In the last two decades, research by McQ Inc. and others has led to substantial advances in the performance of unattended ground sensor (UGS) systems. These advancements include: extremely long battery life;small, robust packaging;high performance detection and classification algorithms;multimodal, multispectral sensors;long range communications;air droppable delivery;fully integrated sensor management;multi-sensor situational awareness and data fusion;advanced video detection and optical sensor development;and others. This research has demonstrated that there is a great deal that existing technology can do to solve users' intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) requirements using UGS sensors. However, in spite of these advances, UGS systems have not enjoyed widespread use in either DoD, DHS or with law enforcement agencies (LEA). Although requirements differ from agency to agency and application to application, the primary factor that limits more widespread use of UGS systems is cost. Cost determines how many sensors an agency can buy and how they are used operationally. Only when sensors cost $100 or less will they be considered truly disposable. The focus of this paper is to present the technical considerations and a roadmap for producing truly low cost UGS sensors. Achieving this goal will then create within the DoD, DHS, LEA and other communities' requirements for UGS systems intended for a wide variety of uses that were never seriously considered previously because of cost. The implications are significant and will lead to an explosion in the number of UGS systems made and used on an annual basis.

EyePod is a compact survey and inspection day/night imaging sensor suite for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). EyePod generates georeferenced image products in real-time from visible near infrared (VNIR) and long wave infrared (LWIR) imaging sensors and was developed under the ONR funded FEATHAR (fusion, Exploitation, algorithms, and Targeting for High-Altitude Reconnaissance) program. FEATHAR is being directed and executed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in conjunction with the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) and FEATHAR's goal is to develop and test new tactical sensor systems specifically designed for small manned and unmanned platforms (payload weight < 50 lbs). The EyePod suite consists of two VNIR/LWIR (day/night) gimbaled sensors that, combined, provide broad area survey and focused inspection capabilities. Each EyePod sensor pairs an HD visible EO sensor with a LWIR bolometric imager providing precision geo-referenced and fully digital EO/IR NITFS output imagery. The LWIR sensor is mounted to a patent-pending jitter-reduction stage to correct for the high-frequency motion typically found on small aircraft and unmanned systems. Details will be presented on both the wide-area and inspection EyePod sensor systems, their modes of operation, and results from recent flight demonstrations.

The Spectral and Polarimetric Imagery Collection Experiment (SPICE) is a collaborative effort between the US Army ARDEC and ARL that is focused on the collection of mid-wave and long-wave infrared imagery using hyperspectral, polarimetric, and broadband sensors. The objective of the program is to collect a comprehensive database of the different modalities over the course of 1 to 2 years to capture sensor performance over a wide variety of weather conditions, diurnal, and seasonal changes inherent to Picatinny's northern New Jersey location. Using the Precision Armament Laboratory (PAL) tower at Picatinny Arsenal, the sensors will autonomously collect the desired data around the clock at different ranges where surrogate 2S3 Self-Propelled Howitzer targets are positioned at different viewing perspectives in an open field. The database will allow for: 1) Understanding of signature variability under adverse weather conditions;2) Development of robust algorithms;3) Development of new sensors;4) Evaluation of polarimetric technology;and 5) Evaluation of fusing the different sensor modalities. In this paper, we will present the SPICE data collection objectives, the ongoing effort, the sensors that are currently deployed, and how this work will assist researches on the development and evaluation of sensors, algorithms, and fusion applications.

Reliable tracking of people in video and recovering their identities are of great importance to video analytics applications. For outdoor applications, long range identity sensors such as active RFID can provide good coverage in a large open space, though they only provide coarse location information. We propose a probabilistic approach using noisy inputs from multiple long range identity sensors to globally associate and identify fragmented tracklets generated by video tracking algorithms. We extend a network flow based data association model to recover tracklet identity efficiently. Our approach is evaluated using five minutes of video and active RFID measurements capturing four people wearing RFID tags and a couple of passersby. Simulation is then used to evaluate performance for larger number of targets under different scenarios. © 2010 IEEE.

