A darknet is an advertised and routed portion of Internet address space that contains no advertised services. Any traffic observed on a darknet is therefore illegitimate and darknets are useful tools for observing the level of background 'noise' on a larger network. Darknets have been used in existing ipv4 networks to help to identify malicious traffic, malware trends, or the consequences of misconfiguration. We have created what may be the world's first ipv6 darknet to help us observe the 'noise' present on the ipv6 Internet and to see how this differs from the ipv4 Internet. Initial results suggest that the level of undirected malicious software active on the ipv6 Internet is currently minimal and there is no apparent undirected port-scanning activity. We suspect this is partially a (predicted) consequence of the larger ipv6 address space and also an indication of the immaturity of the ipv6 Internet at the present time

The airborne network (AN) is a constellation of networked aircrafts flying in periodic orbits. AN is an enabling technology for network centric warfare for the military, autonomous air traffic control for commercial aviation and for providing Internet access over a broad urban area. AN is a highly dynamic environment and presents challenges that have not been addressed in traditional wire-line or wireless MANET research. Wireless links in AN are quasi-persistent and break due to platform banking and antenna shadowing. In this paper, the objective is to deploy airborne nodes so that they provide ground nodes with high data upload capacity while making sure that a minimal topology within the backbone airborne network is always maintained. For the sake of simplicity of presentation we make a few assumptions on the trajectories of the airborne nodes. We verify our assumptions against a well studied airborne network deployment scenario. Using tools from convex optimization we determine optimal locations of airborne nodes for three different scenarios. We present our results graphically and illustrate them using examples.

Diff-Serv architecture, as proposed by IETF for supporting quality of service (QoS) in the Internet, is scalable and well suited for backbone networks, but it does not exploit resources as needed. traffic engineering (TE) is a solution to this problem. The goal of this work is to develop a traffic engineering mechanism on Diff-Serv architecture to provide strict quality guarantees through the use of a distributed call admission (CA) algorithm, performed by each border router of the network. The overall performance with two kinds of update mechanisms in order to propagate information about network resources utilization, based on fixed time intervals and on utilization thresholds is studied. Such mechanisms with two different local admission criteria are employed. Moreover, the impact of the update packets processing delay and relaxation of the resource availability control constraint is inquired. Collected results show that the proposed TE architecture is able to achieve strict QoS guarantees and high exploitation of network resources. Furthermore, time intervals update mechanism is robust and offers linear performance gains with decreasing of the update period.

Network damage evaluation is a hot research topic in network security area. This paper reviews previous works in the area of network damage evaluation. These studies focus on building an index system and computing the damage by the entropy before and after attacks without taking the correlation of index into consideration, which could results in damage increased, and it cannot express the variable of attack damage. This paper measures the damage degree on network availability in the sudden traffic under attack, and then uses dynamic relevant coefficient adjustment method, which combine with real-time network entropy calculation method, to obtain a more accurate reflection during the dynamic process of attack damage. The simulation experimental results show that the method can reflect the dynamic process of network availability damage accurately and integrally.

Network simulation tool is needed to verify the functionalities and performance of networks. The SSFNet (scalable simulation framework network models) is a network simulation tool using open source software with various network simulation applications. It has been designed for the expansion of network including topology, protocols, traffic, and etc, and is able to support simulation for the large-scale network like Internet. However it is not easy for general users to perform network simulation using SSFNet because the SSFNet does not provide users with any supplementary tools for designing of network elements and topology, and analyzing of simulation results. The network modeling and analysis process must be done manually by users themselves. This circumstance makes it difficult to perform reliable network simulation. In this paper, we design a network simulation environment available for SSFNet. Using this environment, users can build network simulation model effectually and analyze the simulation results without difficulty.

Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture has been proposed as a scheme to provide scalable end-to-end QoS by employing a simple classification based on the DSCP in ip header. One of the major reasons that hinder ISPs to provide DiffServ is that the service level cannot be guaranteed when a specific traffic flow traverses a number of DS and non-DS domains. The issue of the impact of non-DS domains or non-DS routers in a hybrid multi-domain DiffServ network on the performance of Premium Services and Assured Services has been largely ignored by the research community. In this paper, we first present a preliminary queueing analysis of the hybrid multidomain DiffServ network based on a tandem queue model. Then we propose a performance metric called SPI (Service Provision Index) to measure the service level degradation of preferred services in a hybrid multi-domain DiffServ network with respect to an All-DS network. Network simulations and emulations are conducted on a variety of scenarios with different parameter settings to explore the performance of a hybrid multi-domain DiffServ network. Based on the quantitative analysis, the simulation and emulation results, we make some observations on the underlying problem, which could help ISPs or researchers determine the major factors of service degradation, as well as possible directions to improve the services.

This paper proposes a new measurement architecture and associated traffic estimation algorithm called FastFlow that uses the heavy-tailed nature of Internet traffic in order to distinguish packets belonging to short lived flows (SLFs) and long lived flows (LLFs). While complete information is stored for SLFs, only partial information related to LLFs is collected using systematic sampling. The absence of data points in LLFs is approximated using a likelihood function defined over the coupon collector problem and the distribution of underlying traffic estimated using the non-parametric Parzen window technique. We validate the performance of our approach using traffic traces collected from our lab and observe that the estimated statistics match the observed traces with high accuracy.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is considered as a new approach promising simplified network management by providing a programmable interface. The idea of SDN is based on the separation of control plane from the data plane in networking devices. This is achieved by having the network intelligence centralised in what is called as SDN controller. In this paper we propose techniques for botnet detection in networks using SDN. The SDN controller makes use of generic templates for capturing the traffic flow information from the OpenFlow switches and makes use of this information for detecting bots. We will show that our model can detect a range of bots including IRC, HTTP and peer-to-peer bots.

After a large-scale disaster such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, mobile networks will face a massive number of call attempts for voice communication, which makes it difficult for them to maintain mobile services. In this paper, we propose a new approach to reducing massive traffic congestion under such circumstances and describe the results of an empirical study performed on large-scale evaluation facilities. Use of an architecture that utilizes a virtualization platform (e.g. Hypervisor) allows the reallocation of resources for service control systems as necessary and the resulting system is capable of adapting to service demand deviations. By using this capability, we explore the case wherein packet service resources are reduced to allow their reassignment to voice service. To evaluate the proposal, a 3GPP-compliant IMS (ip Multimedia Subsystem) and EPC (Evolved Packet Core) system running on a virtualization platform were developed with associated networking systems and control and management systems. The evaluation assumes a situation in which the overall system supports 500 thousand customers and the level of congestion similar to that observed in the disaster of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The result shows that 1) voice service capacity increased more than 5 times compared to normal and 2) the reallocation was completed within about 30 minutes.

We consider the problem of on-line routing of bandwidth-guaranteed virtual paths. The basic idea is to route virtual paths such that enough spare capacity is left for accommodating weighted additional demands simultaneously between all other source-destination pairs. The problem formulation results in an integer linear program (ILP), the solution of which gives the optimal routing. However solving the ILP is NP-hard and so we resort to heuristics. We assign weights to the links in the network and then use shortest path routing. The novel aspect of the weight assignment is that the weights take into account the residual link capacities, as well as the number of source-destination pairs that could potentially use the link. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing algorithms in the literature (e.g. MIRA) for a variety of network topologies and traffic scenarios.
