Progress in several technical areas is being leveraged to advantage in Unattended Ground sensor (UGS) systems. This paper discusses advanced technologies that are appropriate for use in UGS systems. While some technologies provide evolutionary improvements, other technologies result in revolutionary performance advancements for UGS systems. Some specific technologies discussed include wireless cameras and viewers, commercial PDA-based system programmers and monitors, new materials and techniques for packaging improvements, low power cueing sensor radios, advanced long-haul terrestrial and SATCOM radios, and networked communications. Other technologies covered include advanced target detection algorithms, high pixel count cameras for license plate and facial recognition, small cameras that provide large stand-off distances, video transmissions of target activity instead of still images, sensor fusion algorithms, and control center hardware. The impact of each technology on the overall UGS system architecture is discussed, along with the advantages provided to UGS system users. Areas of analysis include required camera parameters as a function of stand-off distance for license plate and facial recognition applications, power consumption for wireless cameras and viewers, sensor fusion communication requirements, and requirements to practically implement video transmission through UGS systems. Examples of devices that have already been fielded using technology from several of these areas are given.

Hybrid Intrinsic Cellular Inference Network (HICIN) is designed for battlespace decision support applications. We developed an automatic method of generating hypotheses for an entity-attribute classifier. The capability and effectiveness of a domain specific ontology was used to generate automatic categories for data classification. Heterogeneous data is clustered using an Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) inference engine on a sample (unclassified) data set. The data set is the Lahman baseball database. The actual data is immaterial to the architecture, however, parallels in the data can be easily drawn (i.e., "Team" maps to organization, "Runs scored/allowed" to Measure of organization performance (positive/negative), "Payroll" to organization resources, etc.). Results show that HICIN classifiers create known inferences from the heterogonous data. These inferences are not explicitly stated in the ontological description of the domain and are strictly data driven. HICIN uses data uncertainty handling to reduce errors in the classification. The uncertainty handling is based on subjective logic. The belief mass allows evidence from multiple sources to be mathematically combined to increase or discount an assertion. In military operations the ability to reduce uncertainty will be vital in the data fusion operation.

The efficient evaluation of fusion algorithms becomes particularly important when different fusion schemes have to be compared with respect to an underlying performance metric. In this paper, we present explicit expressions for the global error probabilities of sensor fusion with side information for distributed detection applications. In the considered distributed detection problem, the sensors compress their observations independently and transmit local decisions to a fusion center that combines the received decisions with respect to available side information and computes the final detection result. In the special case of identical sensors, computationally efficient expressions are obtained by using the multinomial distribution. Numerical results reveal the influence of different qualities of side information on the overall detection performance. © 2010 IEEE.

One of the objectives of Cognitive Robotics is to construct robot systems that can be directed to achieve real-world goals by high-level directions rather than complex, low-level robot programming. Such a system must have the ability to represent, problem-solve and learn about its environment as well as communicate with other agents. In previous work, we have proposed ADAPT, a Cognitive Architecture that views perception as top-down and goal-oriented and part of the problem solving process. Our approach is linked to a SOAR-based problem-solving and learning framework. In this paper, we present an architecture for the perceptive and world modelling components of ADAPT and report on experimental results using this architecture to predict complex object behaviour. A novel aspect of our approach is a 'mirror system' that ensures that the modelled background and foreground objects are synchronized with observations and task-based expectations. This is based on our prior work on comparing real and synthetic images. We show results for a moving object that collides and rebounds from its environment, hence showing that this perception-based problem solving approach has the potential to be used to predict complex object motions.

Many problems in electromagnetic signal analysis exhibit dynamics on a wide range of time scales. Further, these dynamics may involve both continuous source generation processes and discrete source mode dynamics. These rich temporal characteristics can present challenges for standard modeling approaches, particularly in the presence of nonstationary noise and clutter sources. Here we demonstrate a hybrid algorithm designed to capture the dynamic behavior at all relevant time scales while remaining robust to clutter and noise at each time scale. We draw from techniques of adaptive feature extraction, statistical machine learning, and discrete process modeling to construct our hybrid algorithm. We describe our approach and present results applying our hybrid algorithm to a simulated dataset based on an example radio beacon identification problem: civilian air traffic control. This application illustrates the multi-scale complexity of the problems we wish to address. We consider a multi-mode air traffic control radar emitter operating against a cluttered background of competing radars and continuous-wave communications signals (radios, TV broadcasts). Our goals are to find a compact representation of the radio frequency measurements, identify which pulses were emitted by the target source, and determine the mode of the source.

