge router assigns packets with labels. Label switched routers in the MPLS core network direct the packets based on their labels. This paper addresses the resource allocation concerns at the DiffServ-enabled MPLS edge node. A DiffServ-MPLS dynamic link bandwidth allocation engine is described. The link bandwidth allocation engine is based on fuzzy logic and the maximum bandwidth allocation scheme. This work demonstrates that the fuzzy logic scheduler can be used in a hierarchical manner, where it first allocates link bandwidth based on three main traffic classes, i.e. premium, assured and best effort and then divides and allocates the bandwidth in the assured class further, i.e. gold, silver and bronze.

In this article we show how it is possible to obtain lower loss rates over the Internet network by using redundant transmission. The redundant transmission idea is based on the fact that the information can be duplicated and sent to the destination using independent resources. The redundant transmission on a datagram network like the Internet can be obtained by sending the same packet over different paths. The source-routing option of the ip protocol is used to send a packet to its destination on a given path. This option is widely supported by the Internet version 6 network. Using a developed software tool proves improvements in the transmission. This tool has two main functionalities: the first one consists in discovering the topology of the network between the source and the destination; the second feature of the software consists in sending duplicates of a given packet over non-overlapping paths to the destination.
