A new trend in modern Assistive Technologies implies making extensive use of ICT to develop efficient and reliable "Ambient Intelligence" applications dedicated to disabled, elderly or frail people. In this paper we describe two fall detectors, based on bio-inspired algorithms. Such devices can either operate independently or be part of a modular and easily extensible architecture, able to manage different areas of an intelligent environment. In this case, effective data fusion can be achieved, thanks to the complementary nature of the sensors on which the detectors are based. One device is based on vision and can be implemented on a standard FPGA programmable logic. It relies on a simplified version of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The other device under consideration is a wearable accelerometer-based fall detector, which relies on a recent soft-computing paradigm called Hierarchical Temporal Memories (HTMs).

Roll angle and height of the center of gravity are important variables that play a critical role in the calculation of real-time rollover index for a vehicle. The rollover index predicts the real-time propensity for rollover and is used in activation of rollover prevention systems such as differential braking based stability control systems. sensors to measure roll angle are expensive. sensors to estimate the e.g. height of a vehicle do not exist. While the height of the center-of-gravity does not change in real-time, it does change with the number of passengers and loading of the vehicle. This paper focuses on algorithms to estimate roll angle and e.g. height. The algorithms investigated include a sensorfusion algorithm that utilizes a low frequency tilt angle sensor and a gyroscope and a dynamic observer that utilizes only a lateral accelerometer and a gyroscope. The performance of the developed algorithms is investigated using simulations and experimental tests. Experimental data confirm that the developed algorithms perform reliably in a number of different maneuvers that include constant steering, ramp steering, double lane change and sine with dwell steering tests.

We present here an exploration of enabling MIMO spatial multiplexing in a long range LOS point-to-multipoint link such as might be found in a ground-to-air sensor network backhaul or LOS cellular configuration. The paper focuses on the capacity between a single multi-antenna sensor and an airborne multi-antenna transceiver, facilitated by an airborne single-antenna repeater. The multi-point aspect is treated by showing the regions on the ground where any multiple-antenna sensor in those regions could receive high capacity service. This repeater-assisted capacity enhancement (RACE) technique yields a capacity improvement of approximately a factor of two relative to the configuration without the repeater. A large geographical area may be serviced by proper design of system parameters. In the sensor network backhaul configuration, this capacity improvement may enable higher fidelity sensorfusion algorithms than currently possible because of link limitations. In the cellular configuration or any multi-user communication system, this technique may enable data-intensive applications that would otherwise be unavailable because of data rate constraints. To aid the reader in understanding the analysis, a separable metric for capacity is developed, which allows us to consider the impact of the TX/RX configurations separately. This metric may be helpful for other analyses where the RACE concept is found to be useful.

A method is presented that fuses multiple differently exposed images of the same static real-world scene into a single high dynamic range radiance map. Firstly, the response function of the imaging device is recovered, that maps irradiating light at the imaging sensor to gray values, and is usually not linear for 8-bit images. This nonlinearity affects image processing algorithms that do assume a linear model of light. With the response function known this compression can be reversed. For reliable recovery the whole set of images is segmented in a single step, and regions of roughly constant radiance in the scene are labeled. Under- and overexposed parts in one image are segmented without loss of detail throughout the scene. From these segments and a parametrization of digital film the slope of the response curve is estimated, whereby various noise sources of an imaging sensor have been modeled. From its slope the response function is recovered and images are fused. The dynamic range of outdoor environments cannot be captured by a single image. Valuable information gets lost because of under- or overexposure. A radiance map overcomes this problem and makes object recognition or visual self-localisation of robots easier.

Mathematical models of chemo-electrical characteristics of ion-sensitive chemical sensors is essential for development of measuring algorithms to be implemented in firmware of water probes. A crucial point of algorithms like these is a data fusion task, where a matrix of sensors sensitive to a matrix of ions give a matrix of electrical responses. Hence unknown ion activities may be calculated if a parameterized mathematical model of sensor is known. During three years of activity in FP6 WARMER project a diversity of physical and behavioral approaches to sensors modeling has been considered. Since a model selection influence accuracy of measurements, then a plenty of different modeling approaches was discussed and practically verified on the base of laboratory measurements of sensors. Some typical measurements have been used and verification of accuracy of existing has been performed. This contribution contains a discussion of possibilities of modeling of potentiometric sensors. Several physical and behavioral models have been taken into account. It has been shown that in data fusion application essential is small number of parameters and small calculation complexity since accuracy of model has not to be better than accuracy of sensors which is rather low. Hence we must focus on a trade-off between necessity of accurate modeling and availability of accurate sensors.