The objective of maritime surveillance is to reach a level of situation awareness which allows the timely detection and prevention of events threatening maritime security and environment. Due to the heterogeneous mix of platforms and sensor technologies in use today, there is a need for powerful sensor data fusion architectures. This article introduces an object-oriented approach for the fusion of object observations produced by arbitrary heterogeneous sensors. Different scenarios and sensor configurations as well as fusion algorithms can be evaluated by a simulation tool. The benefits of the architecture are highlighted for an illegal immigration scenario.

In this work, we present signal processing approaches to offload complexity from resource constrained sensor nodes to gateway/receiver nodes with better power, memory and CPU budgets. We consider the resources in commercially available cell phone platforms to fill the role of both gateway and receiver nodes in emerging Body sensor Networks, with applications in healthcare. We leverage Compressed Sensing (CS), wherein signals can be reconstructed fairly accurately with high probability from significantly fewer measurements than that suggested by the Nyquist-Shannon sampling rate, albeit with additional complexity at the receiver. This enables receiver nodes with better resource budgets to leverage computationally intensive signal processing algorithms in lieu of on-board processing at the sensor node. We show that aliasing can be avoided at the sensor by trading analog domain complexity for a modest increase in digital domain complexity with synthetic examples and real-time pulse oximeter implementation. We describe ways to leverage receiver resources for mitigating packet losses and sensing artifacts and present experimental results with ECG. Finally, we motivate multi-sensor fusion at the receiver and show that CS paradigm can be used to reduce sensor complexity with sloppy clock management schemes. Copyright 2010 ACM.

With the advances in technology, low cost and low footprint sensors are being used more and more commonly. Especially for military applications wireless sensor networks (WSN) have become an attractive solution as they have great use for avoiding deadly danger in combat. For military applications, classification of a target in a battlefield plays an important role. A wireless sensor node has the ability to sense the raw signal data in battlefield, extract the feature vectors from sensed signal and produce a local classification result using a classifier. Although only one sensor is sufficient to produce a classification result, decision fusion of the local classification results for a number of sensor nodes improves classification accuracy. In our approach, we propose fuzzy decision fusion methods for single target classification in a WSN environment. Our proposed fusion algorithms use fuzzy logic for selecting the most appropriate sensor nodes to be used for classification. Our algorithms provide better classification accuracy over some popular decision fusion algorithms.

Data fusion algorithms have a very wide range of applications in some fields. But, with the growing sensor numbers in multi-sensor target tracking systems, data fusion algorithms using conventional Kalman filter meet problems such as heavy computational burden and poor robustness. Decentralized data fusion algorithms using information filter provide a way of avoiding traditional fusion algorithms' limitations. The work described in this paper aims to develop a decentralized fusion algorithm for multi-sensor target tracking problems. The basic principle of the information filter is introduced. A decentralized data fusion algorithm using information filter is developed. This algorithm is then demonstrated on a multi-senor tracking example.

Many applications require protection of secret or sensitive information, from sensor nodes and embedded applications to large distributed systems. The confidentiality of data can be protected by encryption using symmetric-key ciphers, and the integrity of the data can be ensured by using a cryptographic hash function to calculate a "digital fingerprint." In this paper, we propose reconfigurable FPGA hardware components that enable rapid deployment of cryptographic and other algorithms. The novelty of our hardware components is in their general-purpose design which enables easy mappings of algorithms to allow customizations of data protection for different usage scenarios. Since we utilize only a small part of an FPGA chip, our design can be readily integrated with other processing needs of a mobile device, a sensor node or a System-on-Chip. Important block ciphers like the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) as well as advanced cryptographic hash algorithms like Whirlpool map well onto our general-purpose components. Our solution facilitates easy hardware implementation of customizable encryption and hashing solutions, with area and speed performance comparable to custom FPGA implementations targeted at a specific cipher or hash algorithm. We achieve the best efficiency in Mbps/slice for Whirlpool. Furthermore, the components that we have proposed can be used for many other applications - not just for implementing block ciphers and cryptographic hash functions.
