RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems give an opportunity to have a wide access control integrated with the monitoring of people and goods flow. System's scalability is one of the most important features in such systems as they enable large scale deployments. The concept of a proposed reader's architecture employs new RFID transceivers and microcontrollers, and security algorithms which give very high functionality at a low price. A special treatment of system's security layer allows us to achieve one of the most important features of the scalable RFID system - a very high security level at each system level, which is uncommon in commercially available systems. In communication process data sent at each layer is encrypted by AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and 3DES (Triple Data Encryption Standard) algorithms. Moreover, thanks to innovative communication protocols the system is almost ideally scalable, so the usage of those devices gives an opportunity to built small, medium and large installations using the same RFID reader.

In this paper, a simplified joint call and packet level teletraffic analysis method for performance evaluation of call admission control (CAC) strategies for voice over ip (Voip) traffic over wireless access networks is proposed. The admission criterion of new sessions of the considered CAC strategies is based on either the total number of sessions or the number of active sessions. Arrivals and completions of Voip sessions, on/off activity detection, and periodic and constant length packet generation of individual Voip active sessions are modeled. Packet buffering, adaptive modulation coding, and proportional fair sharing scheduling are also considered. Our proposed analysis is based on the quantized queue and cross-level linked decomposition mechanisms that we introduce in this paper to drastically simplify the mathematical and computational procedures with no major impact on the accuracy of the results. The developed analysis allows evaluating the performance of the CAC strategies in terms of the most relevant QoS metrics of Voip traffic at both call and packet level and, at the same time, mathematical and computational complexity are reduced with no major impact on the accuracy of numerical results.

In various network monitoring tasks, the detection of superspreaders has become increasingly crucial. However, latest superspreader detection algorithms and data structures assume the target switch with a single pipeline, while state-of-the-art programmable switches actually comprise multiple independent pipelines. In current method for deploying super-spreader detection applications on multi-pipeline switches, a separate measurement data structure instance is employed for each pipeline. However, under multi-path routing, this simplistic approach leads to lower detection accuracy due to hash collisions. To address this issue, in this paper, we present PipelineAlloc, a HyperLogLog-based superspreader detection system designed for multi-pipeline switches. In order to reduce hash collisions in measurement data structures, PipelineAlloc assigns an egress pipeline as the monitor pipeline for each source ip address. PipelineAlloc introduces novel measurement data structures in the ingress pipelines for temporarily storing statistics of the source and destination ip addresses of packets, and uses packets to carry these measurement data to egress pipelines, which serve as the monitor pipelines. The HyperLogLog-based measurement data structures in egress pipelines are updated using data carried by packets. Experiments driven by real-world traffic traces show that PipelineAlloc outperforms existing solutions in terms of detection accuracy.

The use of discrete-event simulators in the design and development of large scale distributed systems is appealing due to their efficiency and scalability. Their core abstractions of process and event map neatly to the components and interactions of modern-day distributed systems and allow designing realistic simulation scenarios. MONARC 2, a multithreaded, process oriented simulation framework designed for modelling large scale distributed systems, allows the realistic simulation of a wide-range of distributed system technologies, with respect to their specific components and characteristics. In this paper we present the design characteristics of the simulation model proposed in MONARC 2. We demonstrate that this model includes the necessary components to describe various actual distributed system technologies, and provides the mechanisms to describe concurrent network traffic, evaluate different strategies in data replication, and analyze job scheduling procedures.

Among the problems related to the Differentiated Service (DiffServ) architecture two are providing minimum bandwidth guarantee to a specific service class and the fair bandwidth sharing for the streams of the class aggregate. One elegant alternative to end-to-end service differentiation can be based on end point intelligence to control losses and delays when transferring data of individual Transmission control Protocol streams. This paper describes a simple method to differentiate services based on congestion control parameter configuration of a TCP’s server, a priority marker, and that is still compatible to the mainly TCP implementations. A concept proof and results from simulation models are presented. We found out that our proposed approach also improves bandwidth share fairness among TCP’ individual flows of an aggregate.

