The HD ERTMS solution for railway traffic management is presented. It allows to achieve “high density” railway traffic, increasing the number of trains on the existing railway lines. The proposed solution is based on the ERTMS technological standard and can be integrated with existing signaling systems minimizing field intervention: HD ERTMS trains do not interfere with trains equipped by other signaling and train separation systems. The railway traffic simulation software RFI NET has been upgraded to verify HD ERTMS potentiality and to optimize rail traffic on lines, nodes and stations. Finally, results of the first HD ERTMS application to the Italian railway node of Florence are presented.

As multihoming refers to a situation where a node can choose between several paths, the MANET networks that are mobile networks without infrastructure offer naturally a multihoming feature. It is managed at the network level by the routing protocol. Multihoming capacity is also present in the IETF transport protocol SCTP. In this work we consider multihoming both at transport and at network level. We focus on the SCTP protocol over AODV ad hoc networks'. After the presentation of the multihoming dysfunction, we propose a cross layer interface in order to achieve efficient combined multihoming. The proposed approach is examined through simulations. The benefit of multihoming is potentially greater goodput of the session in case of network failures. The obtained results show the advantage of multihoming with multiple fast retransmission policy.

The RoQ (reduction-of-quality) attacks are low- rate DDoS attacks that degrade the QoS to end systems stealthily but not to deny the services completely. These attacks are more difficult to detect than the flooding DDoS attacks. This paper explores the energy distributions of Internet traffic flows in frequency domain. Normal TCP traffic flows present periodicity because of protocol behavior. Our results reveal that normal TCP flows can be segregated from malicious flows according to energy distribution properties. We discover the spectral shifting of attack flows from that of normal flows. Combining flow-level spectral analysis with sequential hypothesis testing, we propose a novel defense scheme against RoQ attacks. Our detection and filtering scheme can effectively rescue 99% legitimate TCP flows under the RoQ attacks.

This paper presents a summary of our work on developing an architecture for transporting real-time traffic (MPEG4 video in this paper) in ip networks that provide service differentiation. We target our architecture at assured forwarding (AF) style services. This architecture assumes loss differentiation in the network and the network's ability to provide ECN messages to the sender. We did not consider policing/shaping at the edge routers. Rather we considered a more general case where marking and flow control are provided at the senders. For this network model, we developed a rate adaptation algorithm that can operate in both unicast and multicast applications with a minor modification. The simulation results presented in this paper represent the multicast case. The results show how the rate adaptation algorithm accommodates different receivers with different networking capabilities and provides them with different qualities by taking advantage of the queue management capabilities of the AF service. We also show the results of testing this architecture with different AF queuing mechanisms, namely RIO and WRED.

Peer-to-peer file sharing applications are major proportion of traffic in Internet. Among P2P file sharing applications, BitTorrent is known to be the most popular system, in which peers can download pieces of file proportional with upload bandwidth shared with others. Therefore, for such a system, bandwidth adjustment is very significant for peers. In this paper we aim at modeling this as a solution to an optimization problem which maximizes the portion of download bandwidth constrained by the average download time of peers. To solve this, we propose an iterative algorithm which can be implemented in a distributed manner with low computation and communication overhead.

To maintain the communication quality of ip application flows in carrier networks where ip traffic is increasing, quality control devices that provide QoS for each flow have been developed. These devices recognize each application flow and control the quality of each flow. To control these devices in an on-demand basis, we have proposed a hierarchical policy-based multi-user bandwidth broker system. This system consists of a bandwidth broker system and quality-control devices. The bandwidth broker system is connected to the devices, an operator, and three kinds of users through each terminal or applications. The system is responsible for quality control and centrally manages all the quality control devices on networks. It operates as follows. First, the operator inputs the user information, resource information, and policy information. Second, the user submits a flow request to the bandwidth broker system. Third, the system decides whether the user should be granted the requested flow by referring to the policy and resource information. Fourth, the system sets the related quality control devices for a selected flow, and the quality control devices control the flow bandwidth. The bandwidth broker system has functions that provide a multi-user interface, hierarchical policies, flow-management according to a user request, and flow management based on flow reservations. Therefore, the system sets the quality control devices based on each user flow request, maintains consistency among the parameters of each device, and allows each user to set up their flow on an on-demand basis.

In this work, we propose a method to discriminate backscatter caused by DDoS attacks from normal traffic. Since DDoS attacks are imminent threats which could give serious economic damages to private companies and public organizations, it is quite important to detect DDoS backscatter as early as possible. To do this, 11 features of port/ip information are defined for network packets which are sent within a short time, and these features of packet traffic are classified by Suppurt Vector Machine (SVM). In the experiments, we use TCP packets for the evaluation because they include control flags (e.g. SYN-ACK, RST-ACK, RST, ACK) which can give label information (i.e. Backscatter or non-backscatter). We confirm that the proposed method can discriminate DDoS backscatter correctly from unknown dark net TCP packets with more than 90% accuracy.

This paper considers multi-connection video streaming across a tandem network with a WiMAX wireless link. The paper shows that active queue management has a role and that a small number of connections results in reasonable video quality with increased throughput. The results will be of interest to those dimensioning a mobile network for an interactive multimedia service.

The ip Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) enables the convergence of voice, data, and multimedia services. IMS is well integrated with existing voice and data networks, while adopting many of their key characteristics. Sip (Session Initiation Protocol) provides a pathway to build a single unified network, bridging the gap that previously existed between the once-separated Telecom and Internet networks. The Call Session control Functions (CSCFs) servers are the key part of the IMS structure. They are the main components responsible for processing and routing signalling messages. For users and enterprise needs, network outages or significant degradations of the quality of service (QoS) become less and less tolerable. Our research works on improvement of the QoS in IMS networks. It is base in jitter calculation and proposal of reducing jitter for improving traffic.

The goal of the network mobility (NEMO) management is to effectively reduce the complexity of handoff procedure and keep the mobile devices connected to the Internet. Vehicle is moving so fast that it may cause the handoff and packet loss problems. Both of the problems will lower down the throughput of the network. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel NEMO protocol for vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). In freeway, since every car is moving in a fixed direction with high moving speed, the car adopting our protocol can acquire ip address from the VANET through vehicle to vehicle communications. The vehicle can rely on the assistance of the front vehicle to execute the pre-handoff procedure or it may acquire its new ip address through multi-hop relays from the car on the lanes of the same or opposite direction and thus reduces the handoff delay and maintain the connectivity to the Internet. Simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme is able to reduce both handoff delay and packet loss rate.
