This paper reports a joint work between the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus, Germany, in developing a global video conferencing framework called OCTOPUS that interconnects local conferencing systems over long distances. The system makes use of both high level information provided by the participants (to decide which videos are more important to them) as well as low level adaptive mechanisms to perform media scaling as the network and the processor intensities change. It is possible to provide a customized service to each conference participant according to his/her needs and the resources available at each site. OCTOPUS itself makes no assumption on the architecture of the local video conference systems. The paper presents the architecture and the design philosophy of the OCTOPUS framework.

Next generation convergence networks require ubiquitous measurement mechanisms able to assess dynamically the performance quality characteristics experienced by the different, aggregated traffic flows traversing end-to-end Internet paths. Existing service measurements fall into two main categories: active and passive. The paper introduces a complementary technique called 'inline measurements' that makes use of the extendible features of the emerging ipv6. Through the exploitation of native ipv6 extension headers, measurement triggers and minimal measurement data may be carried in the same packets as the payload data itself, providing a high level of probability that the behaviour of the real user traffic flow is being observed. By adding measurement functionality natively, at the network (ipv6) layer, inline measurements can potentially target all transport and application services, providing an accurate performance evaluation framework for next generation networks. The paper also presents the results from a dynamically configurable prototype implementation in which end-to-end, one-way delay and delay variation of real-time video streams have been measured.

Internet traffic managers (ITMs) are special machines placed at strategic places in the Internet. itmBench is an interface that allows users (e.g. network managers, service providers, or experimental researchers) to register different traffic control functionalities to run on one ITM or an overlay of ITMs. Thus itmBench offers a tool that is extensible and powerful yet easy to maintain. ITM traffic control applications could be developed either using a kernel API so they run in kernel space, or using a user-space API so they run in user space. We demonstrate the flexibility of itmBench by showing the implementation of a kernel module that provides a differentiated network service. Due to space limitations, we refer the reader to Gali Diamant et al. (December 16, 2003) for a user-space module that provides an overlay routing service. Our itmBench Linux-based prototype is free software and can be obtained from http: //***/groups/itm/.

In this paper, we propose Mobility-incorporated Dynamic and Adaptive Provisioning mechanism (MDAP) which is path-level distributed admission control and resource management schemes for ip based Diffserv core network. Its goal is to guarantee predefined QoS metric regardless of user mobility maintaining high resource utilization. MDAP acts dynamically and adaptively as traffic situation and mobility patterns, in which especially utilizes global mobility behavior tendency of access domains. To guarantee QoS on the move, not only the mobility behavior tendency of the current access domain but also adjacent access domains' are closely coupled with MDAP’s admission decision. And also MDAP dynamically manages resources based on the level of path utilization and in-out traffic rate of that path. By doing so, we can keep overall utilization high and QoS Degradation Probability (QDP) low at the same time.

The throughput of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) has been analysed previously (Kleinrock, L. and Silvester, J., Proc. IEEE, vol.75, no.1, p.156-67, 1987). A possible network traffic pattern is one where communication sessions are between pairs of nodes arbitrarily situated throughout the network. Thus, the lengthy multiple hop paths of such communication sessions constrict network throughput. In fact, the throughput per node scales at a rate that is inversely proportional to the square root of the node count. Therefore, to maintain throughput per node that is constant with increasing node count, transceiver link capacity must grow at a rate that is proportional to the square root of the node count. Not only must link capacity scale appropriately, but so must the control overhead incurred by network communication protocols (i.e., overhead should not grow at a rate that exceeds the growth in link capacity). The paper describes how two-level link state routing can afford such scalability. That is, by adding only a single level of hierarchy to an otherwise flat routing architecture, it is possible to implement communication protocols that enable datagram forwarding while conforming to the network capacity constraints.