To investigate the on-sensor processing capabilities of FPGAs, this paper presents a bird call recognition system based on linear predictive cepstral coefficients (LPCC) and dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithms for sensor network applications, and compares two different implementations on a Xilinx Spartan-3E FPGA with MicroBlaze soft processor. The experimental results show that compared to the software-only solution, the software / hardware (SW/HW) implementation with hardware coprocessor for DTW yields significant performance improvement by the factor of 13.8 and 33.4 respectively for two example inputs, and achieves about 31.1 times energy efficiency by using only 7.5% more power. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper surveys the research of the information fusion approaches based on game theory. How to resolve the high level fusion problem in the conflict and cooperation environment of multiple sources information is a key problem in the current research of information fusion. Game theory is promising to successfully model conflict and cooperative interactions. So, the relatively new interdisciplinary study of information fusion based on game theory deserves further exploration. Based on the state-of-the-art of the game-theoretic information fusion study, this paper analyzes the two characters (interdisciplinary and high-level) and two study routes (direct route and indirect route via Artificial Intelligence). The most representative processing models, architectures and algorithms in this field are described. The military and several civilian applications and the validity of the gametheoretic information fusion approaches are summarized. Finally, the issues and challenges are summarized and the further research directions are discussed. ©2010 IEEE.

FEATHAR (fusion, Exploitation, algorithms, and Targeting for High-Altitude Reconnaissance) is an ONR funded effort to develop and test new tactical sensor systems specifically designed for small manned and unmanned platforms (payload weight < 50 lbs). This program is being directed and executed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in conjunction with the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL). FEATHAR has developed and integrated EyePod, a combined long-wave infrared (LWIR) and visible to near infrared (VNIR) optical survey & inspection system, with NuSAR, a combined dual band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. These sensors are being tested in conjunction with other ground and airborne sensor systems to demonstrate intelligent real-time cross-sensor cueing and in-air data fusion. Results from test flights of the EyePod and NuSAR sensors will be presented.

In order to reduce false alarm and alarm failure of fire detection system, a research of fire detection method based on multi-sensor data fusion was conducted. In this research, probabilistic neural networks (PNN) data fusion algorithm was employed to detect fire based on texture features from fire scene. Information of temperature and smoke concentration were processed by trend algorithm separately. Results from the above three fire detection algorithms were processed through decision level data fusion to accomplish fire detection and automatic fire alarm. It has been demonstrated that fire detection platform based on this method can detect fire faster and more accurately and discard nuance disturbances from florescent light or alcohol burner, thus providing a brighter future in applications. ©2010 IEEE.

MMSs have been applied widely for acquiring spatial information in applications such as GIS and 3D city models. Nowadays the most common technologies used for MMS positioning and orientation include using GPS as a major positioning sensor and INS as the major orientation sensor. In the classical approach, the limitation of KF and the price of overall multi-sensor systems have limited the popularization of most land-based MMS applications. Although intelligent sensor positioning and orientation schemes have been proposed consisting of MFNN, one of the most famous ANNs, and KF/RTS, in order to enhance the performance of a low cost MEMS INS/GPS integrated system, the automation of the MFNN applied is not as easy as initially expected. Therefore, this study not only addresses the problems of insufficient automation in the conventional methodology that has been applied in MFNN-KF/RTS algorithms for INS/GPS integrated system proposed in previous studies, but also exploits and analyzes the idea of developing alternative intelligent sensor positioning and orientation schemes that integrate various sensors in a more automatic way. The proposed schemes are implemented using SGN to overcome the limitations of conventional techniques based on the KF/RTS algorithms as well as previously developed MFNN-KF/RTS schemes. The SGN(CCN) also has the advantage of a more flexible topology compared to the MFNN for INS/GPS integration. The results presented in this article illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes over both KF/RTS algorithms as well as the MFNN-KF/RTS schemes.