A distinguishing characteristic of wireless sensor networks is the opportunity to exploit characteristics of the application at lower layers. This paper reports on the results of a simulation comparison of proposed data dissemination protocols using the J-Sim simulator for the WSN protocols: Forwarding diffusion data dissemination (FDDDP), decentralized data dissemination (DDDP), credit broadcast data dissemination (CBDDP), Energy aware & geographical data dissemination (EAGDDP). Our performance provides useful insights for the network designer such as which protocols (and design choices) scale control traffic well, improve data delivery or reduce overall energy consumption, improves routing overhead and maximizes the bandwidth utilization. The static pre configuration of the cell size in DDDP, is one of the reasons why DDDP exhibits larger routing overhead than FDDDP by 74.2% on average. Although CBDDP produces approximately 94.6% smaller overhead than DDDP and 90.7% smaller than FDDDP, because of statically configured amount credit CBDDP delivers on average 7.5 times more of the redundant data packets than DDDP and *** improves the delivery by 80% on average and makes a balance of energy consumption . We suggest that making these protocols truly self-learning can significantly improve their performance.

Needs for internetworking private networks over a commonly shared public network have expanded the usage of Virtual Private networks (VPNs). Customers, through the use of a RFC 4364 VPN, use service provider (SP) backbones to establish private connectivity between geographically disparate networks. As a direct result of SPs migrating towards an Internet Protocol (ip) over a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) infrastructure, as observed within the Defense Information Switched Network (DISN) of the Global Information Grid (GIG), SPs have also begun to transition from providing traditional circuit-switched leased permanent virtual circuits through a layer two (L2) protocol (e.g., Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or Frame Relay (FR) to providing layer three (L3) VPN services. Currently, requirements for securing the GIG control plane traffic are undecided. A potential solution for protecting the GIG control plane includes instantiating Internet Protocol security (ipsec) Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) Transport Mode across all GIG routers on a router-to-router basis. Although the use of ipsec has been proven to provide effective data confidentiality, data integrity, and authentication to devices operating on the data plane, both routing vendors and SP operators have shared concerns regarding network performance degradation associated with the use of ipsec on the control plane. This paper will investigate the performance implications of applying ipsec ESP Transport Mode to routers participating in 4364 VPNs, given a typical GIG scenario. Testing has been recently completed to determine the impacts of using ipsec protection on 4364 VPNs, specifically in a simulated GIG operating environment.

In military networks, precedence and preemption (P&P) and quality of service (QoS) are both required. QoS refers to meeting the performance requirements of an application (packet delay, packet loss, packet delay variation, service availability, connection set up time, connection acceptance ratio, etc.) while P&P refers to meeting the QoS requirements of the highest importance applications under congestion conditions, in which there are not enough network resources to satisfy the QoS requirements of all applications. In particular, preemption refers to taking away network resources from a lower precedence application in order to give the resources to a higher precedence application. Per Hob Behaviors (PHBs) are used by network nodes to implement QoS. A service level agreement (SLA) is a QoS contract that is used to assure that the QoS requirements of admitted applications are met by the network transport for defined traffic profiles. SLAs and P&P are often perceived to have an adversarial relationship. This paper proposes a way to resolve this conflict by making QoS PHBs precedence-aware, while remaining agnostic of the specific PHB mechanism

In order to characterize the dynamics of self-similar behavior in daily Internet traffic, we analyze the time series of traffic volume for a 24-hour period in a wide-area Internet, by using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) - a well-known method of characterizing nonstationarity in a time series. We show that the estimated scaling exponent (which is directly related to the Hurst parameter) of traffic fluctuations has a dependency on the level of human activity for a time scale greater than 30s. Thus, the temporal correlation for traffic fluctuations is close to 1/f-noise during the day, and becomes weaker at night. This result suggests that Internet traffic cannot be modeled using the unique value of the Hurst parameter.

As email integrates the advantages of telephone communications and postal mail, it has become an indispensable form of modern communication. Most of current network applications require an email to create account, making people's social characteristics and network identity attributes connected. It is important to monitor the user's behavior with different identities for security monitoring. We focus on extracting the user's email identity extraction and association in this paper. Firstly, email delivery mechanism for different email client is introduced with the communications protocols and related standards. Then, SMTP session based method and TCP stream assembly based method are proposed to analyze the traffic generated by email clients and web client respectively. All user characteristics from most email clients and web mail sites which has about 60 percent share in market, are extracted successfully. At last, the association between user's multi-email accounts and identity is established on some basic analysis of the active profile of different accounts. The analysis results with the actual traffic trace collect from the CERNET verify the correctness of the proposed method, the identification accuracy of multi-addresses is above 80%, which is important for user's behavior monitoring.