The emergence of the new network paradigm of software-defined networking (SDN) provides a unified control interface for centralized machine learning and greater flexibility for solving traffic engineering (TE) problems. However, most existing machine learning solutions to SDN TE problems rely on traffic requirements and fixed link capacity, ignoring the structural information of network topology and the correlation between flows and topology. This oversight can cause rapid network performance degradation during link failures and result in poor performance when traffic demand fluctuates significantly. To overcome these challenges, this study designs a flow-based message passing neural network (Flow-MPNN) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to facilitate information exchange between flows. Among them, Flow-MPNN is a method we designed based on graph neural network (GNN).By gaining a better understanding of flow-to-flow interplay and structural information about the network topology. Experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms, our proposed algorithm can accommodate 5% to 8% more traffic when the network link status remains unchanged. It also reduces maximum link utilization by 25% to 35%. Importantly, our algorithm exhibits better robustness when link status changes.

Optimizing TCP (transport layer) for mobility has been researched extensively. We present a brief summary of existing results which indicates that most schemes require intermediaries (such as base stations) to monitor the TCP traffic and actively participate in flow control in order to enhance performance. Although these methods simulate end-to-end semantics, they do not comprise true end-to-end signaling. As a result, these techniques are not applicable when the ip payload is encrypted. For instance ipSEC, which is expected to be standard under ipv6, encrypts the entire ip payload making it impossible for intermediaries to monitor TCP traffic unless those entities are part of the security association. In addition, these schemes require changes (in the TCP/ip code) at intermediate nodes making it difficult for the mobile clients to inter-operate with the existing infrastructure. In this paper we explore the "freeze-TCP" mechanism which is a true end-to-end scheme and does not require the involvement of any intermediaries (such as base stations) for flow control. Furthermore, this scheme does not require any changes on the "sender side" or intermediate routers; changes in TCP code are restricted to the mobile client side, making it possible to fully inter-operate with the existing infrastructure. We then outline a method which integrates the best attributes of freeze-TCP and some existing solutions. Performance results highlight the importance of pro-active action/signaling by the mobile-host. The data indicate that in most cases, simply reacting to disconnections tends to yield lower performance than pro-active mechanisms such as freeze-TCP.

In this paper, we present a practical VNT (virtual network topology) reconfiguration method for large-scale ip and optical networks with traffic matrix estimation considerations. We newly introduce a partial VNT reconfiguration algorithm with multiple transition stages. By dividing the whole VNT transition sequence into multiple transitions, estimation errors are calibrated at each stage by using network state information of prior stages. Because estimation errors are mainly due to the fewer information in the estimated traffic matrix calculation, our approach tries to increase the constraint conditions for traffic matrix estimation by introducing partial reconfiguration, and to relax the impact of estimation errors by limiting the number of optical-paths reconfigured at each stage. We also investigate the effectiveness of our proposal through simulations and clarify the robustness against estimation errors by using partial reconfiguration.

Network mobility (NEMO) provides continuous connectivity to the Internet to a mobile network when moving from one access router to another. Because of link switching delay and ip protocol operation, packets destined to a mobile network can be delayed or lost during handover period. This paper proposes a solution to improve NEMO handover performance for one kind of multihomed NEMO configuration (multiple mobile routers are located in a mobile network). To manage the traffic between access routers and mobile routers, a new control entity is introduced in order to provide low latency and no packet loss. This entity is also responsible to select the next access point for mobile router when the latter detects its movement. Using this hybrid approach, mobile router can predict a handover and has the best knowledge regarding its current location and state to initiate the handover. In addition, thanks to this entity, mobile router can, based on its current state, perform handover with different strategies, so as to improve handover performance. Despite this new mechanism, no additional function is required to mobile router in our proposition. We have carried out a comparison study of handover performance with NEMO basic protocol, and showed that our proposed scheme provides near-optimal performance in both intradomain and interdomain handover. Furthermore, certain parameters, the distance between two related MRs, the distance of overlapping area and the mobile network speed, which affect the performance of our proposition have also been studied. The results show that seamless handover can be achieved if these parameters are rightly configured.

The paper addresses the problem of designing efficient scheduling policies for the transmission of control messages by hierarchical network protocols. Such protocols encounter a tradeoff between the desire to forward a control message across the tree as soon, as it is received, and the desire to reduce control traffic. Scheduling problems that arise in this context are defined and discussed. The paper mainly concentrates on minimizing the average extra delay encountered by the control messages under an upper bound on the number of outgoing messages a node can send during a fixed period of time. A polynomial-time algorithm is presented for the off-line version of the problem, and then several efficient on-line heuristics are presented and compared.
